I suppose at that stage, they are referred to more by the series title than the episode title, so let's instead look at the meaning of Lost. They are all physically missing, but their souls are also in torment. Are they lost causes or are they on the island because it offers them a chance of redemption?Jack - Sawyer knows that Jack's father loved him and was proud of him for doing the right thing even though it ruined Dad's career.LockeKateSawyerHurleySayidCharlieMichaelWaltSunJinBooneShannonClaireDanielleRoseEthan - too late for redemption
Obvious meaning: The pilot of Oceanic flight 815 is killed by the 'monster,' leaving them without the person who would be the natural leader and who would have the best idea about where they are.
Although none of the flight crew survived past this incident, there are numberous references to airplanes.
Jack - took flying lessons; is now 'piloting' the group Locke - plane on desk in travel agency Kate - robbed a bank for a toy plane that belonged to the man she loved and killed Sawyer Hurley Sayid Charlie Michael Walt - Did his special powers cause the crash? Sun Jin Boone Shannon Claire - prophetic dream included mobile of Oceanic planes
Obvious meaning: Jack tells Kate she doesn't have to tell him about her past. He gives her a fresh start.
John Locke stated "that the mind at birth is like a blank slate, or tabula rasa, waiting to be written on by human experience. All human knowledge is derived from ideas presented to the mind by the world of experience." (Philip Stokes in Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers)
To a degree the crash gives everyone a tabula rasa. They all get to leave their old lives behind but their experiences come with them in the form of skills and memories. Additionally, many characters have had a second chance to wipe the slate, often with the help of the philosopher's namesake.
Jack - still the doctor, still wants to save everyone, his father came to the island with him. No clean slate. Locke - regained the use of his legs Kate - fugitive is now free. Jack keeps asking her about her past - is he taking away the tabula rasa he gave her? Sawyer - has let go of his need to revenge his parents' deaths Hurley - gets away from the numbers when Charlie doesn't believe he won the lottery Sayid - left Nadia's picture at Danielle's, so is open to a new relationship Charlie - has overcome his addiction Michael - had accepted Walt's gift and will now teach Walt about it Walt - has accepted Michael as his father and gained awareness of his own capabilities Sun - freedom from her father and Jin Jin - has chance to start over alone Boone - has let go of his crush on Shannon Shannon - stops caring so much about what Boone thinks and starts a relationship with Sayid Claire - has the opportunity to raise her baby herself
Obvious meaning: Locke planned to go on an aboriginal walkabout in Australia but was denied because of his wheelchair. The plane crash released him from the chair and put him, and everyone else, on a real physical and spiritual journey.
Locke often acts as a guide or advisor on these quests.
Jack chasing his father's 'ghost' Locke Kate Sawyer hunting the boar Hurley Sayid Charlie kicking drugs like a moth emerging from a chrysalis Michael realizing Walt's potential by rescuing him from the polar bear Walt Sun Jin Boone cleansing himself of Shannon Shannon Claire
Obvious reference: Alice in Wonderland chasing the rabbit down the hole into madness, as Jack chases an apparition of his father around the island as he struggles with his leadership position. (mrsbuns)

Just as Alice found herself in Wonderland, all of them have arrived in a magical place where strange things happen. It's hard to tell what's real and what isn't.
The Ocean - The tide rose to take away the wreckage on the beach like it was reclaiming its property. Is the cable Sayid found connected to an underground power source? Locke keeps looking out to sea as though he is waiting for something to emerge. In her diary, Claire has drawn a line that looks like waves with circles above, below and on the line - what does this symbolize?
The Monster - It kills but doesn't eat the pilot. Locke thought it beautiful. Danielle doesn't believe in monsters.
The Black Rock - Magnetic. Danielle's party was infected by or near it. Is it what caused Sayid's compas to be off?
The Hatch - Locke and Boone believe that if they stare at it long enough, it will reveal its secrets to them.
The Whispers - Mysterious voices that people hear when they are alone in the forest. A combination of statements about being afraid and needing help as well as voices from the listener's past. Are they hiding in an underground network? Is it safer to live underground than above? Are they afraid to appear because they are disfigured? Does Vincent visit them when he goes missing?
The bodies in the cave - who was this couple who were ritualistically buried with a black and a white rock?
Obvious meaning: Sun rises up against the restrictions placed upon her by her father and husband.
The title is a literary reference to the song which MEandthesea will post below. (Thanks, ME)
It sounds like the girl knows that the house will be her downfall and tries to escape but gets pulled back to it anyway. Sounds like a metaphor for Sun's relationship with her father. The others are also aware of their vices, but can't escape them either.
Jack's father was an alcoholic and on several occasions we've seen Jack looking for a drink, or justifying his need for it. Sawyer hated the con man for ruining his family, but was forced into the same crimes. Kate didn't want to rob the bank, but had to (for a reason we have yet to find out). Charlie tried to stop Liam's drug use, but became addicted himself. Claire didn't mean to get pregnant, but she couldn't give up the baby, either. Shannon didn't want to be useless, she just didn't know she knew how to do anything. Michael didn't want to be a bad father, he just chose the wrong woman to have a child with. Walt didn't want to kill the bird, he just didn't understand his powers yet. Sayid didn't want to almost kill Sawyer, but his training kicked in. Boone knew it was wrong to love Shannon, but couldn't let go of her. Jin didn't want to be controling and mean to Sun, but the pressure from her father was more than he could bear.
Obvious meaning: Charlie coming out of his cocoon. The struggle against his addiction makes him stronger.
Everyone has undergone a transformation on the island. In their previous lives, their friends underestimated them and in some cases they were even unaware of their own potential.
Locke - ridiculed by co-workers, he has the best survivalist skills Jack - The others have made him the leader but he doesn't feel up to the task. Wishes he could save them all, but realistically has a very high patient survival rate. Kate - is able to track anything Sawyer - proved that he does have what it takes to kill, but now has better judgement about when to use a gun Michael - unsuccessful artist - provided showers, trying to build a raft Charlie - one hit wonder, junkie - hero to Claire Boone - worked for mommy - hunter, provider Shannon - completely useless - translator Hurley - ? - built golf course, officiated at Scott's funeral, took census Claire - dead end job, accidentally got pregnant - don't know yet Sun - dutiful daughter, wife - healer, gardener Jin - hit man ? - fisherman Walt - killer of bird - huge potential as a hunter and just about anything else he tries Sayid - soldier who didn't have the heart to kill - trying to solve the mysteries of the island
Obvious meaning: Sawyer is a confidence man and so was the person responsible for his parents' deaths.
Through the flashbacks, we have learned that they have each used someone to get what they wanted and they have been used.
Jack - involved in his dad's scam to cover up the botched surgery Locke - Dad conned him into giving up a kidney Kate - conned her 'gang' into helping her rob the bank. She didn't tell them her real name or what she was really after. Sawyer - was the classic con man, deceiving people into giving him their money. He also holds many secrets 'in confidence.' Was conned into killing a man. Hurley ? Sayid - pretended Nadia shot the other guard and himself to enable her escape. He also fixed Danielle's music box to get a tool to pick the lock on his chains and escape. Charlie - gained Lucy's trust to steal from her father. Was scammed by brother in the band business. Michael - lied to Walt about Brian giving him up to protect the boys feelings. He also lied to Walt to steal Vincent

from Brian. He was conned into giving up Walt. Walt - probably cons Vincent into doing all sorts of things. Let his Dad think that Jin and then the Others burned the raft. Sun - used Jin to get her away from her father and into a position to escape. Lied about knowing English, possibly to overhear conversations. Jin - conned into becoming a hit man. Scammed Sun into thinking he didn't have a father Boone - conned by Shannon to get money. Stole water. Shannon used 'boyfriends' to get money from Boone. Used Charlie to get a fish. Believes Boone and Step-Martha stole her money. Claire - conned into getting on the plane.
Obvious reference: Sayid tortured Nadia in solitary confinement when he was in the Republican Guard. Now Danielle imprisons and tortures Sayid.
They are all rather lonely figures in their flashbacks. They all appear to be somewhat withdrawn and haven't left anyone they are close to who is looking for them or mourning them.
Jack was in a self-imposed exile until he was sent to Australia. Locke's closest relationship was with someone he paid to talk to on the phone. Kate has been in love, but he might be the man she killed. Sawyer moves around a lot, doesn't use his real name Hurley ? Sayid hasn't seen Nadia for 7 years, doesn't know whether she's still alive. Has hinted that his family might have been killed. Charlie's brother doesn't want to revive the band Michael has Walt with him Walt has been given away by Brian Sun's father might be looking for her, but she doesn't want to be found. Didn't trust Jin, Jin kept many secrets from Sun. Boone's mom is too busy to notice they're gone Shannon's dad is dead Claire was disowned by her mother and abandoned by her boyfriend
Danielle has been alone on the island for 16 years. Rose believes her husband will join her. Ethan may have been alone since his own arrival on the island.
Obvious meaning: The psychic warned Claire that she must raise her baby or the outcome won't be good.
If you remember what we've heard throughout the series, a LOT of these characters have been orphaned in some way.
Jack's father just died, but is still with him on the island. Kate killed the man she loved. Was this her father? Don't know about mom. Saywer's parents died when he was young. He must have been raised by another, possibly his grandparents. Locke had a foster mother, who died. Shannon's father (Boone's stepfather) died. What about her mom, his dad? Sayid said the military would kill his family if he deserted. Did they? Walt was taken from his father, his mother died and stepfather gave him up. Hurley's father hasn't been mentioned, but he was close to his grandfather. Jin seems to have been adopted by Sun's father. Sun has a father but we don't know about her mother. Claire's baby's father has abandoned him already. Michael hasn't mentioned parents. Charlie went to the Father at the church for advice rather than his own parents. Claire's mother threatened to disown her if she had the baby and her father hasn't been mentioned.
Is finding surrogate parents what they need for redemption? Are Locke and Rose emerging as parents? Do the others share her baby's doom if they don't create a family among themselves?
A's analysis of Claire's prophetic dream:
1-Claire is awakened by a child crying.
Claire is drawing close to the birth. The child is coming.
2-She enters the jungle to find the crying child.
Claire has found herself at the time of delivery on the island, and she is about to be seperated from her child. She begins the quest.
3-She finds Locke sitting at a Tarot table, he has one eye white, and one eye black.
Locke and the island are symbiotic. Can't have one without the other. They are a single entity. This is the first confirmation that we have that Locke perceives the island within himself, and himself within the island. They co-exist. This is the secret of the monster he veiwed. The monster exists within and of the island. It can't exist without the island, and Locke feels that is true of himself as well.
Locke warns that the balance of the island lies in the child, and in it's connection to Claire. They must be together if the island is to remain in balance (white eye, black eye). This is the voice of the Call to Adventure. It also tells you whether or not Claire will be the one who dies.
Episode 11: All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues -- Jack
Obvious reference: Jack has unresolved issues with his father.
But who doesn't? And some of those issues might be about being fathers (or mothers) themselves.
Jack destroyed his father's career by testifying that Dad had killed a pregnant woman in surgery. Needs to hear that Dad loved him and was proud of him for what he did, a message which currently rests in Sawyer's hoard. Was going to cover for Dad until he heard the patient was "pregnant."
Locke gives fatherly advice to all the castaways. Dad was "not cool."
Kate was taught to track by her father. Was he the man she loved and killed? Did she have a son who owned the toy plane?
Sawyer hid under his bed during his parents' murder-suicide. Took the name of the man he blamed (gave up his father's name) and hunted him until he realized that it was his father's weakness that really killed them.
Hurley's father hasn't been mentioned. His Grandfather dies from the curse of the numbers. Sayid ? Charlie has a priest for a surrogate father, yet committed a multitude of sins.
Michael named his son for his father. A family trait is being able to manipulate the physical world with their minds, which may grow stronger with each generation. Walt was taken from his father by his mother and not allowed any contact.
Sun's father is extremely controlling Jin was forced into working for Sun's father. Said his father was dead because he was ashamed he was a fisherman. Discusssion about Claire's baby raised suspicion that they had a baby or pregnancy.
Boone has mother issues because she is the stronger parent. Mom is a perfectionist and Boone constantly fails because he knows he will never live up to her expectations. Shannon's late father left her no money. Perfectionist step-mom has caused Shannon to stop trying to do anything.
Claire may have been abandoned by her father. Her baby's father has also abandoned them.
Obvious reference: The Haliburton case that holds something of value to Kate. Jack and Sawyer are curious about what this could be.
'Whatever the case may be' is also a commonly used reference to what is unknown. There are many things we do not yet know the importance of.
Why was Jack so concerned that the dead patient was pregnant? Who were the bodies in the cave? Why was Shannon disinheritted by her father? Who is Shannon's ex-husband? Who is Kate's ex-husband? Who was Ethan? How did he get to the island? What happened to Alex? Why is the toy plane so important to Kate? Where did Susan die? Where has Sayid been for seven years? Does Jin speak English? Is Helen a phone sex worker or a phone psychic? Why does English Lucy have an Australian accent? Who was the man Kate loved and killed? How did Locke become paralyzed? And how did he walk again? Who was driving the car that hit Michael? In the taxi that went by first? Is Rose's husband, and others in the tail section, alive? What had Michael & Susan "been through" before she left him? Why did Michael's nurse mention her four children? What is the significance of 815? Why is the watch so important to Jin? What is Danielle's power source and who is controlling it? Why did Hurley' lottery win make the news in Korea?
Obvious reference: Boone's heart wants Shannon but his mind keeps telling him she's his step-sister.
In the speech that he gave, at the height of the Vietnam War, Johnson was referring to the South Vietnamese when he said that "ultimate victory will depend on the hearts and minds of the people who actually live out there."
Your opinion of that war and that view are individual, so let's concentrate on the use of this phrase.
What Johnson was stating was that a victory can't be made in a situation unless both the heart and the mind are in agreement. Your mind might tell you that something is bad for you, but until your heart accepts it as well, you won't win.
Boone knew that his relationship with Shannon was destructive. He knew that she is not healthy enough to know or

understand love. But he slept with her anyway. And then she said, now we go back to what we were.
His guilt and conflict were blinding him to everything else that could, should, or would have to be done. Boone was frozen between heart and mind.
"Ultimate victory will depend on the hearts and minds of the people who actually live out there." (AdaWhen)
Who else does this apply to and what does it have to do with the Hearts and Minds speech from the vietnam war era? (mrsbuns)
Jack Locke wants Helen, the phone psychic or phone sex lady who sees him only as a customer. Kate Sawyer Hurley Sayid chose Nadia over Omar and his duty. Charlie Michael wants to protect Walt like a baby, even though he's 10 Walt wants to be treated as an adult, but he's 10 Sun Jin Boone has a crush on his step-sister Shannon Shannon Claire
Obvious meaning: Walt's special power, which is to see things in his mind and have them happen in the physical world.
The island is revealing that everyone is special in their own way, that they each have a special skill which is contributing to the group as a whole. They were all looked down upon in their past lives, but now are revealed to be capable.
Special had more to do with something else than with Walt!
Locke - highly observant of everyone and everything. Seems to know what's better for them than they do themselves. Philosopher. Is able to see the truth of the island unhindered by his past experiences. Jack - Must have used some special power to revive Charlie. Seemed super strong when fighting Ethan the second time. Kate - Sawyer - Michael - Channels his ability to create things he sees in his mind into his art. Charlie - Boone - staring at the hatch, waiting for it to open. Shannon - Hurley - Claire - is carrying a very special baby Sun - Jin - Walt - sees thing in his mind and makes them happen - polar bears, burns raft Sayid - Ethan - stronger than the average man Vincent - Can see the things that are in Walt's mind before they happen in the physical world. Claire's baby - causes his mother to have prophetic dreams.
Obvious meaning: Claire escapes from Ethan and returns to the castaways.
Adawhen gave us some hints about what to look for:
The title refers to other things more than to Claire. In fact, Claire was incidental. Watch it again, and see if you can see what the writers were trying to get across to you. Who is having a homecoming here? What is a homecoming? In other words, what is the key element of missing home? Memories, perhaps? Knowledge of what is real and what isn't? The place where you are known, and where you belong? Where we love? Who had a homecoming? Who DIDN'T?
None of these people wanted to be on that plane or reach their destination, so the houses they came from aren't really their homes. Are they finding that their true home is with each other on the island?
Jack - the doctor is useful on the island, but he's not opening up to anyone. He feels like a failure as a doctor, even though he's truly successful. Locke - is on the Walkabout that he is well suited to. Feels at home on the island and is the one who understands it best. Kate - also putting her skills to good use; starting to connect to Jack and Sawyer by sharing her secrets. Happily 'sinking' in the sand of freedom. Has been reunited with the toy plane and the attached memories. Sawyer - Probably moved around to much to literally have a home. He decided he didn't need revenge on the boar, so that part of him is at rest. Had bought a spot on the raft, so does not feel like the island is home. Hurley - had a homecoming when Danielle believed him about the numbers being cursed. Sayid - has a chance to be a soldier again, but is that something he was trying to leave behind him? Beginning a relationship with Shannon. Charlie - In his flashbacks, he wanted to be needed but was actually using everyone to get what he wanted. On the island he feels needed by Claire. Gave in to the primal forces of the island when he killed Ethan.

Michael - has been reunited with his son. Is building a second raft to leave the island. Walt - getting more attention from Michael and Locke than he had from Susan & Brian. Feels more at home on the island than in his former transient life. Sun - seems to have led a very sheltered life, but is now expressing herself. Looked highly content on the beach after separating from Jin. Jin - Kept secrets from Sun but now seems to be connecting, perhaps through a memory of a baby. Boone - trying to contribute, but still failing Shannon - Sayid makes her feel useful, for probably the first time in her life Claire - came back from her kidnapper, is starting to remember Scott - went 'home to God' Ethan - not sure if he went home to God, but he is in his eternal home Vincent - was kidnapped from Brian, wanders off a lot, but keeps coming home to Walt. May have made friends with the Whisperers.
Obvious meaning: Sawyer is an outlaw because he killed Hibbs and the boar is an outlaw because he attacks Sawyer.
We tend to think of outlaws as criminals, but really they are people who take the law into their own hands. They do this because they feel justified in what they are doing.
Something occurred in this episode that hasn't happened before. What was it?
Jack - still the centre of the group. Upheld the law by testifying against his father. Sayid somehow justifies torture and killing yet is appalled by Charlie reading Claire's diary. Charlie feels justified in reading Claire's diary because it yields a clue to finding her. Michael steals Vincent from Brian who stole Walt from Michael. Charlie steals the box, but it wasnt' Lucy's father's box anyway. It was Winston Churchill's. Sawyer feels justified in killing original Sawyer because he killed his parents. He feels guilty only when he realizes he has killed the wrong man. Kate somehow feels the plane is truly hers. Danielle killed Robert in self-defence. Charlie killed Ethan because of whatever he witnessed Ethan doing to Claire. Ethan feels justified in killing Scott because they kept Claire from him. Locke - Hurley - Walt accidentally-on-purpose burned the raft because he father planned to take him from the island on it Sun - Jin bet the Environment minister to save him from being killed by the hitman Boone - 'killed' Shannon to rid himself of the responsibility for her (in his halucination) Shannon - Claire -
Obvious meaning: Due to comnunication difficulties, Jin is wrongly assumed to have burned the raft and killed someone. Sun's revelation that she speaks English proved his innocence. Title refers to the film Lost in Translation.
"I figured the title of Jin's episode was a play on that movie, and that it referred to his inability to communicate with the other survivors. But, . . . there is usually multiple layers of meaning with everything on this show...
What is the movie about? A man, completely miserable in his life, who hates his job and feels like a sell-out, thrust into a foreign environment where he is basically isolated and forced to confront his own inner demons and learn to find joy in life again, through an actual connection with another human being." (mrsbuns and pink)
Jack Locke Kate Sawyer was assumed to be the prisoner, and perhaps stll is as Jack is the only one who knows it's Kate. Hurley Sayid was assumed to be a terrorist by Sawyer and airport security. Charlie Michael was thought to hate being a dad when really he was just afraid Walt Sun Jin was thought to have killed someone and burned the raft, but is innocent. Boone Shannon left out information when she translated Danielle's transmission. Is trying to translate the maps. Claire Danielle - thought to be crazy for hearing voices until Sayid heard them. Rose - thought to be in denial over her husband death, but ??? Ethan - assumed to be on Flight 815, but he was already on the island
Language and Geography
The subject of language and translation has come up throughout the series. Since language is tied to geography, let's include where these characters came from as well. It may give us some insight into how their paths have crossed in the past. Since most only appear to speak English, I won't note that for each one.
Jack - Los Angeles Locke - California Kate - Canada, Fort Lewis, WA, New Mexico - father was in the military, so she may have traveled as a child. Sawyer - Tennessee - Parents don't have Southern accents, but Sawyer certainly does. Hurley - California Sayid - Iraq - Arabic and English with a British accent - Served in the Gulf War, but hasn't mentioned more recent conflicts. Was still in the Republican Guard seven years ago. Charlie - Manchester (or near that part of England) - Brother lives in Australia. May have toured internationally with his band. Was trying to sign recording contract in L.A. Michael - ?, New York - Traveled to Australia to retrieve son Walt - New York, Amsterdam, Australia - lived in several countries because his parents worked for an international

law firm Sun - Korea - speaks Korean and English Jin - Korea - speaks Korean Boone - ? Shannon - learned French living with a man and his son in St. Tropez Claire - Australia - thought she was on her way to L.A. to give up her baby for adoption. Danielle - France - speaks French, English and several other European languages. Used the English pronunciation of Robert when referring to her love. Doesn't know where her child, Alex, is. Ethan - Ontario (Canada or California?) Lucy - English girl with an Australian accent
Presumed meaning: Reference to the number 815, which has appeared in all episodes but one. That episode is significant for not having the number in it.
1. (Lost) Pilot -- 2. Pilot, Part2 -- 3. Tabula Rasa -- 4. Walkabout -- 5. White Rabbit -- 6. Also: 15 ATE on Charlie's fingers (thanks Armymom) - from a photo, but from which episode?
The title is a pun on Deus ex Machina, (God from the machine) a literary and theatrical device where the hand of God reaches in and puts the plot back on track. It is used when the story has become impossible to resolve without an unbelievable twist.
An example from Watership Down: A rabbit is about to be killed by a cat until a little girl comes along to rescue the rabbit and set it free along the path to its new home.
The plane crashed in a way that is inconsistent with anyone surviving. Nonetheless, we accept that this happened because without it we don't have a show. Equally dramatic things have happened to the individuals involved.
Jack Locke is no longer paralyzed. Kate Sawyer Hurley Sayid Charlie was revived by Jack. Michael was hit by the car. Walt's mother died suddenly Sun Jin Boone Shannon Claire was given a plane ticket by a psychic
Presumed meaning: A reference to the medical directive to 'first, do no harm,' meaning that when attempting to help someone, you shouldn't inadvertantly make them worse.
We've seen a few instances already.
Jack Locke Kate Sawyer tried to kill the marshall, but only gave him more pain. Hurley Sayid Charlie Michael Walt Sun Jin Boone tries to resuscitate Rose but has her head in the wrong position. He also tried to save the drowning Joanne but Jack had to save him while letting her drown. Shannon Claire
Episode 21: The Greater Good (a.k.a. Sides) -- Sayid
Presumed meaning: Something, or someone, is sacrificed for the benefit of everyone else.
Jack's father said that he sacrificed his relationship with Jack for the greater good of the patients he could save.
Jack might be sacrificing his sanity to lead them all. Locke Kate Sawyer has sacrificed pieces of his stash to gain information that might end up helping them all. Hurley Sayid shot himself to save Nadia. Charlie Michael Walt Sun Jin Boone Shannon Claire was willing to give up her baby to a better life.
Presumed meaning: Kate is on the run from the law again.
Are the others running from something in their pasts?
Jack - running away from responsibility... the responsibilities placed upon him by others, as well as (and especially) the unrealistic, larger-than-life burden of responsibility he places upon himself. But again, on Isle de Lost, he has found himself smack dab in the middle of the very thing he was running from - everyone places a huge amount of responsibility on Jack... as healer, decision maker, counselor, savior, leader...
Kate - I still don't feel like I know enough about Kate and her "story" to tell... even after two back stories (both focused on a similar time in her life - robbing the bank, and running from the law) - I think the third chapter in her FB trilogy will be an important piece of the Kate puzzle. We know she can shoot a gun and is capable of wounding someone with it... for a toy plane, but she also intentionally shot to wound, not to kill. she also pulled the farmer from his truck, rather than letting him die - even though it meant her capture. And in the plane, when the marshall was knocked out as the plane started to fall apart - she tried to put his oxygen mask on him. She is not a bad person at heart - and she has heart.
Right now - my feeling (and guess) is that Kate is running from the truth. I don't think Kate even knows what some of the truths are that's she's running from. That's why she's running - she's afraid of what the truth might be - and rather than stopping and facing the truth (which may not be as bad as she thinks), she runs... avoiding it... fearing it. I think that's why she believes she killed the man she loved. She doesn't really know the whole truth - and she doesn't want to know... fearing it's going to be even worse than what she already believes.
Sawyer - I think Sawyer is running from trust. He doesn't trust because the two most important people in his life - the only two people he ever trusted implicitly - betrayed that trust in an enormous way. His mother had an affair, and then his father killed his mother and himself... abandoning him. Sawyer doesn't want to let anyone else betray his trust like that, so he's running from trust. He keeps his walls up, and when he starts to soften and feel and trust... he'll slam the door shut with one of his snide, hurtful remarks... hurting others to protect himself from getting hurt. I don't know if Sawyer even truly trusts himself...
Locke - running from his limitations, or the limitation placed on him by society, ney-sayers, negative energy (from the people around him), isolation (which is ironic, since it seems being on an island like that with strangers would be even more isolating, but it's all a matter of perspective). And of course, the epi title "Born to Run" is ironic with Locke, since before the crash he wasn't able to run at all... and now can run as much as he wants.
Hurley - ultimately I think he's trying to distance himself from the "bad luck" or "curse" that he believes the numbers brought him. It may seem like it's the numbers he's distancing himself from - but he's running from the curse/bad luck... and whatever is causing it. Ever since he won the money, he's believed he's been cursed - he just transferred that belief from beliving the money to be the cause, to believing the numbers were the cause of the curse.
Boone - Running from expectations... his mother's, Shannon's... Do you think he WANTED to work for his mother's bridal company? He's doing what mommy expects of him. Flying around the world to bail Shannon out of another abuse situation (so he thought) - meeting sis's expectations. Sadly, he's now spending every waking moment trying to live up to Locke's expectations too. I know it seems like Locke is trying to "help" Boone "grow", but in many ways, Locke is clearly using Boone... and Boone is so eager to please and be validated, just like he did with mom and step-sis, and probably wanted from absent pop, that he's fallen face first into the very thing he's been running from. Just went from trying to live up to one person's expectations to another's.
By the way, regarding Hurley - I think there is probably something even deeper that he's running from... the real root of his story... which we probably haven't even begun to realize yet. We've only seen one chapter of his backstory... the others will reveal a lot more. Then we'll learn a lot more about what he's running from.
Sayid Charlie - trying to overcome his addiction Michael Walt Sun - her father Jin - Sun's father Shannon Claire
Danielle - moved her home so Sayid wouldn't find her. Afraid of the Others. Can't leave the island until she finds Alex. Rose Ethan
Special thanks to MEandthesea for the longer character analyses.
Day One Can't control hand from shaking-plane crashed! All that life flashing before your eyes stuff- NOT TRUE! Don't know what happened. Remember sucking wind and noise-deafening noise. Head still ringing. Not a believer in God, but I prayed. Amazingly still in one piece- couple of scrapes and bruises. Found this notebook and decided to write- don't know what else to do. Where are we? Just mountains and water- every where...
Night One Getting dark now- never saw so many stars. Campfires scattered along the beach- ours is the biggest. Something smells- burnt bodies? I'm sick to my stomach- can't eat plane meals fat guy is handing out. Where is the coast guard? Why aren't they here yet? Tried my cell phone- no connection. Parents are probably worried sick. Gotta stop writing. So tired.
Day Two Nice man in checkered shirt offered me an orange for breakfast- still can't eat. We're all wondering what the hell that noise was last night. Some off to look for the cockpit- not me. Something scary in there. Pen is running out of ink. TYPICAL LUCK. More later...
Day Two (cont.) Borrowed a pen from poor preggo lady. Huddled under a raft when it started to POUR- still got soaked. Dying in sun now. Walked down to the beach. Saw some good waves. Big fight on the beach when I returned- tempers starting to flare. Finally ate something- sea urchin- SUSHI! Still hungry. Transceiver found, but not working. Some hiking to higher ground- I hate hiking. No survivors in cockpit. The probably think we're dead too...
Night Two Played backgammon with Walt today- good kid. Boredom has set in and I am officially burnt. It always hurts more when the sun goes down.
Day Three There's a doctor on the island. He's with some guy in bad shape- has a piece of metal from the plane sticking out of his side. Went over there to see if doctor had any sun block- no luck. By the look of the shrapnel guy, I guess things could be worse.
Night Three Found my check on bag today!!! All clothes, no toiletries. So, now I have a bathing suit- still no sign of surfboard. Always fantasized about being stranded on an island and it's really not so bad...worse part is the hunger. And of course, looking out at perfect peeling lefts and not having my board. Thinking of family and friends tonight. I miss them...
Day Four No signal out, which means no call for help. They asked for electronics to boost it, so I gave up my cell phone- it's of no use to me any more. We're rationing out food and setting up tarps to collect rain water- should be plenty because it started to pour again today- out of nowhere, just torrential. I set up a make-shift shelter against a tree. It's home...for now.
Night Four The shrapnel guy is driving us all nuts with his screaming- poor guy. Why hasn't someone come to rescue us...I haven't seen one plane pass overhead. It doesn't make any sense.
Day Five Heard a gunshot last night. Who the hell has a gun!? Walt found his dog today- I miss my dog. Took a nap in the shade, white fine sand- feels good except for the twisting pangs of hunger in my stomach. Quit smoking last year, but who the hell cares now- bummed one from this guy named Sawyer. The nicotine satisfied the hunger.

Night Five Dog woke me up and now I can't fall back asleep. Some commotion by the fuselage, but I'm too tired to find out what's going on. Sleeping on the cool sand and the breeze is keeping the bugs away. Now if that dog would stop barking...
Day Six We have been asked to gather firewood. Wild boars were in the fuselage last night and we have to burn the bodies inside. Claire, the pregnant lady who loaned me her pen, is going to hold some sort of memorial. There was another fight today- figures it was Sawyer, only this time he got into it with the fat guy over peanuts- literally! I have a few extra packages but I'm not sharing them. Is that selfish? The guy in the checkered shirt is going hunting for the boar- never had boar meat, but I'm hungry enough to try almost anything. Put on my swim suit and walked down to the beach for a swim- the water is really beautiful here. The fat guy was down there with a friend trying to spear a fish- what a riot that was- first time I laughed since we crashed. I'm back on the beach now, trying to turn an earring into a fishhook. If I can find something to use for line, I'll be in business.
Night SixWe read the names of the dead tonight- one of them was sitting next to me. Surreal- feels like a dream. I can't believe this is happening. And still can't believe rescue hasn't come. The signal fire has been burning for days...
Day Seven Joanna drowned today. She's someone I went diving with in Australia and she ended up on my plane. She even switched seats so we could sit together and talk about the trip. She was traveling the coast, diving the Great Barrier Reef. It just doesn't make sense. She was smarter than that- she knew about the rip tides and how to swim parallel to the beach.
Day Seven, cont. To make matters worse, someone stole all the remaining water. I know there is a way to turn salt water into fresh water I just don't remember how. I asked Sawyer for more smokes, which he hasn't returned with yet. Back to the lovely addiction.
Night Seven They found the guy who stole the water, but it's still not enough. The doctor says he found a new water source inland. I'll go fill some bottles, but I'm staying right here on the beach incase a plane flies over. I met this guy named Charlie tonight- used to be in a band called Driveshaft- I have one of their CDs. He's got a tattoo that says "Living is Easy with Eyes Closed". Obviously a Beatles fan. After this experience, my eyes are wide open?
Day Eight I just realized something: I've got a $6,000 credit card bill. Good luck trying to track me down for those payments! Still, I'd pay double that to get off this island. Things are starting to get dodgy; there was a huge fight today between Michael and the Korean guy. If Sayid and Sawyer hadn't pulled him off, I think he would have drowned Michael. What a psycho- I feel sorry for his wife, she seems so nice. We need to get out of here.
Night Eight There's a big debate about where to set up camp. Hurley told me that he, Charlie, Locke and some of the others are moving to the source of fresh water- Jack says there is shelter there. I don't care if there is a four-star hotel; I'm not going in that jungle! How many times do I have to tell those guys, when the rescue planes fly over I don't want to miss my chance to signal them. I've got my little mirror all ready. Kate isn't going either. I trust her.
Day Nine I don't feel very good. I've been nauseous for two days. I saw Jack today when he was picking up some supplies to take back to the new shelter- he told me to try and stay out of the sun. What does he want me to do, move to Seattle? I was going to move into the infirmary because it has a cover over it, but Sawyer got there first. That guy is really starting to get on my nerves- he won't give me any more cigarettes. Not for free, anyway...Pig.
I think Sayid is up to something. I saw him talking to Kate and Boone and he was holding this long pole with some sort of electronic thing on the end. Then he and Kate took off into the jungle. Strange.
Day Nine, cont. Jack is dead! Charlie just came running on to the beach all covered in dirt. He said there was a cave-in at the new shelter and that Jack was buried alive. Michael and a few others went to see if they could help, but it sounds like it's too late. And where is Kate-does she even know? What the hell are we going to do now? What if someone gets hurt? Oh my God, what is Claire going to do?
Day Ten I went to the caves yesterday to see about Jack- it was pretty crazy. Scott told me before I got there. Michael was able to dig a small tunnel all the way through to where Jack was. Charlie crawled through it to help him, only to have the entire thing cave in again! People were freaking out, especially Kate, and trying to dig them out, but there was no chance- WAY too much dirt and rocks. And then, just when we were about to give up, they both came walking out of the jungle...ALIVE! It was incredible. I was caught by surprise at how relieved I was to see them...I mean, I've only known these people for ten days and when they came walking towards me, I almost cried with relief. It makes me think we all have a real chance at making it through this together. Maybe...
Day Ten, cont. Sawyer got stabbed! I don't know who did it, but I think it was Jack. I saw them getting into it over by the old infirmary tent- if Kate hadn't walked up at the last minute, I think they would have brawled. Too bad, actually, I'd LOVE to see someone beat the hell out of Sawyer, his act is getting really old. I mean, who the hell does he think he is, anyway?
Larry hit on me again today. He actually told me he wanted to "ask me out". Uh, out where, exactly? I mean, what's he gonna do, take me ice skating? Honestly, there is NO WAY I'd go out with him- I was hoping he'd figure it out, but the guy obviously can't take a hint.
Day 13I think I saw a whale this morning. I couldn't sleep again, so I went for a swim- the water was so glassy it looked like you could have run across it for miles if you were only fast enough. I really like the time I get to myself, early in the morning before any of the others are awake- very peaceful and calm. So there I was, floating in the ocean when I heard a sound like a steam vent blowing behind me. I turned around and saw this really huge shape going back under the surface. Scared the hell out of me, actually, but it was so cool!
Day 14 Boone came to the beach earlier to tell us that Jack and Charlie and a few others were all playing golf. I thought he'd been in the sun too long (he seems a little soft to me) but I didn't have anything better to do, so I followed the crowd as he led us into the jungle. Sure enough there they were: Michael, Charlie and Jack in the middle of what Hurley called the "Island Open". I don't know how he did it, but Hurley managed to build a 2-hole golf course! It was incredible, people were actually laughing. I had forgotten what laughter sounded like. Everyone got really into it, even betting on the action- I won an extra helping of boar off Larry when Jack made his putt- what a sucker! People are already lined up to play tomorrow. I never was any good at that game. But I suppose now I've got the time to practice...
Night 16 Hurley's out taking names and info from all of us because someone attacked Claire- and apparently this time is wasn't a nightmare. I don't know what good it's gonna do having a list of our names, but at least maybe we'll all feel safer- ha! It's scary to think, but we really don't know who we're stuck on this island with. Someone could be a pedophile or a drug addict. For all I know, Larry could be a rapist- if his name even really is Larry. Gonna have to be a little more careful?
Day 17 My God, we've been sitting here on this island for over two weeks, sleeping next to people who could be capable of anything! And I'm never going to turn my back on Larry again. People aren't always what they seem, if anyone knows that by now, it's me. I suppose after the crash I just assumed it couldn't possibly get any worse here. I'm sure most of use did. We were wrong?
I wasn't prepared for what happened this morning. I got to the caves to find all hell breaking loose. Before I could ask what was going on, I saw Sayid on the ground- he didn't look good at all, but that was nothing compared to the panic going through the camp about Claire (the pregnant lady) and Charlie- they've been kidnapped! Everybody is pointing the finger at this creepy guy named Ethan, but nobody really knows what the hell is going on. I spent most of the day looking for them with Michael and a few of the others, but we didn't have any luck. I knew there was something wrong with this group and now I have to worry what some sicko is doing to Claire. God, it's like the nightmare is starting all over again! You can't tell me I survived that week in Louisiana to be thrown back into this again. I told myself every single day in the hospital that all I had to do was stay alive. Just survive and make it to the trial. And the rest of my life would be perfect- that's what this trip was supposed to be about!
I'll tell you one thing: I'm not going to be a victim. Not again? No way! From here on out, I'm taking care of myself. And if anyone else tries to pull anything, I'm going to be ready for them.
Day 22 There is something seriously wrong with this island. I was woken up this morning by the sound of waves crashing on the shore- big ones, at least 10 feet. I've spent enough years in the water to know how tides work, and never, ever have I seen the tide come up this far, this quickly. Maybe it has something to do with being close to the equator, but it was as if someone flicked on a switch and turned on the waves. The water line is rising fast- too fast! The shelters we've fashioned were being swept away and everyone was in a panic to rescue as much as possible before it was too late. I had to make sure I saved my dive bag (can you imagine if that washed up somewhere for somebody to open???) and saw that Larry had it in his hand! I got right in his face and told him to give it back right now. He laid some story on about how he was just trying to help make sure I didn't loose anything- does he think I was born yesterday?
Day 22, cont. I never thought it was possible, but the plane wreckage is actually being carried away from the beach! It's as if the sea is taking what it is owed. I didn't think I would miss that horrible hunk of twisted metal, but, losing it makes me feel like we've said good bye to the real world. Maybe forever. We're moving camp further up the beach and out of reach of the waves (at least for now). Everybody seems so comfortable there, but not me. Something bad is going to happen. I can feel it. So I've decided to stop trying to denying it...and start to get ready. Each morning I'm swimming a little farther and in the afternoons I run uphill to the golf course. Getting stronger- every day. And when I feel like quitting, all I have to do is remember the consequences of not being prepared. I'm eating as much as I can, trading anything and everything for a little extra meat. Need the protein. Need to keep pushing...
Day 23 I feel awful today. I need to eat- fruit and small amount of fish I've been getting just isn't enough. What happened to the boar? I only started training a few days ago, but I am already exhausted. Swimming is still easy for me, but my legs burn like fire every time I run up that hill. I have to stop and lay down for a while up at the top because I'm too spent to walk back down again. Yesterday I fell asleep at the top of the hill and when I woke up, it was pitch black. I was just laying there looking at the stars, feeling safe for the first time in a long time when something strange happened. I could have sworn I heard whispering all around me. I didn't have my dive bag with me, so I felt even more vulnerable. But let me tell you, the pain in my legs went away in about one second and I was ready to fight. But there was nobody there. I didn't like that feeling at all and I think I made it back to the beach in about 5 minutes flat! I can't let my guard down like that. Ever. Not here...
Day 24 I was out running again today when I came across Locke and Boone in the woods. They were there with Walt, teaching him to throw a knife at a tree. How crazy is that? Who lets a ten year old play with knifes? And I thought those guys were supposed to be hunting? Is this some sort of target practice?
When I returned to the beach, Sawyer told me that Michael decided to build a raft. Didn't he see "Castaway"? Looks may be deceiving, but the waves breaking on the outer reef have been over ten feet since we got here. I've offered to help look for a better place to launch while I'm out running. Maybe on the leeward side. Thing is, we have no idea how big this island is...

Claire is back! - shaken up, but still alive. And to everyone's relief, Jack says the baby seems fine, but what's strange is that she doesn't remember anything that happened to her. No recollection of the last eight days! And she doesn't remember any of us- not even Charlie. The entire camp is starting to realize the danger that surrounds us. We posted guards around our perimeter during the night, but I'm not relying on anyone else to protect me. I'm spending the night next to the biggest fire I can find with my dive bag at my side.
Day 26 Out running on the beach this morning, scoping out potential places to launch the raft, so my attention was on the shoreline, not the tree line. You know that feeling you get when you just know someone is behind you? Well, I had it- bad. But when I turned around, there was nobody there. I picked up the pace and moved closer to the water. A few hundred yards later, I felt it again, so I whipped around, fists ready. And this time, I swear I saw someone in the distance. I moved toward them, but they disappeared into the fog. Weird. Someone was following me- I know it. But that's not the worst of it. As I backed up, scanning the area, I tripped over something and fell hard to the sand...and that's when I saw him- Scott from camp was laying there all twisted and bloody. And it was no accident- every major bone in the guy's body was broken. That could have been me!
We have to get off this island...
Day 27 Charlie shot Ethan! A bunch of people went out into the jungle armed with guns- where are all these guns coming from!?- and, using Claire as bait, brought Ethan to them. Apparently, they all agreed to catch him and keep him alive, but Charlie had other ideas. He fired without asking questions. Some people are angry, even afraid of Charlie, but I'm the last person to pass judgment about something like that. I mean, Ethan kidnapped Claire, strung him up by his neck and left him to die. What did they expect him to do? I bet Ethan killed Scott, too. What a psycho! Maybe now we can all rest a little easier.
The good news is that the boars are back! In fact, one of them attacked Sawyer's tent last night- serves him right. That guy can be such a jerk. I don't know why Kate hangs around him so much. Anyway, now we'll finally get some meat- I'm so sick of fruit and fish...
Day 30 The Korean guy started screaming at his wife again- just for wearing a bikini. What a jerk! It's like a thousand degrees here. Michael saw what was happening and got up in his face- those two really hate each other. With this heat, I suppose we should expect tempers to flare...
Day 31 Someone set the raft on fire last night, creating a pretty huge blaze. All that work, gone to waste! People are pointing the finger at the Korean guy, who took off into the woods. But I saw that little kid Walt playing with matches yesterday.
#1, what the hell is the kid doing with matches? Those are a valuable commodity on this island. And #2, why would anyone burn down our only hope of getting out of this Godforsaken place?
Day 32 The surprises just keep coming! Sawyer found the Korean guy out in the woods and brought him back to camp to face the music. It took about three seconds for Michael to jump him and I think he would've kicked the crap out of him this time if his wife hadn't spoke up and screamed for him to stop- IN ENGLISH! Why on earth didn't she speak up before!? I wonder if she heard me talking trash about her husband? I wonder if she even cares? At least now I know his name is Jin!
Day 33 Went swimming this morning- always makes me really hungry. Still no meat. What happened to the boar that attacked Sawyer's tent the other night? I really don't know what the heck Locke and Boone are doing out there all day, but I think I'm going to follow them tomorrow and find out for myself...

02/14 - Charlie is not the one who will die. But I can tell you that this person is well-loved, well-featured and well, doomed. It is one of the fourteen series regulars -- one of the BIGGEST characters -- and the episode is guaranteed to make you bawl your ever-lovin' eyes out. It's a boy who dies. Basically, something catastrophic happens, and because someone LIES about what happened, ultimately, they are unable to be saved. [We will see Claire pop her baby in an] episode that will be all about the circle of life. [We will also find out who Ethan was.]
03/01 - When the BIG castmember dies off, Claire's baby will be born .... And Jack will NOT be the one to deliver it. 02/08 - This will be a Sayid-centered episode. Source: Lost-TV.com
03/28 - Sayid's episode will involve the CIA and a suicide bomber. Source: Kristin on E!Online
03/28 - What I meant when I said someone was getting OUTED was basically, a lot of the information that only a few people know will be known by ALL before the season ends. Stuff about the island, and stuff about what happened before they were on the island. It all comes out when Sawyer is accused of something he didn't do. The one who'll die is not Jack, nor Hurley, nor the dog. The person that is getting poisoned has hair. Source: Kristin on E!Online
03/20 - Matthew Fox confirmed that Jack does not die. He has says the death will lead to a divide with the island survivers. Source: Advocate Magazine (Thanks Pvargo8148 for the tip.)
03/18 - "No. I'm not dying, but somebody is, and we've already shot that. It was really difficult, obviously, with Jack being the doctor and the moral compass on the show, and it triggers a really strong division amongst the group. It was also really difficult personally for the cast and everybody involved." Matthew Fox interview from Advocate Magazine
03/15 - Sayid will set out to kill one of the main characters. Someone who wronged him in the past. JJ confirmed that a cast member will be killed off. Also, I'm hearing that we will soon find out who knocked Sayid over the head back in the days of those transceiver shenanigans. Source: Kristin on E!Online
01/29 - There will definitely be death before the end of the year, and it won't be a dream," JJ Abrams says of Lost. "And it's not going to be a new character that comes on and all of a sudden dies in that episode.

on the series' sometimes dense mythology as well as act as a refresher course for regular fans. The "Lost" special, set to air on Wednesday, April 27 at 8:00/7:00c (the show's regular time period), will focus on the characters of Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), Locke (Terry O'Quinn), Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) and retell their respective backstories in a linear fashion. It's unclear however how the clips will be introduced and if the hour will include any "behind-the-scenes"-type footage. Source: TheFutonCritic
The Lost hour, set to air April 27 in the show's normal Wednesday 8pm timeslot, will be of particular interest to current fans of the show. That's because the special will take the bits and pieces of information the show has doled out about six main characters over the last six months -- and retell their stories in a linear fashion. "You get to see how these characters are all interwoven and just how deep this show is," Benson said. The special -- from Metropolitan/ Hodder Group -- will focus on the characters of Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Charlie and Sayid. "What we did was break it down to a core of characters that seem to cross back and forth between everyone's lives," Taylor said, adding that there'll also be a segment on the island itself. Taylor credits Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof for the idea of telling the stories in a linear fashion. -- TV Tome

04/?? At this point, Marty is only a fact, but they haven't used all of that FB yet, and the plan right now is to show you more of it in two parts coming up.
The rest of it, it looks like you guys are picking everything up! Great job! What's wrong with Jack? A couple of things, one of which --- really, maybe both of which, contributed to Boone's death. Now, me? I believe in taking responsibility. Someone tells me to climb in a plane held up by vines while teetering on a cliff by it's tail? I'd be asking some questions and saying "I'll wait here, John, while you go". Sort of like George did whenver she would volunteer to hold the flighlight for Nancy Drew. Position of safety! And when the person who asked me to climb up there starts yelling "Get out!", I'd listen! No one to blame but little old me if I don't.
Jack doesn't see it that way. There should have been more that could be done. Someone failed Boone, and the saddest part is, it's not Locke he's really blaming, it's himself. He knows that there was no chance, and he knows he pushed some things that shouldn't have been pushed. And there are things in play here that he hasn't realized as well.
Long and the short of it? When a 3 ton plane falls you while you are stuck on a god-forsaken sort of deserted island where there are monsters, mad french women, unseen radio towers, Whisperers, disappearing children, and no emergency room, you are not going to live long enough to say goodbye to your trampy sister/lover.
"By now, you have of course realized that 'A = ' in the equation stands for an Ampere, and leads you to Ampere's Law and Relativity. Now try to connect the dots on what Danielle has been spending her 16 years on. Don't get frustrated, it's all leading somewhere! Have fun!"
Things on the island are not always what they seem to be even when they are exactly what they seem to be.
One of the biggest of the season subplots. It's a factor in everything from how Ethan is moving about the island so quickly to what is wrong with people. They have shown it to you time and again, and have given you clues of it in everything from camera shots to the maps. You have even touched on it before, but not brought the whole of it together. What is it? It will play a large part in upcoming stories and arcs. She also nods yes to will it have to do with next seasons storyline.
Mar. 19, 11am By now you have had time to think about the question that I've been pestering you all with for a couple of weeks: "Why is Danielle living in that part of the island?".
There must be better areas of the jungle to live! A nice waterfall, a sunny meadow, a glistening beach where you can watch for passing ships to save you!
So why does Danielle, a woman who clearly hates her isolation, refuse to leave that spot even when others come to the island who are obviously friendly? A place she refers to as "Le Territoire Fonce"? The dark territory?
Why does she try to dissuade Sayid from going back?
Why there?
I know you have probably figured this one out, but let's throw it out there anyway: Find the origin of the phrase "dark territory".
Don't let the bad movie from the 90's or games distract you. The term means something.
Find out what, and you find out why Danielle stays in the ugly part of the island.
By this time, you will be tired of playing the angles of the hatch and time travel, so let's leave it alone. The biggest question that we get asked is what is the overall theme? Is there an overall theme?
The answer to this is yes, and every episode is giving you a least on reference piece of the puzzle. So how do you get to the big picture? Why these people? Why that island?
From the very beginning, they have actually been sticking the answer in your face, but being the master puppeteers that they are, we've been watching the right hand while they are turning the keys with the left.
Take some time here and get to know the game of Backgammon. Look into it's history, it's philosophy, it's rules and outcomes. You'll recognize a few things, I think (wink).
And as always, remember to have fun, because as you will soon see, the producers are!"
Mar 19, 2005 09:43 PM
"If you made it through the history of Backgammon, then you understand why the game is being used on the show.
The origins of the game of Backgammon, much like it?s initial intents and rules, are lost to time and shrouded in mystery. It is believed to have been developed in India, or at least the variation known as Parcheesi was which allows four to play. Arabs credit Iran with its invention in their own histories and mythologies.
It is said that a great Iranian king named Nardashir summoned his wise men and ordered them to invent a game which, like life itself, depended on an uncertain balance of skill and chance. It should also sum up human existence in a world of finite time, and reflect the roll of luck and destiny. The result was Backgammon, known in the Arab world as Takhteh Nard or simply nard, supposedly after the legendary king.

In fact, no one knows for sure where the game originated. In early 2004, a carved ivory piece was located in an excavation in southern Egypt which may put the creation of the game there, and at a far earlier date than was ever considered before --- 10,000 years ago. What is known is that the game is closely tied to early divination, is based on constellations, and is tied to the ever present star system that we call Orion.
In Backgammon 30 stones are divided, 15 to a side, which represent the days of the month. They are black and white, and you will commonly find that they are described as illustrating day and night.
In fact, this description is wrong. In the Arab world, where the known history of the board has remained unadulterated for centuries, the black and white colors represent the 15 dark nights of a waxing moon, and the 15 white nights of a waning moon. Lunar conditions that again tie back to Orion.
The board is divided into four sections or "tables," that represent the four seasons. There are 24 positions or "points" to be followed by the stones on their route which stand for the 24 hours of the day; 12 are on each side of the board, the 12 months of the year. Thus each player manipulates a year of time with each play of the game.
The dice used in backgammon are supposed to reflect time itself. While various die are used, whichever way you add up the opposite faces, six and one, five and two, four and three --- you get seven, the seven days of the week. The game of Backgammon is indivisibly tied to time, and time is tied to it.
Current scholarly work reflects the belief and corroborated example that the origin of the game itself lies in ossuary astragali, with the bones of the game having developed from the interpretation of fate. Games that use die are known by their latin name, "tesserae".
Now you have the history, here comes the question: Why do you think LOST decided to use Backgammon in it's storyline?
Hmmmmm.
Let's see if we can a little more to your palette!
They have shown you something time and time again while trying very hard to distract you from what you are seeing. Let's make a helpful list, so you can go back and see for yourself.
1-White Rabbit, Jack, Locke 2-All the Best Cowboys, Jack, Kate, Locke, Boone 3-Hearts and Minds, Boone, Shannon 4-In Translation, Jin, Sawyer 5-Numbers, Hurley, Charlie, Jack, Sayid
Look at Danielle's maps. Somethings wrong. Now, I know how much you hate this, so just consider it a fun game of can you spot Waldo? When you spot it, put it down in your notebook! It will come to the story forefront soon.
And remember, have fun!"

She is giggling wiht delight. She says you are on your way now. She says watch in Looking Glass for the black/white/ theme, certain numbers, the monster, the characters who come and go in the Lost survivors lives, the themes of time in transition, the game of chess or backgammon suggesting that there are unsees forces at work in their lives, what the White Knight, the Gnat and the other characters have to do with Lost. She says to tell you that if Abrams used Wonderland for Alias, he is using Looking Glass for Lost. She says you are all fantastic.
Mar 21, 2005 03:38 PM (p. 40)
Here is what the producers have done. They put a front and an end on it all when they developed the series. You start here and will end there. The clues that they are giving you have been done up during the production this year. They thought that they were going to be doing four years of it, if lucky. Now they are projecting six to eight. The beginning was simply that 6 survivors (later changed to 14) find themselves brought to an island by a plane crash. They reflect on their pasts while sharing a present and developing a future. The island has a history which is linked to their arrival. That was it. The end concept was that something which has been created in the past has been occuring around them. Since then, they are have decided only that time manipulation is involved. The second season will delve in to the lives of those who came before. At any time, the definition of what is happening can be changed, but in the end, it will have to do with time manipulation. Was it a tesseract? Yes, and yet no. It seems that the experiments failed, and it's the failure that needs to be corrected.
Mar 21, 2005 03:57 PM (p.41)
It hasn't changed. You have the pieces that they have wanted you to have, and this thread is by far the furthest along. The answer will be scientific, with a slight leap of it in that the experiments are treated as fact and having worked, or failed, to a certain extent. Keep following the water idea with what you had pieced together on electromagnetic time manipulation.
Mar 21, 2005 06:39 PM (p.42)
Ada woke and asked that I read her your latest postings. She is concerned that you may feel you have hit a wall. She says "You are all right. The clues, the pieces, are just that...little bits of a whole picture. When they direct you to tesseract, what they want you to understand is that time has been manipulated in general. How? They have a vague idea of it, but the finites won't be written until they have to as it limits the story. The only thing that they have decided so far is that is was the government. What is the purpose of "Through the Looking Glass"? To be a core guide to the experience. Alice's journey through a land where things are backward and reflected by a boardgame are just the producers literary alllusions. They are a frame, but nothing more, so skim the story if you don't remember it, but don't worry about it either. The point of it is simply that things are not what they seem on the island. You have the framework of the island story, so leave that one alone. Until they give you more background, you can't move ahead on the water or the power, so give it up for now. Great job, by the way! Until they give you more story, anything I have to add here would be a spoiler, and trust me when I say you really don't want that. So what CAN this thread of great minds work on? Someone is not who they have seemed to be. Someone is going to die. There are secrets on this island that are NOT tied to the final island solution. They are personal secrets, and if you were watching, they have been giving you clues to them for some time. Try to go over the people and the situations from a fresh angle. Watch the individuals and what they are doing. You may be surprised! Most of all, don't get frustrated. This break will be over soon, and then you will have 6 hours and 30 minutes to last you for four months. Take a deep breath, it'll be OK. Yes, four months. But we have a lot of things to work on yet, you'll see. Is that better?"
Mar 22, 2005 11:24 AM (p.43)
Ada sends her best, and gives a big hug to Anni. She says "As a life-long fan of Bierce, Lovecraft, Verne, Wells, Hammett, Asimov, Bradbury, D.i.c.k, Card, and many more, I wouldn't have a problem if we wandered into that area, but the show isn't made that way, and I think the closer they stay to reality, the better the program will be. Every answer may ask you to believe that something that is rumoured or conjectured has at least been attempted and had a modicum of success --- Just enough to be dangerous if you will. One foot in science, and one foot in "what if", but the entire show has been based on that precept, from surviving the crash, to each character being in catharsis, to Walt --- or Michael --- or Claire --- or the whisperers --- or Black Rock. You see the pattern? One foot in reality, one in 'say what?!'. Are we still having fun?"
Mar 24, 2005 10:28 PM (p. 60)
That would make me the monkey's uncle. As always Fedrich, you have a tremendous knowledge base which adds to any discussion. Thanks, I learned a great deal just now. Ada sends greetings and asked that post you a clue.
"There was a significant moment in Numbers where a threat was made. What was thought to be a humourous exchange was not. One threatened, and the other understood that the first had seen something. Will someone die because of it?
Did you see it?"
She says she didn't want you to get bored, and she hopes that you have fun. If there is not information here, I will give you more tomorrow. She woke about an hour ago and was scribbling within minutes. She asked if you had found this piece of the puzzle, and I tried to read the thread to see, but haven't seen it. She asked that I apologise if this is something you have already realised and dealt with. She asks that you have fun.
Dog, you are right. You will not get "THE FINAL ANSWER" until the final show, and that's only if there is warning when it runs it's course. The producers have actually anticipated that, by the way, that the plug may get pulled unexpectedly --- for ratings, cost, or talent concessations --- so they have taken steps to ensure you may get an abrupt, but total final resolution. Shots and footage have been done already and are in the can to be used if that is ever necessary. There have been so many shows with evolving mysteries that were cancelled with short notice, and these producers have learned from the Twin Peaks disasters. It won't be as satisfying as seeing the island unfold over several seasons with the full realizations of these characters, the back history of the island, and the new unfolding adventures, but it would get the job done.
Anyway, the only answer that will wait until the last show is "What is the island?". You will be given clues on a very consistent basis, but you may not realize at the first viewing that you are seeing a clue. You have already noticed that many of the actions and things in the first half of the season are now making a little more sense, right? Well, that is how it's going to be. The whole show is an easter egg! Watch and rewatch. Question everything! Nothing is there without a purpose, so go back. Watch the physical clues, the man made things, the actions of characters, the hints that they have given you about why they are doing certain things on the island, so on. It IS all going some place.
So what will you get solved? The incidental mysteries. Who's Danielle? Who's Ethan? Why did THEY only want Claire? Which one of them is a bridge builder? Who put Adam and Eve in the cave? Exactly how many stations can

you get on the Black Rock Tower? Can you hear me NOW? How could Danielle change the Tower transmission but the Black Rock Others haven't changed it in 15 1/2 years? If Danielle and her crew landed on the rocks after coming to the island to check out the weird number transmission that they heard, why haven't more people come to check out Danielle's distress call? Why is there no harbor on this undeserted deserted island? What is the Black Rock? Now that we know there are more people on this island than Paris has numbers in her sidekick, how come no one's built an actual building? Of course, there was the one that was visible beyond Michael and Jin as Sun and Kate talked this last week, but I mean one that a character on the island built? All these people, all this technology, and no one managed to wave down a plane before this? Or did they (wink)? And the hatch.
The hatch is directly related to the end question, so what you will get is another question when the first part gets answered. Don't get frustrated. This is fun, remember?
And what happens when these characters start to die?
Well, new characters of course! If you haven't realized that there have been several crash landings and sinkings by now, wake up and smell Locke's coffee. And since people are often good instead of bad, many of them will be wandering into camp looking for new friends.
Page 2 of Ada's clues
Influences? From Swiss Family Robinson to Red VS Blue. It's all there, and remember, while they are making you look at the right hand, something else is being done with the left.
Who is Danielle hiding from? Whom is she hunting (and yes, girl is huntig)? Why the Territoire Fonce? Why not move to the area on the map called "Sunny Hills"? Or "Easy Eats"? Why is she there? Where's that cable go? Either end? And why does it enter the ground there? Who was Rousseau? How are things going for any other survivors of Flight 815? And what exactly does Rose do in between appearances?
Why has no one dug a toilet yet? If Michael was a construction guy, and architecht wannabe, why can't he dig a one-seater? But we digress.
Where does Vincent disappear to? Where does Boone disappear to? What is Locke looking for?
What would you need a bridge for? And if you were the only person on the island, why would you be hiding near it? Why do they whisper? Wait. Don't go to fast over that one. Why do they whisper? I know you feel that you have examined that one, but you aren't done. Stop chasing the physical for a minute. Why do they whisper? It's pretty obvious that even at a whisper, the survivors are hearing you, but they don't run away and they don't stop. Why do they whisper? Could Ethan hear them?
What about the travel routes. Anything there? How is Ethan traipsing over the island, and WHAT CLUES WERE YOU GIVEN in ATBCHDI? Yes, you were. Watch again.
The monster. Hmmm. Leaving that one alone. They gave you a lot of clues on that one, and you really don't need me to give you more. Go back and watch it's appearnces. You'll see what I mean.
Walt? Yeah, Walt. I am going to tell you this. Make a list of the Walt-weird scenes. The angle you have on him at the moment is deceiving. Go back with fresh eyes. Is he calling things to him? Is he manipulating the roll of the die? Just go back. Watch the kid, the circumstances, the outcomes. Are you sure you saw what you think you saw? I am planting that suspicion for a reason. I'm not saying that things aren't happening, I'm just saying watch again. And what secret did Locke tell Walt?
If you are very ambitious, use Sayid's maps to ascertain where they are, where Danielle is, if you look closely at the screen caps, you will notice some things that might prove helpful.
And keep talking. Lay it all out. Learn the island better than Locke, because when the show comes back from hiatus, this plane is going down. And honey, you think you've seen it all? You ain't see nothin' yet.
Page 3 of Ada's clues
Exactly, ME. I haven't seen anything that was a curse, but that's just me. Life is a series of ups and downs, and your character is built by how well you take the ride (Hey! HCP! I just used one of those trite truisms I said I hated!).
Danielle in the jungle? She says she lost everything by coming to the island, but you don't have her full story yet. Girl needs to self-realize a bit more. You'll get more on that in the final shows, but did the island do her bad? Or were her own choices what were a disaster?
HCP and I were just discussing the characterizations of Boone and Shannon on another thread, and you know, it's all in perception. Curse? Blessing? Maybe that's what the island is all about!
Dog, five years or more. The last six hours of the season should do a pretty good job of giving you what you've asked for without handing over the whole plotline. I think people are going to enjoy what they see, the answers that they get, and that the show can bring up new questions to keep them coming back for more.
The Monster, Brandon, and Everything: an essay in futility
Janetjune, you are ABSOLUTELY right, you have never heard the name on the show.
When the two hour pilot was originally shot, the scene with the group on the side of the hill listening to the transmission included a line that was eliminated after it aired in the Hawaii screening (mid-August, 2004) and before the airing of the national premiere.
Raggs, assistant writer for the show, and an intern (intern has since changed) were put in charge of writing the diary and submiting script for the game here at the ABC site. They used the original transmission dialog in the script for the game, not knowing that it would be edited out of the show.
Many people heard the original show dialog IN THE GAME, and are now quoting the Brandon bit as something from the show. It was, but it never made it to air.
Was there a Brandon who has something to do with the show? Yes. Were keys mentioned? Yes. Will you hear more on either one by the end of the season? Yes.
There. Have fun.
Weird, HUH?
Page 4 of Ada's clues
Thinker, I can actually give you a bit on that part of the puzzle. They map everything. Producers are giving the conceptual direction based on a single end result ---the Island is solved, and rescue is enabled. The rescue will never occur until the mystery of the Island is resolved. The overall Island mystery is tangible, scientific, and deeply rooted in history. In other words, we have not yet begun to hear how long this has been going on.
When the writers recieve the concept for that show, sometimes it's an event, sometimes a character, they build an episode to layer in several things:
A-The back story of one character B-At least one clue concerning the historical mystery C-At least one clue to the island history D-At least one clue that connects characters E-One clue that connects the characters to the island.
This process is charted. The writing doesn't begin until there is a producer go-ahead on episode concept and where the clues will be layered.
After the episode is written, there is a general sitdown of all writers and producers. They read through and see if they need to put in links to the next story, characters, or plot movement. Then it goes on to get the OK from exec producers, the studio, and the network. After primary shoots, secondary shoots, and extras shots, the rough cut is viewed. If something is too obvious, too oblique, or LEAKED, then they reshoot or redirect with the extra shots.
If you work the process backward, you can chart the clues in an eppy. But since the clues are fragmented, some, at this time, don't mean much. Does that help?
OH! And consider what was learned from Danielle last night. Go over her scene carefully. There's a lot there.
Special had more to do with something else than with Walt!
In reference to Outlaws.
Again, look deeper. Something occurred in this episode that hasn't happened before. What was it?
You are watching the writers right hand (jumping up and down, up and down and yelling "Look here!"). Watch the left hand, which is sneaking some stuff behind your back.
Homecoming. Whose homecoming?
They are changing some of the plot elements, and it looks like the death will turn up after the break, but with a big hint about it in Ep. 18. It will leave you very frustrated for the next 6 weeks, so talk it all out during that time. There is a lot that I haven't seen turn up on the boards yet, and one of them is an indepth look at the meaning of the titles, so I'm very glad that you are doing this.
Is Jack competent? Yes, very. He is doubting himself, but to have only a handful of postcrash survivors die by this point is actually a compliment! He is very good, but he doesn't feel good. All he sees are the deaths. His father, drunk but insightful, could see the flaw in his son: You can't save them all. That's Jack's problem. He feels to be good, he should be able to save them all.
1- The shows are being played in sets. Each set is thematic. This set runs from Homecoming (1.15) to Numbers (1.18). Clues, hints, subthemes, everything has been thought out in a four episode run, so when it finishes, what we look at will make more sense.
2- ABC and Disney threw a royal tantrum about 8 days ago and gave a list of current storylines that they want answered or significantly moved forward by the end of this season. No stalling, no fronting, not teasing. ABC and Disney say that viewers are tired of the tease and they want the real deal answers.
Producers, writer, cast and crews are now running to do as ordered. Storylines that seemed filmed and done are now having scenes reshot, re-edited, and dubbed over. Scripts that were set in stone are now being rewritten. The show is in flux. Everyone is working overtime to meet the demands of two additional hours, and a whole lot of changes.
Long and the short? I will give you more info during the break, but right now? I don't the powers that be have settled on ANYTHING past ep. 19. Ep. 20 had 21 minutes altered this past Thursday and Friday a week after they had finished primary shooting. Unheard of.

We are going to have a FUN break!
Page 5 of Ada's clues
[Jin is going to be playing a pretty big part in what is coming up towards the end of the season. Now that his dream has turned to dross, and he sees what he gave up to become what he never wanted to be, Jin begins his own spiritual recovery. He will become much more active in the other islanders lives. Without Sun alienating him from the others, Jin begins to reform the life his father saw for him --- a life of honor and strength.
1-Iraq was at war with the United States at the time of the flight. Members of the Republican Guard would have been in country as required, and most would have been in custody. What questions does this raise about Sayid? And why would he have been on his way to the United States, which he would have had clearance to enter before purchasing his ticket? Your friend asks that you not think terrorist. What other reason with what you know of him could he have had for going to America.
2-For those seeking the Island mystery, who had followed previous board research on the island --- Becquerel. The final episode will have significant, but not necessarily stated, information on the mystery. Watch the plane.
3-As the camps face new external forces, the differing views on how to deal with those foces begin to tear at the survivors.
4-A death, a birth, and a monster all lead to a new mystery from an unexpected direction. The online diary and certain past tragedies reveal a great deal.
Don't try to figure out the flashbacks until you see them. They only give you what was. Try to figure out how Danielle's numbers, Hurley's numbers, and the hatch could be related. There's the key to go with the Locke! Have fun!
They HAVE been giving you answers, but what are the questions? Think of the show as a tapestry. Everything that you are learning weaves into the eventual final show. Each thread has purpose and a meaning, and when viewed in the right light, answers.
Some of those answers are found in the FB's. Take each FB from an episode, and it will give you a piece of a character. Your job, should you decide to take it, is to figure out what that piece is.
Hint. Just the FB's. Not the current stuff, just the FB's. Put them in sequential order.
The diary is basically irrelevant. It is not a real character or intended to be a real character, but Raggs (the assitant writer who does the thing) is trying to give you clues about what is coming up. The dive bag, something in Louisiana, and the water. THOSE are what you need to look at as clues, not who. When asked the original question, the irrelevant comment was made in answer to "When will we learn who the character who is writing the diary is?". The writer is irrelevant. The observed actions ARE relevant.
Walt MIGHT have powers, we just can't be sure yet. If he DOES have powers, they are orphic, or give him the ability to call animals. The game? Just lucky so far. Locke is an observer. His whole life passed as he observed, yearning to be a participant, but for reasons beyond his control, unable to do what he dreamed. If Walt were showing uncanny abilities, Locke would know it. Locke would be talking to the boy, trying to get him to understand that he needs to control certain aspects of this important gift. So far, that isn't happening. So what IS going on? What draws these animals? Why are they ATTACKING? Polar bears are indeed aggressive, but they coming to something in attack mode.
If its' not Walt, what is it?

Walt?
What about the travel routes. Anything there? How is Ethan traipsing over the island, and WHAT CLUES WERE YOU GIVEN in ATBCHDI? Yes, you were. Watch again.
Run the terms "Magnes" and "Black Rock" together. WINK.
If this isn't censored, you will have a very fun time for the next few days.
I have built a raft, and am sailing to the northside of the island for a few days. Be kind to one another. Help, don't hurt whenever possible. Admire Banshee from afar, she deserves it.
Love the people you love while you can. Tell them you love them often while you can.
Have fun!
What is Locke looking for?
Ada has asked me to clarify for her:
The legend of Magnes, the Sheep herder. The term "Black rock". Be sure to read the superstitions that the Greeks observed on this subject.
Also, "1001 Arabian Nights", with reference to the "magnetic mountain". She states do not be mislead, and you may have to go to the original story and read it first hand.
You will find the the secret of the island, and the reason for the plane's disintegration.
It will also give you hint as to what Locke is watching for.
The story of the magnetic mountain from 1001 Arabian Nights will explain what happened to Danielle's ship.
She says if you have found Magnetite, run that term with "bacteria" and see what you find. Notice especially where is germinates.
Ada asked that I tell you a special hallo and that you should run "magnetite" and "bacteria". She thought you might find the results interesting.
Don't look for a single story to fit all of the time periods and all of the history!
We made that mistake for the first three months, and then we realized that they DON'T match.
I said it before, and I'll say it again (Lily Tomlin, right?): The island has a contiguous history of only about 50 years so far, but NONE of the historical influences match.
There was Adam and Eve, but so far NO correlation to another time period. No sign that anyone, but Jack, ever thought of burying these people or of disturbing the cave. No one was searching for them.
The hatch is your second time period. Dated to the late 50's, but more likely the early 60's (that's all I can say, phwet!).
The third time period, that we are CURRENTLY aware of, is the ship of scientists with whom Danielle was traveling.
The fourth time period is our LOST band of survivors.
They have NO connection that we can find at this time, so you have to assume, when 4 out of 4 happenings appear to have no correlation but where they are, that there is NO correlation to be found but geography.
Maybe that will change, but for right now, be aware, there are 4 separate stories going on here."
BIG OLD CLUE: On what item did we learn the name Rousseau (which by the way, Danielle never confirmed was her name. She said it was her jacket, and after 16 years, yeah, I'd say she could call it that --- But she has never said "My name is Danielle Rousseau")? What is the origin of the jacket?
Adam and Eve are the oldest thing that we have down as well, and again, that's weird. Not the norm for an island in that area. Oversight by the show? Probably, but we keep watching for more.
Hey guys, great research as always. Im going to give you a few thoughts to put you back on course with the island mystery.
Q: Is the government involved? A: Isn't is always?
Q: Were Adam and Eve involved with the island mystery? A: Yep.
Q: Has Danielle been telling us anything useful? A: Hee-yah, yes.
Q: Do the animals have something to do with it? A: Yes.
Q: Does the hatch? A: Yes, but it is not the solution.
Q: Where should we look for answers? A: They have given you several clues about what is happening, why these people, and where this is going. Try looking from another angle. Try looking up. Tell me if you need more.
"Backgammon's the oldest game in the world. Archeologists found sets when they excavated the ancient ruins of Mesopotamia. 5,000 years old. That's older than Jesus Christ."
"But their dice weren't made of plastic. Their dice were made of bones."
"Two players. Two sides. One is light, one is dark. Walt, do you want to know a secret?"
Walkabout
"Not that you would understand, but a Walkabout is a journey of spiritual renewal, where one derives strength from the earth. And becomes inseparable from it. I have vacation days, I'm going, Randy. I've already made a reservation."
"Hey, hey, don't your walk away from me. [The wheelchair reveal]. You don't know who you're dealing with. Don't ever tell me what I can't do, ever. This is destiny. This is destiny. This is my destiny. (Yelling) I'm supposed to do this dammit. Don't tell me what I can't do. Don't tell me what I can't. . ."
White Rabbit
"I'm an ordinary man Jack, meat and potatoes, I live in the real world. I'm not a big believer in magic. But this place is different. It's special. The others don't want to talk about it because it scares them. But we all know it. We all feel it. Is your white rabbit a hallucination? Probably. But what if everything that happened here, happened for a reason? What if this person that you're chasing is really here?"
"I don't know. But I've looked into the eye of this island. And what I saw was beautiful."
"Because a leader can't lead until he knows where he's going."
House of the Rising Sun
"Our very own Adam and Eve."
"Hey, just because I'm over 40 doesn't mean I'm deaf. I have both your albums. Although, I thought that your self-titled debut was much stronger effort than Oil Change. It's a shame what happened to the band. How long since you played?"
"Because I have faith, Charlie."
"Just hand it to me. You're going to run out. My guess is sooner rather than later. Painful detox is inevitable. Give it up now at least it will be your choice."
"I know a lot more about pain than you think. I don't envy what you're facing. But I want to help. (Charlie walks away). Do you want your guitar?"
"What I know is that this island might just give you what you're looking for, but you have to give the island something."
Moth
"If I did that you wouldn't have a choice, Charlie. And having choices, making decisions based on more than instinct is the only thing that separates you, from him (the boar)."
"Come here. I'm going to show you something. (They walk to a plant with a cocoon on it). What do you supposed is in that cocoon, Charlie?"
"No, it's much more beautiful than that. That's a moth cocoon. It's ironic, butterflies get all the attention; but moth's--- they spin silk, they're stronger, they're faster."
"You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge. It's in there right now, struggling, it's digging it's way through the thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it, take my knife, gently widen the opening, and the moth would be free. But it would be too weak to survive. The struggle is nature's way of strengthening it. Now this is the second time you've asked me for your drugs back. (He hold the heroin up). Ask me again and it's yours."
"Well, I'm afraid the only witness to my whereabouts is the boar that I was skinning for our dinner. I heard you were trying to send out a distress call? So it would seem whoever attacked you has a reason for not wanting to get off the island. Maybe someone who is profiting from our current circumstances? And from what I've seen you and Mr. Sawyer share a certain animosity."

"You know what's happening."
"He was your responsibility but you gave him away, Claire. Everyone pays the price now."
"Yep. You already know my name. I lived most of my life in Tustin, CA."
"I was looking for something."
"No. It found me. Anything else?"
All the Best Cowboys
"I don't know. Footprints. At least three distinct sets all over the place. It looks like there might have been a struggle."
"Drag marks. Here. And Here."
"It certainly feels like it was Ethan, doesn't it?"
"We can't account for all of our people. And, more importantly, who's to say they're even our people?"
"Sayid said there were others."
"We need to prepare. We could be back at the caves in 10 minutes, organize a search party, get wea. . "
"By following Ethan's trail. No one can walk through the wilderness without leaving signs, bending blades of grass, breaking twigs, especially with captives in tow. And yes, I could use another hand if you're up for it."
"Good idea. We're going north. I suggest you go south."
"I hunted with Ethan. I spent time with him. I never sensed anything off. But for everything that I know about hunting, tracking. . . whoever he is, he knows more. If we catch up with him, I don't want anything to happen to the only trained physician on the island. So go back, be the doctor. Let me be the hunter."
"I'm not so sure. There's another trail here."
"These are footprints. People moved off this way."
"I was a regional collection supervisor for a box company."
"I'm sure there are people who can handle it, temporarily. It's going to start raining, in one minute."
"Give or take a few seconds. You should turn around, Boone, head back."
"The trail's been cold for a quarter mile, dangerous terrain ahead. If you start now, you'll make it back before dark."
"No, Boone, we're not lost."
"Don't you feel it?"
"It."
"Steel."
"That's what we're going to find out."
Special
"See this knot, Walt? I want you to aim for it, right here. Focus on it, alright? Picture it in your mind's eye. You know what that is, right? The mind's eye?"
"That's right. Now do it again. But see it. See it before you do it. Visualize the path. See it. See it."
"Easy, easy, easy. You're the one that was waving the knife around. He was just trying to make sure you didn't hurt someone. Michael, I know it's been difficult to bond with your son. You know why he's formed an attachment to me? Because I treat him like an adult; you still treat him like a boy."
"He's been through more than most people in their entire lifetime. Maybe you haven't spent enough time with him to see it, but he's different. "
"And we're not back home. As long as we're here, I think Walt should be allowed to realize his potential."
"You're father doesn't want us spending time together."
"But he's your father. And he cares about you. And you need to show him respect. I'm serious, Walt. You're not to come to me anymore."
"You can't hear everything, Boone. The sooner you learn that, the better."
Hearts and Minds
"You need to put aside your differences with Sayid."
"He's very competent. We don't want to make an enemy of him. We're going to want him on our side."
"Plenty of fruit and fish to go around. What we're doing here is far more important. [He bends to uncover the hatch.] Right now, this is our priority.

hands. Years later a visiting prince came into Michelangelo's studio and found the master staring at a single 18 foot block of marble. Then he knew that the rumors were true - that Michelangelo had come in everyday for the last four months, stared at the marble, and gone home for his supper. So the prince asked the obvious: what are you doing? And Michelangelo turned around and looked at him, and whispered, sto lavorando, I'm working. Three years later that block of marble was the statue of David."
"Well, that's what we have to figure out. That's why we're sitting here. I mean, how do you open a hatch that has no handle, no latch, no discernable way of opening it?"
Boone: You know, we're going to have to tell them. Locke: Tell them what? Boone: What we found. You know, they're not going to keep believing that we're coming out here hunting. We never go back. . . Locke: They're not ready. They won't understand it. Boone: I don't think I understand it. Locke: That's the problem. Boone: Look, at least I've got to tell Shannon. Locke: Why? Boone: What do mean, why? She's my sister. Locke: Why do you care about her so much? Boone: You don't know her man. She's smart, she's special in a lot of ways. Locke: Fair enough. Boone: She's been asking me about this. I can't keep lying to her. Locke: You mean you can't keep lying to her, or you can't stand the way she makes you feel because you're lying to her? Boone: Both. Whatever. Look, she can keep a secret. Locke: You're sure? Boone: Yes, I'm sure. Locke: No, I mean, are you sure you want to do this? Boone: I've got to get her off my back. She keeps asking me about this, she keeps asking me about you, about the whole thing. Locke: You're sure you've thought through the ramifications? Boone: Yes. Locke : So be it. [Locke hits Boone on the back of his head with his knife.]
"I'm doing this, Boone, because it's time for you to let go of some things. Because it's what's best for you. And, I promise, you're going to thank me for this later."
"Whether you stay is up to you. The camp is 4 miles due west."
"Is that what it made you see?"
"Gave you an experience that I believe was vital to your survival on this island."
"It was only as real as you made it."
"How did you feel? When she died?"
"Yes. Time to let go. [Locke gets up and grabs his pack.] Follow me."
Homecoming
"About a mile north. We were looking for the dog."
"Oh, if we don't bring Claire to him? Rhetorical, Jack. Same thing happens tonight as happened last night."
"Jack, I'm not a cold man. I feel for the loss of one of our own, but nothing fundamental's changed. Wherever he is, wherever he comes from, we're on Ethan's turf. He has the advantage. To him we're nothing more than a bunch of scared idiots with sharp sticks."
Outlaws
"My sister, Jeanie, died when I was a boy. Fell off the monkey bars and broke her neck. And my mother, well, my foster mother she blamed herself, of course. Thought she wasn't watching close enough. So, she stopped eating, stopped sleeping. The neighbors started talking, afraid she might do something to herself, I guess. [Sipping coffee] Oh, that's good. Anyway, about 6 months after Jeanie's funeral this golden retriever comes padding up our driveway, walks right into our house, sits down on the floor, and looks right at my mother, there on the couch. And my mother looks back at the dog. After about a minute of this, of them both staring at each other like that, my mother burst into tears. Beautiful dog, no tags, no collar, healthy, and sweet. The dog slept in Jeanie's old room, on Jeanie's old bed and stayed with us until my mother passed 5 years later. Then, disappeared back to wherever it was she came from in the first place."
"Well, that would be silly. But my mother thought it was, thought that Jeanie had come back to tell her the accident wasn't her fault, let her off the hook."
In Translation
"Okay, it's personal, by why take it out on our best chance of getting off the island? Why would any one of us block an attempt to get home? We're so intent on pointing the finger at one another that we're ignoring the simple undeniable truth that the problem isn't here, it's there. [pointing to the jungle] They've attacked us, sabotaged us, abducted us, murdered us. Maybe it's time we stop blaming us and start worrying about them. We're not the only people on this island and we all know it. "
Numbers
"How's that coming? Your memory?"
"Well, maybe I can help. I'm good at putting bits and pieces together."

Ada thought you might like this. It pertains to what is coming ahead. She said it will help refresh you on Sayid.
Pilot, Parts 1 and 2
It's dual-band military spec. Chances are the battery is good, but the radio is dead
I was a military communications officer.
I fought in the Gulf War.
The Republican Guard.
Seems to be, except we're not picking up a signal.
Hey, we've got a bar. Mayday, mayday.
No, no, no, no, no. It's not broken. We can't transmit because something else is already transmitting.
Somewhere close. The signal's strong.
It could be a Sat4, maybe a radio signal.
It's a loop. Iteration, it's repeating the same message. The counter, the next number will end 533. ("Iteration: 17294533").
It's a running count of the number of times the message has repeated. It's roughly 30 seconds long so, how long.
16 years.
16 years and 5 months, that's the count.
The iterations. It's a distress call, a plea for help, a mayday. If the count is right it's been playing over and over for 16 years.
Walkabout
If the French woman's transmission has truly been playing on a loop for 16 years then there must be a power source on the island. A significant one.
Hypothetically, yes. I'm making an antenna of sorts. With a few of mounted at different points on the island I may be able to use the transceiver to triangulate the signal, find out where it's coming from.
It appears you are as anxious to get off this island as I am.
I thought I'd lost this. (Takes Nadia's picture) Thank you.
I suppose I'll just try again. Of course I have no welding iron, no rivets, scorched wiring. And it seems I must continue to lie to anyone who asks me what it is I'm actually doing.
House of the Rising Sun
Tikrit, Iraq.
It's about time. I am dying of thirst.
I think I'll let him (Jin) sit in the sun a while longer. Then I'll take his wife aside, find some way to communicate. I think she knows why he attacked Michael.
You're serious? Is there a reason you didn't consult us when you decided to form your own civilization?
Well, what happened to live together, die alone?
Our best hope of survival is in being spotted by a plane or a ship, and for that we need to organize everyone to keep that signal fire burning while others scout the island for supplies. Digging in anywhere else is suicide.
I'm not going to admit defeat.
(Sayid approaches Michael) Michael: Now what? I already gave you my statement, sheriff. Sayid: I came to apologize. I shouldn't have been suspicious. You were the victim in the attack this morning. Michael: I appreciate that, but I can tell you didn't come all the way over here just to say you're sorry. Sayid: People are seriously considering following Jack to the caves. I'd like to know where you stand. Michael: Right here. I've got one priority right now and that's to get my kid off this island. A boat passes, I'm not going to be on the hook for missing it.

Sayid: Good.
The Moth
Three antenna. Three points of a triangle. One here on the beach. Another, Kate will position in the jungle, roughly two kilometers in, and the third I'll take to high ground, up there. If the French transmission is coming from somewhere from within our triangulation, I'll be able to locate the source. But there are two complications.
No worse than the odds of us surviving that plane crash.
Not like this one. The tail section broke off while we were still in the air. Our section cart wheeled through the jungle and yet we escaped with nothing but a few scrapes. How do you explain that?
No one's that lucky. We shouldn't have survived.
Five o'clock. Watch for my flare, then it's your turn. I don't trust him.
Yes. Yes. (he turns on the transceiver and it says "Acquiring signal") Where are you? (Screen says "Receiving Signal") Yes!!! ("Screen shows a strong signal) Where are you? Where are you?
Confidence Man
Sayid: We were trying to find the source of the distress call. I saw the flare from the beach and then the flare from Sawyer's position in the jungle. I switched on my antenna, activated the transceiver, and then darkness. Whoever hit me came from behind. Jack: They destroyed the equipment? Sayid: Yes. Jack: Listen, we're going to figure this out, but don't do anything. . . Sayid: I will do whatever I need to do to find the man responsible.
Sayid: Locke. Where were you last night, around sunset? Locke: Well, I'm afraid the only witness to my whereabouts is the boar that I was skinning for our dinner. I heard you were trying to send out a distress call? So it would seem whoever attacked you has a reason for not wanting to get off the island. Maybe someone who is profiting from our current circumstances? And from what I've seen you and Mr. Sawyer share a certain animosity. Sayid: No, he has an alibi. Just before I was struck, he set off a bottle rocket, a signal we had worked out. Two kilometers away. He wouldn't have the time to go. . . Locke: Unless he found a way to time delay the fuse on his rocket. Sayid: How could he possibly have. . . Locke: Anyone who watches television knows how to improvise a slow fuse. Use a cigarette. (Locke hands Sayid his knife) Locke: Just in case there's a next time.
Sayid: No, not you, me. I served 5 years in the Republican Guard. Jack: I thought you were a communications officer. Sayid: Part of my training entailed getting the enemy to communicate. Just give me 10 minutes with him. He'll give us the medicine. Is that a yes?
We do not have bamboo in Iraq, although we do have something similar, reeds. But their effect is the same when the shoots are inserted underneath the fingernails.
Sayid: He's lying. Can't you see that? He's been lying from the beginning. He doesn't want us to get off this island. That's why he attacked me. Jack: Hold on a minute. Sayid: He destroyed the transceiver. Jack: You don't know that.
Solitary
A science team armed with rifles? Was Robert on the team?
And Alex, was he, too?
Your distress signal? The message I heard, you said, "It killed them all."
Who were the carriers?
What others? What is the Black Rock? Have you seen other people on this island?
Not safe, what's not safe?
If we're lucky? It might be that thing out there. The monster.
The writing on the back of Nadia's photograph. I know what it's like to hold on to someone. I've been holding on for the past 7 years to just a thought, a blind hope that somewhere she's still alive. But the more I hold on, the more I pull away from those around me. The only way out of this, this place, is with their help. Come with me. You don't have to be alone, Danielle.
Rousseau, who is Alex?
Raised by Another
Listen to me. I found her, the French woman
The woman, on the island. I had to come back. I had to come back. We're not alone.
Sayid: What do you want? Sawyer: Dr. DoRight doesn't trust me with his antibiotics so I have to hump it up here everyday just to get my meds. (Picks up a knife). You know, a less magnanimous man than I might just be thinking he could beat the ever-living-snot out of you right now and without fear of reprisal. Sayid: You want to take a shot? Take it. Know that I left this camp out of shame for what I did to you. It was never my intention to return. Sawyer: Sorry, fresh out of sweet forgiveness. If it wasn't your intention to return then why did you? Sayid: I was taken prisoner by the French woman. Sawyer: The one who's been sending out a distress signal for 16 years? She's alive? Sayid: She was on a science expedition. She said their ship wrecked. Sawyer: She alone? Sayid: She said that there are others on this island. Sawyer: Her people? Sayid: No. She believed that they had all gotten sick. She murdered her entire team. Sawyer: Right. And these others, who are. . . Sayid: I don't know. She's never seen them. Sawyer: Oh, she's never seen them, but she knows they're there. Sayid: If you believe her. Sawyer: Do you? Sayid: Maybe. Maybe not. But on my way back I heard something in the jungle surrounding me. Sawyer: Something like what? Sayid: Have you got something to say to me Sawyer, or are you going to continue asking me questions you know I don't have the answers to? Sawyer: Tide's coming up the beach. Plane hull's almost in the water. Kept your signal fire burning.
Whatever the Case May Be
Everything is getting washed out to sea. This can't be normal. The tide shifting so suddenly, rising in so short a time.
I just hope that moving up the coast will make a difference.
Sayid: I think you'll find people slightly wary of entering the jungle after what happened to the pregnant girl. Not to mention whatever that thing is. Jack: Sayid, I need you to take me back to the French woman, Rousseau. Claire's still out there. Now, Rousseau mentioned that there are others on this island. Sayid: Her mind is gone. Jack: You heard them yourself. Sayid: I don't know what I heard. Jack: You said that. . . Sayid: The wind, Jack. It was the wind playing tricks. Jack: Okay, then, what about the papers that you took from her. . . the documents, the maps. I mean, isn't there anything here that. . . Sayid: I'm (good?) at mathematics and decryption, but these equations are beyond anything I've ever seen. There are these notes in French accompanying some of the maps and diagrams. If I could translate them I might be able to make sense of it, but. . . Jack: What? Sayid: Perhaps some things are best left untranslated.
We're quite close to the equator. The sun might be stronger than what you're used to.
Your brother? No. The papers contain equations accompanied by notations in French. If I could understand the notations then. . .
You're the only person on this island who speaks French.
Shannon: A des reflets d'argent. La mer des reflets changeants. The sea of sparkles? No, wait, um, the sea of silver sparkles that change. (Laughs) It's the same as the last one. Sayid: Are you sure? (Sharply) But the equation is completely different; it doesn't relate. What you're saying doesn't make any sense. Shannon: Okay? Sayid: What about this one? It should say something about latitude or longitude, something about the stars. Shannon: Okay, just give me some room, okay? Um, next to the pond, blue, um, blue eternity, blue eternity? No, wait, no, blue infinity. Sayid: Blue infinity? Shannon: Blue infinity. There's something about this that is so familiar. Sayid: You've been telling me what sounds very much like nonsense for the past hour and now it seems to me ---. Shannon: Okay, A- I told you that my French sucks, and B- this isn't my nonsense, okay? Did you ever think that after 16 years on mystery fricking island your friend might not be quite adjusted? Sayid (Gathers up papers): This was a mistake.
Hearts and Minds
Sayid: Orienteering. I'm trying to make something of Rousseau's maps, but. . . Locke : There's nothing to make. Sayid: Exactly. Locke: Well, you made a compass. I haven't seen one of those since I was a Weebelo. Sayid: What's a Weebelo? Locke: It's half way between a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. Sayid: And what does a Weebelo do? Locke: Gets badges, mostly. Ties knots, identifies birds. I wasn't the most popular kid. [Pregnant pause.] I'll leave you to it. [Hands him the compass from his safari vest.] Maybe this will help your cause. Sayid: Don't you need this?

Locke: Not anymore.
Sayid: Let me ask you something. . . which way do you think north is? Jack: Sorry? Sayid: North? Which way is it? Jack: Okay. The sun's going to set over there, so that makes that west. (Points) That'd be north. Yeah. Sayid: Correct. That's where north should be. (Shows him compass) Yet that is north. Jack: I'm not. . . Sayid: A minor magnetic anomaly might explain a variance of 2 or 3 degrees, but not this. Jack: What are you saying? Sayid: I'm saying this compass is obviously defective. Jack: Where'd you get it? Sayid: Locke gave it to me this afternoon. Jack: Locke? Where'd you see Locke? Sayid: About a mile east of here, walking through the jungle. At least I think it's east.
Special
Once I realized these equations were coordinates, latitude and longitude, I assumed the French woman was trying to determine the location of the island. But it was incomplete, the notations fragmented.
But when I laid the pages down like this (layers several pages to reveal a triangulation) I realized it wasn't showing the location of the island. I think it's a location on the island. Specifically, here.
We're not, no. But this may be the transmitter sending out the distress call. And it's power source.
The chances of surviving the rough waters? The odds of finding a shipping lane?
The French woman mentioned something about her team returning from the Black Rock. The triangle on the map. Maybe it's the triangle on the map.
Homecoming
The girl is pregnant. Very pregnant. Are we supposed to believe that she escaped from him?
Ethan infiltrated us. Whoever he is and wherever he comes from, he's intelligent. Who's to say he didn't even send Claire?
Then tell me, doctor, how many times have you diagnosed actual amnesia and such a selective brand of it.
If you want to capture Ethan, we have to ensnare him. And the only way do that is by giving him what he wants.
He'll be surrounded at 5 points. Everyone will be in visual contact with you. Make sure you stay in the area I've shown you. Remember, guns are the measure of last resort. We want him alive.
He'll be surrounded at 5 points. Everyone will be in visual contact with you. Make sure you stay in the area I've shown you. Remember, guns are the measure of last resort. We want him alive.
All I'm saying is that what happened with Ethan will be with you for the rest of your life.
In Translation
Do you have a past in the Navy you neglected to tell me about?
How does a woman like you learn to tie a perfect bolen knot?
I'd like to talk to you about Shannon. It's very possible your sister and I are going to become more than just friends.
Numbers
I was brought unconscious to her camp. When I escaped I was disoriented. I don't know how to find her.
Look! I don't even know what these papers mean. For all I know they could be the ravings of her disturbed mind - song lyrics mixed with equations. If this map is pointing to her, then you should know she resides here, in this area. She gave it a name, Territoire Fonce, Shannon translated it. It means "dark territory". Does that sound like a place you'd like to visit?
It stops here. It goes into the ground. This poses somewhat of a problem.
I never saw this before.
No, but her team could have. This is familiar, this area. We're close.
She knew. She knew that one day I'd come back and bring others. So she abandoned this place, booby-trapped it, and moved on.

Ada sends her love, and says you may need this as a refresher in getting to know Sawyer:
Pilot, Part 1 & 2
This guy was sitting in the back row of business class the whole flight. Never got up. Hands folded underneath a blanket. And for some reason, just pointing this out, the guy I saw next to him didn't make it.
You don't think I saw them pull you out of line before we boarded.
Oh great, let's trust this guy.
Shut up, lardo.
Whatever you say, doc. You're the hero.
I'm a complex guy, sweetheart.
Okay, wide open space. You should check the radio, see if we're good.
I'm not asking you to keep it on all day.
Just check the damn radio.
Probably bear village. How the hell would I know?
I got if off one of the bodies.
Yeah, one of the bodies.
They do if they're a U.S. Marshall, sweet cheeks. There was one on the plane.
I saw a guy lying there with an ankle holster so I took the gun. I thought it might come in handy. Guess what? I just shot a bear.
Because he had a clip on badge. (He holds it up). I took that too, thought it was cool.
You're as suspicious of me as I am of you.
Fine, I'm the criminal. You're the terrorist. We can all play a part. (To Shannon) Who you want to be?
I know your type.
Oh, now's a good time to check the radio. Not before, but now.
I'll tell you what would do that. This guy not fixing the radio. This thing doesn't even work.
What kind of transmission is it?
There's no transmission.
You speak French or not, because that would be nice.
Does anyone know what the hell he's talking about?
Don't forget to carry the 1, chief.
Or, she's not. You don't even speak French.
If someone came why is it still playing?
Tabla Rasa
I'm not stopping. You all have a nice cookout
Oooo, afraid the trees are going to get us?
Well, if you're so worried about me, how about you give me the clip back?
Okay. Really enjoyed the puppet show. Fantastic. But we're stuck in the middle of damn nowhere. How about we talk about that other thing --- You know that transmission Abdul picked up on his little radio? The French chick that said "They're all dead". The transmission's been on a loop for --- How long was it, Freckles?
Right. Let's talk about that.
You took my gun off me, boy?
Yeah, give it to Al Jerzeera, he'll protect us.
Jack enters the fuselage with a flashlight, looking for prescription bottles. Something moves, and flashlight reveals Sawyer. Sawyer: Boo. Jack: What are you doing in here? Sawyer: Trick or treat, same as you. Jack: You're looting. Sawyer: Aww, you say potato. . . Jack: What's in the bag? Sawyer: Booze, smokes, couple of Playboys. What's in yours?

Jack: Medicine. Sawyer: Well, that about sums it up, don't it? Jack: Do you do this back home, too - steal from the dead? Sawyer: Brother, you've got wake up and smell the bull crap here, rescue ain't coming. You're just wasting your time. You're trying to save a guy who last time I checked had a piece of metal the size of my head sticking out of his bread basket. Let me ask you something? How many of those pills are you going to use to fix him up? Jack: As many as it takes. Sawyer: Yeah? How many you got? You're just not looking at the big picture, Doc. You're still back in civilization. Jack: Yeah? And where are you? Sawyer: Me? I'm in the wild.
Need a light? [He throws her the lighter] Came by to thank you. You going to ask what for?
For taking that gun away from me.
It's sticking out of your denims, ain't it? I sure wouldn't want to be the one with that gun right now. Because everyone sitting out there listening to that poor boy scream all night knows what's got to be done. Only one that can do it is the one with that gun. Don't act so surprised. I heard you tell the hero the same thing. Hell, there's only one bullet left - be damned near poetic.
What you couldn't. Look, I get where you're coming from being a doctor and all, but he wanted it. Hell, he asked me. So, I don't like it any more than you do, but something had to be done.
I was aiming for his heart.
So what is. . . I only had one bullet.
Walkabout
Right behind you, Jackass.
How about no.
Well if one of us wouldn't eat more than his fair share. . .
Hey don't patronize me, pork pie.
Stay out of this metro.
My own stash. I found it in there.
(Sawyer approaches Claire who is readying the fuselage memorial) Hey --- um, these were --- uh. I found these the other day when I was --- Alright --- just --- just take them. (Hands her many passenger wallets).
The mighty huntress returns. What's for dinner, hon. . .
You're in my light, sticks.
Light, comma, sticks. As in those legs of yours.
I made this birthday wish 4 years ago.
You really think I stole your damn water?
I don't give nothing to nobody
I traded Mr. Miyagi the last of my water for a fish he caught. We worked it out caveman style.
Water has no value, Freckles. It's gonna rain sooner or later. And hell, I'm an optimist.
So, how does it feel?
Taking my place at the top of everyone's most hated list. Sucks, don't it?
House of the Rising Sun
A little louder Omar. Maybe then she'll understand you.
Well, well, well --- if it ain't the belle of the ball? So, what's it like having both the doctor and Captain Falafel fighting over you? Just call em how I seem em, Freckles? Truth be told, I'm not the only one wondering where you're going to weigh in on this whole moving off the beach thing? Are you going with the pessimists, or staying here and waiting for the rescue boats?
Well, that's the real trick, isn't it? We all pack up stakes for the caves and the next day a plane passes by, they're going to go on their merry way and be none the wiser. On the other hand, stay here, get eaten by boars, fall off a rock --- not going to be anyone around to answer that 911 call.
The Moth
We are testy. Still upset about your little break up? You and Jacko?
Sorry sport, you just missed her. Her and Mohammad headed into the woods about 10 minutes ago.
The difference between us ain't that big, sweetheart. I guarantee you, if he had survived a few more weeks on this island you'd have figured that out.
Ah, damn. Didn't I tell you? Word from the valley is Saint Jack got himself buried in a cave-in.
Confidence Man
No, I whooped a thief cuz he was going through my stuff.
Which I had to move because everybody just wants to help themselves. Look, I don't know what kind of Commie-share-fest you're running over in cave town, but down here possession's 9 10ths. And a man's got a right to protect his property.
Why, you want to see who's taller?
You sure you want to make this your problem, doc?
Just trust me, there isn't any time to explain. I'm already late. I miss this meeting, the whole deal's a bust, alright? That's everything I have. 140,000 dollars. There's an oil mining operation in the Gulf of Mexico, drilling platforms. 300,000 dollars buys one share, but as soon as you invest a Government sponsored fund kicks in and triples your money in two weeks. Triples it.
I found an investor in Toronto, wants in 50/50. In two weeks we'll be splitting almost a million bucks. Jess, this is my chance.
Freckles, I got so many answers to that question, I wouldn't even know where to start.
You think you understand me?
Shut up. You want to know what kind of human being I am? Read it. Read it. Out loud.
Well, it's about time cowboy. Been telling you since day one, we're in the wild. Didn't think you had it in you.
Because business between friends is always a little sticky. I don't know you well, but I know your wife. Working with her at the auto dealership, I'm just not sure I'm comfortable.
That's it? That's all you got? Splinters? No wonder we kicked you *** in the Gulf. . . (screams)
No. Don't stop now. I think my sinuses are clearing. Pool guy: Tell me Sawyer, do you want to die? Cuz when a man walks in my place and tells me he left a 160,000 of my hard won dollars in the care of a civilian I've got to ask myself if what I'm hearing isn't the desperate cry for the sweet release of death. Sawyer: Deal closed today. See, women are easy. A few cosmos, a couple of stunts they haven't seen between the sheets, and they think the scam's their idea. Now husbands? They need to touch the money, smell it, believe that if they had the brass to put that suitcase in the trunk of their family sedan and speed away, they just might have a chance at being an honest-to-gosh outlaw. PG: Okay, Tex. You got your grift so pat, what'd you need my money for? Where's your seed from the last couple you roped? Sawyer: Well, what can I say? I like earning it as much as I like spending it. PG: Be that as it may, I know a thing or two about making people suffer. Now you have my money, plus 50%, by noon tomorrow or I'll tell you all about it.
Baby, I am tied to a tree in a jungle of mystery. I just got tortured by a damn spinal surgeon and a gen-U-ine I-raqi. Of course, I'm serious. You're just not seeing the big picture here, Freckles. You really going to let that girl suffocate because you can't bring yourself to give me one little kiss? Hell, it's only first base. Lucky for you, I ain't greedy.
The book washed up on shore, went in the drink with the rest of. . .
You've been waiting for this, haven't you? Now you get to be the hero again, cuz that's what you do, fix everything up all nice. Tell him to let go, Freckles. We already made out, what else I got to live for? Hey Jack, there's something you should know, if the tables were turned, I'd watch you die.
Alrighty. It looks like we're in the oil business
Deal's off.
It was his name. He was a confidence man. Romanced my momma to get to the money --- wiped them out clean --- left a mess behind. So I wrote that letter. I wrote it knowing one day I'd find him. But that ain't the sad part. When I was 19, I needed 6 grand to pay these guys off I was in trouble with. So I found a pretty lady with a dumb husband who had some money. And I got them to give it to me. How's that for a tragedy? I became the man I was hunting --- Became Sawyer. Don't you feel sorry for me. (Sawyer takes the letter from Kate). Get the hell out. Get out!
Solitary
Of course, what do you have to feel guilty about? I mean, you just let that damn Arab torture me. Stood by and watched. You figure you patch me up, buy you a ticket into heaven? Only reason you're here---
Doctor playing golf. Woo, boy howdy, now I've heard everything. What's next, cop eating a donut?
I thing I'll pass on that, Freckles. Not big on crowds. And let's face it, the crowds' not to hot on me, either.

Manifest is in the brown suitcase. Take it.
All the Best Cowyboys
Who got taken by what?
Ethan?
Took them why? And who the hell's Ethan?
Ever think he might have lied about his name?
Alrighty, Tattoo, where do you think Ethan came from?
You got yourself one hell of an imagination, kid.
So a tribe of evil natives planted a ringer in the camp to kidnap a pregnant girl and a reject from VH-1 has-beens. Yeah, fiendishly clever. And why am I getting the evening news from a 6 year old.
Okay, then it must be true.
Well, well, well. I don't know if you Islam's got a concept of karma, but I get the sense this island just served you up a heaping platter of cosmic payback.
Dr. Do-Right doesn't trust me with his antibiotics, so I have to hump it up here everyday just to get my meds. (Takes a knife from the table). You know, a less magnanimous man than I might just be thinking he could beat the ever-living-snot out of you right now and without fear of reprisal.
Sorry, fresh out of sweet forgiveness. If it wasn't your intention to return then why did you
The one who's been sending out a distress signal for 16 years? She's alive?
She alone?
Her people?
Right. And these others, who are. . .
Oh, she's never seen them, but she knows they're there.
Tide's coming up the beach. Plane hull's almost in the water. Kept your signal fire burning.
Stalking you? I was protecting you.
It's my knee. I'll tell you how bad it is. What the hell you doing out here anyway?
Yeah, well, you shouldn't be out here alone. Not after what happened. . .
Oh, of course. (Mocking Kate): I don't need protection. I can take care of myself. Me Kate. Me throw rock
What? You smell blood on the wind?
I need to soak my sore knee. C'mon, Freckles. After all we've been through on this damn island, don't we deserve something good? What? You going to say no? You some sort of no-fun-navel-gazing-mopey type?
Yeah, I'm going to go check them out.
Hey, I got myself a wallet.
Wouldn't happen to have your key on you would you?
That case ain't yours, is it?
Not what it looks like. [Sawyer watches as Kate puts her pants back on]. Something you want to tell me about this little suitcase, Freckles?
Impact velocity. Physics, my ***. Alright. . . [He drops the case but it doesn't open.] Son of a *****, unbelievable. [Kate runs up and grabs the case.] Hey, hey, don't even think about it. Hey, damn it.
Hell, Freckles, I knew you wanted it. I just didn't know how bad. [Kate tries to head-butt him again.] Whoa-hoa, you're going to have to come up with a new move. [She head-butts him again.] Ow, god, okay, okay. [Sawyer grabs the case.] Okay, this is silly. I've got a proposition for you. You tell me what's inside and I'll give it to you.
Hell, there's no way to open the damn thing. At this point all I care about is satisfying my own curiosity. [Kate lunges for the case.] Whoa, easy sweetheart, I don't really care what it is. What's burning me up is why it means so much to you. . .. Last chance. Alright.
Doctor? What can I do you for? [Jack points to the case.] Figured she'd get you to do her dirty work for her. So what? Are we going to wrestle for it?
Sawyer: I'm just going to give it to you? Jack: Yeah. Sawyer: Why would I want to do that? Jack: Cephalexin. Sawyer: Yeah, go on? Jack: That's the antibiotic I've been giving you for the knife wound in your arm. You're right in the middle of the treatment cycle now, if I keep giving you the pills you're going to be right as rain. But I'm going to stop giving you the pills. And for 2 days you're going to think you're all good, then it's going to start to itch. The day after that the fever's going to come and you're going to start seeing red lines running up and down your arm. A day or two after that you'll beg me to take the case, just to cut off your arm. Sawyer: That's a nice story, Jack. And, even if it were true I don't think you could do it. Jack: You're wrong. Sawyer: Did she tell you what's inside? [Jack shakes his head.] Yeah, me neither. [He gives the case to Jack.] Hope you got yourself some jaws-of-life back in cave-town, that's what it's going to take to pop this *****. Jack: I'll figure something out. Sawyer: I know you think you're doing her a favor. But however she talked you into doing this, she lied brother.
Hearts and Minds
--- And so I just gave it back to him. Hey! Yo! Crock hunter! How come nobody wants to hear my side of the story, huh? Just what kind of third world country ---
Charlie: You know, I could just go inside and. . . Sawyer (From behind them): Trick or treat. What are you two selling today? Charlie: Where's Claire's diary? Someone took it from her bag. Sawyer: Oh I get it, something goes missing and right away you figure it's got to be me that took it. Kate: Do you have the diary or not? Sawyer (presents diary out): You mean this one? Charlie: Give it to me. Sawyer: Now, I'm not sure that's the best idea. Maybe missy Claire don't want you reading it. Charlie: I wasn't going to read it. Sawyer: You're not curious what she wrote about you? Charlie: You bastard. Did you read it? Sawyer: Good literature's kind'a scarce around here. Charlie: He read it. Kate: Just give it to us. Sawyer: Dear Diary, I'm getting really freaked out by that has-been pop star. I think he's stalking me. Kate: Sawyer. Sawyer: Diary, the little limey runt just won't let up. (Charlie hits the wound on Sawyer's arm and Sawyer drops the diary and Charlie picks it up. Sawyer punches Charlie in the face) Charlie: You hit like a ponce. Sawyer: Oh, yeah. . . Kate: Enough! You didn't really read it, did you? Sawyer : I just hadn't gotten around to it yet.
Homecoming
Guess old Steve drew the short straw.
Well, I know at least one polar bear that seems to think so. (Jack hands Sawyer a gun) Where'd you get the hardware, Hoss?
How much ammo you got?
All 9's, right? 9 millimeters, guns?
'Cause if the lady wants to come. . . (Sawyer brings out a gun) Lifted this off the Marshal back in the old days. Remember him, don't you? Surly guy? Kind of square of jaw? Carries a Sig 9.
Yeah, well, bygones. And hell, 5 guns are better than 4.
--- Knockout. Nice one, Doc. Now, maybe somebody can tell me just who or what this son-of-***** is? (Ethan starts to get up) Uh, uh, uh, jungle boy. Not even for one second.
Outlaws
Well, genius, I think we got some bad info.
It was staring at me. Then it came at me, so I hit it, and it ran off into the jungle.
Well, laugh it up, Mohammad. But I come back and find my stuff's gone, I'm coming after you. Sayid, what did you hear? After you ran into the French woman you said you heard something in the jungle.
What did you hear?
What was it saying?
Forget it. I didn't hear anything.
Hibbs: I've got to hand it to you, Sawbucks. How you find women that beautiful to work your grift --- (Sawyer puts Hibbs against the wall) Sawyer: Now, if I'm not mistaken, I'm fairly certain I said I'd kill you if I ever saw you again. Hibbs: That's why I'm here, to make things right. Besides, we both know you ain't the killing type. Here. I figure that makes us even for the Tampa job. Sawyer: What could possibly make us even for the Tampa job? Hibbs: How about the known whereabouts of the man that ruined your life? I'm going to make myself a drink. You want one? You remember old man Parks, right? Ran camper for us on that gig in Atlanta.

Sawyer: Yeah, what about him? Hibbs: He's been working the wire at an off track parlor down in Sydney. Last week one of his regulars gets a little too sauced, starts running his mouth off about his glory days as a grifter. That guy --- Frank Duckett --- Real hard luck case --- gambling addict, alcoholic, runs a shrimp truck. Back in the day this guy, Duckett, was quite the hustler. He ran the romance angle. Hooked the wife, and took the husband for all the money. He was pretty good at it, too, from what I hear. ?Til, sadly, one of his marks in despair took a gun, shot up his wife and blew his own head off. All in front of their little boy. I paid Tony to pull his jacket. Turns out Frank Duckett used to be named Frank Sawyer. A name I believe you appropriated for yourself. Sawyer (Looks at photo): This is him? Hibbs: That's him.
Last night --- wrecked my tent. This morning when I went to get my tent back, it attacks me from behind and runs off into the jungle like a coward.
Good. Then if you'll excuse me, I've got some revenge to tend to.
Laurence: You must be Hibbs' mate. I did a few jobs with Hibbs back in the States. Nice enough fella. Sawyer: He's a son of a *****. Laurence: Right, indeed he is. A few disclaimers --- Australia doesn't allow it's citizens to carry handguns. You get nicked with this --- Sawyer: I'm not going to rat you out. Laurence: Secondly --- You know, I've been doing this for awhile and a man who buys a compact 357 with hollow point loads --- He's not looking to scare or steal. He's looking to kill. But when it comes down to it if he finds he doesn't have what it takes to do the job ---. Sawyer: Your sales pitch needs some work. Laurence: What I'm saying is, you look a man in eye and you point a gun at him, you find who you really are mate. And should you find you're not a killer, there's no refund. Sawyer: Won't be a problem.
Kate: Where'd you get that? Sawyer: Plane. Kate: Jack was looking for the liquor cart. Sawyer: It's a good thing I found it instead, then, huh?
Sawyer: Call it a way to get to know each other better. For example, I know you've never been to college. Kate: How do you know that? Sawyer: If you had, you'd have heard of I never. It's simple, you say I never and then you finish the sentence. If it's something you did you drink, if it's something you never did, you don't drink. Kate: That makes absolutely no sense. Sawyer: Learn by example. I never kissed a man. Now you drink 'cause you've kissed man. Your turn. Kate: I never implied that I've been to college when I never have. (Sawyer drinks) Sawyer: I never been to Disneyland. (Kate doesn't drink) Sawyer: Ah, that's just sad. Kate: I never wore pink. (Sawyer drinks) Kate: I knew it. Sawyer: The '80's. I never voted democrat. (Kate doesn't drink) Kate: I never voted. (Sawyer drinks) Sawyer: I've never been in love. Kate: You've never been in love? Sawyer: I ain't drinking, am I? (Kate drinks) Kate: I've never had a one night stand. (Sawyer drinks) Kate: Bottoms up, sailor. Sawyer: I've gotta drink for each one. Kate: Your turn. Sawyer: I've never been married. (Kate drinks a small sip) Kate: It didn't last very long. I never blamed a boar for all my problems. (Sawyer drinks) Sawyer: I never cared about having carte blanche because I just wanted to spend some time with the only other person on this island that just don't belong. (Kate drinks) Kate: I never carried a letter around for 20 years because I couldn't get over my baggage. (Sawyer drinks) Sawyer: I never killed a man. (Kate drinks, Sawyer drinks) Sawyer: Well, looks like we got something in common after all.
Tennessee.
James.
Sawyer: Again. Shephard: You tell 'em cowboy. These bastards think Americans can't hold their liquor. I --- uh --- I hate to hold my hand out, but I seem to have misplaced my wallet. Sawyer: Set him up. Shephard: I drink to you. What's your name, cowboy? Sawyer: Sawyer. Shephard: To Sawyer, may he find whatever he's looking for in the bottom of a glass. So --- Sawyer, what brings you to Sydney? Sawyer: Business. Shephard: You know why they call Australia "Down Under", don't you? Because it's as close as you can get to Hell without being burned. Sawyer: Why don't you leave the bottles. What'd you handle? Back in the States? Shephard: I was a Chief of Surgery. Sawyer: Was? Shephard: Yeah, was. Sawyer: But we're in hell, huh? Shephard: Don't let the air conditioning fool you, son. You are here, too. You are suffering. But don't beat yourself up about it. It's Fate. Some people are just supposed to suffer. That's why the Red Sox will never win the damn series. I have a son who's about your age. He's not like me. He does what's in his heart. He's a good man --- Maybe a great one. Right now, he thinks that I hate him. He thinks I feel betrayed by him. But what I really feel is gratitude --- and pride because of what he did to me. What he did for me. It took more courage than I have. There's a pay phone over there. I could pick it up and I could call my son. I could tell him about all this. I could tell him that I love him. One simple phone call and I could fix everything. Sawyer: Why don't you? Shephard: Because I am weak. This business that you have, will it ease your suffering? Sawyer: Yeah. Shephard: Then what are you doing here? Sawyer: It ain't that simple. Shephard: Of course it is. Unless you want to end up like me, of course it is.
Sawyer: Sawyer. (Shoots Duckett) I've got a letter for you. "Dear Mr. Sawyer ---" Duckett: Who? Sawyer: You used to go by the name of Sawyer. Duckett: What the hell are you talking about? You didn't have to --- Tell Hibbs, I would have paid ---. Sawyer: How do you know Hibbs? Duckett: You don't know what you're doing, do you? Sawyer: You borrowed money from Hibbs? Duckett: I was going to pay. It'll come back around.
Sawyer: Stick 'em up. Jack: Trying to be funny? Sawyer: Yeah. I was fresh out of pies to throw at you. Here you go, sheriff. Jack: I asked you for this 2 days ago. Sawyer: And I told you, stick it. I made a deal with your girlfriend. Jack: What did she give you? Sawyer: Nothing she wasn't willing to part with. Jack: That's why the Sox will never win the series. Sawyer: What's that? Jack: Huh? Sawyer: What'd you just say? Jack: I said that's why the Red Sox will never win the series. Sawyer: What the hell is that supposed to mean? Jack: Just something my father used to say. Went through life knowing that people hated him. Instead of taking responsibility for it, he just put it on fate. Said he was made that way. Sawyer: Your daddy? He a doctor, too? Jack: He was. He's dead. Why do you want to know about my father? Sawyer: No reason.
In Translation
What's the matter, doc? Feelin' left out?
Yep, bought myself a ticket on this little tub. Let me tell you, the fare was steep. [He tosses Michael a coil of cable]. I could've used that cable to hold up the whole east wing of my new beach house.
You messed up my ride, chief.
You're pretty scared, huh? Scared, you understand scared, don't you? Huh? If you ain't, you're going to be, Bruce. Folks down on the beach might have been doctors and accountants a month ago, but it's Lord of the Flies time, now.
Back off, Jack. It's got nothing to do with you.
You're going to lecture us about lying, Betty? From the look on his face, even your old man here didn't know you speak English. How do we know she's not covering for him?
Numbers
You want to hit that a little harder?
I am helping, Short Round. I'm keeping watch for arsonists.
[The first song Jack plays is] classical. It has to do with what the FB are really about. And yes, it's a biggie. ...when you find it, you will realize something. ... Song was adapted into a modern one in the 1930's or 40's, as many classical songs were by lazy film musical editors. Probably why it's familiar! It was in a biggie from I think the 40's.
(hint) how is Jack looking to you in the final scene? Hmmmmmmmm? ... not looking good, is he? Hope nothing's wrong.
Heart and Soul, the second song, was chosen for a reason. ... It was a popular song in 1939, LilyCat! People used to dance to it, isn't it pretty? Here are the words.
Heart and soul, I fell in love with you Heart and soul, the way a fool would do, madly Because you held me tight And stole a kiss in the night
Heart and soul, I begged to be adored Lost control, and tumbled overboard, gladly That magic night we kissed There in the moon mist
Oh! but your lips were thrilling, much too thrilling Never before were mine so strangely willing
But now I see, what one embrace can do Look at me, it's got me loving you madly That little kiss you stole Held all my heart and soul
No body, that's me. ... I am absolutely no one.
Most, but not all, of them in the FBs. ... Take the FB's in Do No Harm in order, and fish. You will find things. Also, watch for sounds in the non-FB. Grumble grumble. ... The FB in this eppy gave you more info than you are seeing. Take another look.
All dressed up and nowhere to go, that's what I am. ... Jack in the tux shop, NOTHING up my sleeves. ... Not shirtless, NO SLEEVES, and yes, it's the tattoo. Banshee's group are working on dating the FB.
tires blowing out seem to come up alot, don't they? Hmmmmmm?
Watch for the color clues. ... [Green is] Not the color I'm talking about. ... Make a list of the blacks and the whites in the episode!
Watch for the numbers given. ... Toward the last three hours, you will get some solid hints on the numbers. Not the reveal, just hints that pick up some speed.
... the monster is coming back. Soon.
You should be getting more in the last five hours on Jack's parents and Locke's parents. Things that help explain their views.
Yes, Jack is all alone at the family table when Sarah is making her pre-wedding toast.
Weird Christian comments at the pool, eh?
His name isn't Mark. ... Hey, trust me! His name ISN'T Mark! ... His name's not Mark.
Also, since you were smart enough to listen to Boone (I've been waiting days!), he also tell you what he wanted Shannon to know as they are working on him.
[Jack sweating profusely] ... That is weird, isn't it? Very weird indeed.
Flux. Whole island in flux, wavy lines all over the place! Dead man walking, second week in a row. Lions and monsters and bears, oh my! You can't save them all, Jack. Don't tell me what I can't do. You fixed me.
And some clarification:
Boone is apologizing for staying in the dang plane after LOCKE told him to get out! ... Locke didn't kill Boone! ...
A couple of more clues about not Marc, from northatrexton:
IMDB got it wrong................characters name is Marty Silverman. ... The flashback is longer than you saw................they are planning to use more of it before the end of the season.........or early next.
Here's another one from A replying to someone who pointed out that Jack may have killed Boone with the whole-blood transfusion:
Good catch, marsh! Jack was trying anything, and I do mean anything, to keep from facing the inevitable: You can't save them all. And you're right, he was not working well under pressure. As you know, there were other things that he did that even in those circumstances, working in those conditions, he shouldn't have done because the outcome was more of a detriment than a help. However, there is a reason he is acting strangely. Keept watching!
When a 3 ton plane falls you while you are stuck on a god-forsaken sort of deserted island where there are monsters, mad french women, unseen radio towers, Whisperers, disappearing children, and no emergency room, you are not going to live long enough to say goodbye to your trampy sister/lover.
you have seen the wavy lines before (Claire's diary, in various backgrounds in fb's). It's a sign that thing's are different on the island right now, and like the numbers, it's one of the visual cue's. Sounds are also important. Trust me. John Locke, Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Specific to the upcoming episode? Book II, chapter 21
Plant Jack asked Sun about was to treat headaches. Spoilers say Sawyer will be developing them soon. Foreshadowing for Jacks death? Are they setting Sun up as the physician?
Did Kate & Sawyer entering the pool trigger the high tide? Is this pool connected to the antenna? Maybe the moon cycle caused them to cut loose and enter the pool to begin with. (tying in the moon reference from the other thread) *re: One's idea that the crater may contain a lake/pool with the antenna below*
Jack identified with Kate's pain at the end when she said, "belonged to the man I killed" because he feels guilty
Should we each take a couple of episodes and gather information from the previous thread to create a synopsis of what we found for this thread? We kinda wandered all over in the other one. LOL Exploring that ol' island we were. ;0) Point me to one and I'll start gathering together.
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Go ahead, if you'd like. I got as far as page 22 when I was summarizing how the titles applied to each character. I'm going to start by copying those. I'm not sure where to tell you to begin. Would you like to start reading at p. 23 and tell me if there's anything that needs to be added to the summaries?
Also, if people could read the summaries as I post them and let me know if there's anything you feel needs changing, based on later discussions.
I know, it seems a little silly now, but I wish I'd done this with the first thread. I'm starting to fill it in now, but I might not get it done tonight.
cac, would you like us to go over our own individual posts in the other thread and get together a summary or what we think is important and leave the rubbish behind, so to speak?
End of page 3

That's an excellent idea, pysk. Yes, please everyone.
annipadanniRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I'd like to suggest that as we each review our own posts, and summarize our own post, that we re-post them here ourselves... do make it clear they were our own thoughts... since we have had some differing ideas and thoughs and theories.
I think pulling out and posting some aspects of the summary under each title thread would be good, but all in all... I would find it more helpful to know that so and so thought this or that - and it would be easiest to do so if that person posted the info in a post of their own.
Also, i want to make sure all of you get credit for all your great insights and breakthroughs and theories... even if we might not all always agree on all of them.
Does that make sense?
Even within our own posts thought - we could organize by heading. Also, perhaps we could post certain ideas/theories/thoughts about a particular episode AFTER cac's post summary for that episode, rather than at the end. This would ONLY be for summarizing PAST posts - from the original thread. That way, you know if you go to page whatever, for episode 5, you'll find everyone's past thoughs and theories abuot that episode following cac's main summary post for that episode.
again, does that make sense?
annipadanniRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
so, i would back and summarize all of my posts/thoughts/theories about pilot and post at the end of cac's summary of pilot...then continue on with each epi??? is that the thought here?
this would only be for past posts...then any new thoughts we all have...just continue at the end of the thread as always?
please clarify how you'd like it cac, thanks!
has anyone seen the thread about there possibly being 2 killed off, not just one? seems like some new news broke last night...ugh.
There's a thread going today about Locke's take on Ethan. Locke's comment about not being able to "read" Ethan.
Is Ethan the Tabula Rasa? The blank slate? Does he somehow do what he is programmed by others? Has no thoughts/emotions of his own and is only a reflection of those around him?
I can't remember back that far, did we see Ethan in this episode for the first time? Even in the background somewhere?
I'm gonna post this over there too.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2

anni, yes... that was my thought - but was just a suggestion.
as was mentioned, we wouldn't have to summarize ALL our posts, but what we felt was more relevant. If there's anything we'd like to let fall the wayside, that is fine too. There's always the original thread to refer to if needed.
anyway, if anyone else has any suggestions, I'm open. My main point is that many of us have had ideas or theories that we've put out there, or have posed thoughts or possibilities, and I for one would still like to know who originally posted many of those ideas and thoughts... even if excerpts are place in cac's summaries. So that's why i was suggesting we each still post our own past thread summaries, or highlights (might be better way to think about it).
i agree that we should reach an agreement/decision though before we all start on it, either way... so we're all on the same page.
cac, let us know what you think.
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Whatever you want; I don't care. If you want to use the extra blank ones I left, I can copy and paste there, giving credit, of course. If you want to edit these organizational messages, that would be fine. I'm not sure about replying to my episode posts because I tried that when I added later episodes to the old thread and it put them at the end anyway.
I'm not sure about replying to my episode posts because I tried that when I added later episodes to the old thread and it put them at the end anyway.
That's really strange - because it SHOULD put the new post right after the one you clicked the "reply" button on. That's why some newbies often have trouble - because they see an interesting post on an earlier page that they want to reply to, and instead of posting after the very last post on the last page, they'll just hit the reply button on the post they want to comment on, and that's where their post ends up. And then no one sees it because it's in the middle.
I guess to me it's not a matter or a concern about giving or getting "credit" - but I do know for me, I like to know and be able to refer back to whether something was One's thought or idea or theory, or anni's, or needs, or fed's, or slpy's, or psyks, or cac's, or Poor's, or whomever's... even mine. That's the only reason I suggested it. And I know, for me, I can better and more quickly determine and reference this by looking at the name of the person posting it.
Anyway, that's how I'd like to post mine at least - and that way I can also edit my own words and posts at any point if needed... if I decide I want something added or removed.
We don't have to post our own respective summaries after each episode summary post if wouldn't work technically, or if it would kind of mess up the organization of how you're setting this up. I only thought it would be easier to reference and find if we did it that way, but it certainly doesn't have to be done that way. Wherever you want us to post our stuff is fine with me.

* Carlton asked the audience whether it thought Locke is a good guy or a bad guy. Then, the moderator jokingly asked the cast if they thought Locke was a good guy. Ian's hand shot up, and he was the only one.
Is this strictly meant to be funny or are they telling us something?
I like this one too, so I thought I'd share it here:
* J.J. said that he ... thinks the fans come up with some amazing theories and he's awed by the connections they draw.
IF it will work correctly, I agree that that would be a good way to do it. If it starts to spread out the episodes too much, I can put an index at the front again. I just tried it once in the old thread, but it does happen to me all the time at the end of a thread if I type too slowly.
I suppose this is only temporary anyway as we'll probably have this thread filled in a few weeks too.
p.s. Apparently it works sometimes, I accidentally posted this after ME's previous post.

great, cac! Then we should do that then - post any previous post summaries after each specific episode summary post.... if your summary refers to a specific episode, that is.
Some of the highlights from our past posts might not fall under any one particular episode, but might have more to do with overall plot theories, clues, etc.
i've started adding external links to the External Links post on page 1. Please let me know of you think of good external links that would be good to add - which I think should be links we'd want to be sure to have on hand for reference.
End of page 4
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Do you have the links for the Mauntauk project, etc, handy? Those would be useful too.
I was just thinking that when this thread does get too long, maybe we could continue to update the summaries here while moving the discussion to another thread.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I think the plateaus seems shaped very strangely - one long strip, with smaller strips of plateau branching out from either side of the center strip - almost directly across in each case... like a fern.
One plateau, called the "second plateau" - is curved and follows what looks like a cove. The other looks straight. They are separated by a valley - which means the plateaus are on the tops of two oddly shaped mountain ridges.
The shape of the two pleateaus remind me of conductors of some sort. If this island IS man made, could the indicate the shape of the antennea underground - or some sort of conductors?
Thinking of psyk's post:
At this very moment, he saw clearly in his mind an iron rotor spinning rapidly in an rotating magnetic field, produced by the interaction of two alternating currents out of step with each other.
What if the plateau's are two gigantic conductors, creating two alternating currents, paired with the Black Rock (a giant piece of magnetite? - ie. a giant magnet) -creating a giant electromagnetic current... creating a field around the island... as well as electral current throughout the island?

Tesla also had the idea of creating a "wall of light" by manipulating electromagnetic waves in a certain pattern. This mysterious wall of light would enable time, space, gravity and matter to be altered at will, and engendered an array of Tesla proposals that seem to leap straight out of science fiction, including anti-gravity airships, teleportation and time travel.
This is the only other thing I've been able to find that really states Tesla's idea for time travel - in simple, non sci-fi terms.
Not sure how this helps explain why they're unable to get off the island, unless the Black Rock is a giant magnetic rock, and there is some sort of electrical current running through it, creating electromagnetic current that the original experiments tried to manipulate... and what has happened is that an electromagnetic current that surrounds the island and prevents anything from getting out.
One, the circle thingie on the map looks like the crater to me, from a top view.
And the triangle... actually... now that you say that...
Perhaps the triangle is the antennea... under the island. If you look at Map 3, you'll notice how the top point of the triangle (the 38) hits directly at the shoreline.
what if we're to view the triangle as if it's supposed to be going underground - not under the water out at see, but under the island... right where we see it.
It appears to me that the crater, which LOOKS like it's at the top of a volcano... or at least a large mountain, is directly above the point of the triangle. So the triange, which could be the antennea, is underground, directly below the volcano/crater at that point.
The Black Rock could either be the volcano, or a huge magnetic meteor that is in the crater.
My alternative thought is that the triangle indicates that the antennea is actually burried underground out at sea, right where we see the triangle, and the cable on the beach that we've seen goes from the antenna, into the forest, down into the ground and then to the Black Rock.
At an rate, I'm almost certain that the crater at the top of the volcano looking mountain is directly above that triangle on Map 3, and the tip of the triangle hits the shoreline directly under the crater.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Ok, this morning I got to thinking (dangerous!), and I think I figured out the question about how Danielle is managing to stave off the illness.
She's staying out of the sun.
Poor asked us why she's staying where she is - why not the sunny area, why not where there's more food, etc. Sayid said Danielle's area is called the "Dark Territory" on her map - which may be because tree coverage is so thick. She also builds her shelters below ground, not in the trees.
Danielle figured out that the sun is causing, or is an essential factor in contracting the illness. She stays out of the sun,... in dense tree cover. That's also why the whisperers are probably living under ground.
We may start to see the folks who stayed on the beach coming down with the illness, while those who moved to the cave aren't as likely to contract it any time soon.
So, that's my theory - it's all in the sun. Perhaps it's how the sun's rays affect people, and animals, as it comes through the electromagnetic field that I believe is shielding... enveloping the island... like the dome we saw in the comic book.
Which brings me to the answer of why there are no birds.
Was IMing with anni this morning - brainstorming... thoughts flowing... and we were pondering - why no birds.
Well, if the energy field is strong enough to pull a plane or ship apart as they force their way through the field... with great speed and force... then what would happen to a mere bird that tried to fly through such a field... an invisible field... it would probably smack right into it and die... sort of like...
A BIRD FLYING INTO A WINDOW!!
THAT was a CLUE! We were all thinking about that scene the wrong way!! We were so distracted by Brian's reaction to Walt, and the bird book, and the idea that Walt made it happen, that we missed the CLUE!! THAT'S what that was all about!! We were too busy looking at the waving right hand - that we totally missed what the left hand was doing!
So, birds trying to fly toward the island - smack into the energy field and die. Birds trying to fly away from the island, same thing. Thus, no birds that we can see - though we can hear some once in a while, can't we? Maybe birds that have learned not to fly around too much.
But what drew that bird to fly into the window, you may ask? Well, birds fly into windows ALL the time! It was a coincidence. The scene wasn't about why the bird flew in. That scene was a clue to what is happening on the island. A barrier you can't see... that birds can't fly through.

She is doing well. Family and friends are finally arriving as surgery came on suddenly. No one is allowed in at moment, but surgeons are feeling confident that it went very well. This morning she asked that I post things for cac and her mates in that thread and to put up more story, but it may be later. I wish to get back at moment. Dreadfully sorry to post and run, but we are waiting out the infection period. cac, I will post here to take less time. If someone could post it in cac's thread that would be smashing.
"By now, you have of course realized that 'A = ' in the equation stands for an Ampere, and leads you to Ampere's Law and Relativity. Now try to connect the dots on what Danielle has been spending her 16 years on. Don't get frustrated, it's all leading somewhere! Have fun!"
Thanks much in advance. I will try to get back at a decent hour to post her next story.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I read a few pages of that thread this morning. I think it's a good point that Danielle said "us", and this after she had killed all her team because they were sick - or that's what it seemed she said. But "us" implies she wasn't not alone - and that Alex was indeed with her then. OR, it could mean that she feels strongly that Alex is with her somewhere on the island still, even if she doesn't know where she is.
Good thoughts. Didn't read the whole thread, so maybe I missed more.
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Si qui que ce soit puisse entendre ceci, ils sont morts, je vais essayer d'aller jusqu'au rocher noir, veuillez nous aider If anybody can hear this, they are dead, I'll try to go to the Black Rock, Please help us.
I don't think it implies that Alex was with her; only that she's asking for someone to help them both.
"He's outside" probably refers to Alex being outside the island, having left through the tesseract. Brandon has the keys to the tesseract, preventing Danielle from following Alex.
I think she's asking Alex to go to the Black Rock; that she'll meet him there.
What I don't understand is why she says "I'll try to go to the Black Rock." If the transmitter is near the Black Rock, wouldn't she be there already when she is recording this message?
Did she record it and then take the recording to the transmitter?
Is there some sort of 'booth' connected to the transmitter where the transmissions are monitored and sent from? Maybe at each end of the cable?
Was there something, or someone, between the transmitter and the Black Rock that prevented her passage?
IMing with ME, I realized that Fed and I didn't do such a great job summarizing the infamous disappearing thread. In now invisible ink, we were told that the numbers and formula led to Einstein's Theory of Relativity which led to the Tesseract, like in Wrinkle in Time. Once we had tesseract, we were asked "Ou est Alex?" The answer is that Alex went into a tesseract and Danielle has been trying to get him back for 16 years. She didn't just kill her team because of the illness. When Danielle asked Sayid, "What would have happened if we were rescued? I couldn't let that happen. I won't!" she wasn't talking about spreading the illness to the outside world (it's not contageous; she didn't get it). She was saying that if they were rescued, in the past or the present, she'd never get Alex back.
I'll have to do some more reading before I understand the science part, but this morning's clue must be that Danielle has been trying to build another tesseract so that she can go get Alex.
Also in Solitary, Danielle tells Sayid she likes having him around to talk to and then declines his invitation to join his group. Why is that? Does this have to do with her work being too important, time consuming and secret?
What happened to Brandon? Is he the leader of the Others? Is he the one who is still controling the tesseract? Why does he have the same name as a Canadian town? Was he Ethan? Is the key buried with him?

From Plato and A (moved over from the "purple update thread):
Haven't been able to post story as she wished, but here is what she wanted cac to have for today. Will do it here to save time. Will return with more information later.
Pilot
So it would seem whoever attacked you has a reason for not wanting to get off the

island. Maybe someone who is profiting from our current circumstances? And from what I've seen you and Mr. Sawyer share a certain animosity."
Raised by Another
"You know what's happening."
"He was your responsibility but you gave him away, Claire. Everyone pays the price now."
"Yep. You already know my name. I lived most of my life in Tustin, CA."
"I was looking for something."
"No. It found me. Anything else?" All the Best Cowboys
"Ludovico Buonarrati, Michelangelo's father. He was a wealthy man. He had no understanding of the divinity in his son so he beat him. No child of his was going to use his hands for a living. So, Michelangelo learned not to use his hands.

She feels that you may find some information there.

It's nice to see you here again. If you'd like to move some of your more insightful posts over here, that would be good. Or if you'd like to post a summary of your ideas. Mostly I think we need to get the discussion going again. A has given us lots of material, so lets get started.

Mesopotamia was the cradle of civilization. It's where the Biblical Adam & Eve would have lived. What we are seeing is the formation of a new civilization on the island.
Bones are a natural material that has always been plentiful. It can be used to make tools but dice aren't a necessity, so they indicate a civilization with leisure time. It might indicate that they will make use of what they find on the island.
Foreshadowing of Sides (The Greater Good). One is good, one is bad. We now know that the Others inhabit the world of light and the Whisperers are in the dark, so our perception of good and bad might be backwards. JJ (?) said the same thing about our perceptions of the characters in an article.
What was the secret?
Locke already knew Walt was special at this point, or at the very least he'd have figured it out while they played. Did he tell him something about his specialness? About the island? About himself?

OK cac, I guess for now I'll just jump into new discussion. I'll go back and try to summarize some of my earlier stuff later this afternoon...
Foreshadowing of Sides (The Greater Good). One is good, one is bad. We now know that the Others inhabit the world of light and the Whisperers are in the dark, so our perception of good and bad might be backwards. JJ (?) said the same thing about our perceptions of the characters in an article.
This reminds me of Claire's dream, which we were told was actually a vision quest with mythological symbols. The blood Claire found in the cradle was actually a sign of strength and triumph, not tragedy or death. The way we traditionally view light/dark, good/evil, black/white may be skewing our views on the island, like you said...
Especially with our initial perceptions of the survivors. It's why I've always been a supporter/defender of Jin. I just sensed that he was being presented in one light, while his true nature was very different. Maybe we should re-evaluate everything we take for granted about these characters and look at them with new eyes. I'm dying to see how the semmingly very eventful next few episodes affect our opinions of the castaways...
What was the secret?
Locke already knew Walt was special at this point, or at the very least he'd have figured it out while they played. Did he tell him something about his specialness? About the island? About himself?
Since Locke immediately became aware of the fact that something was miraculous/mysterious about the island, (since he awoke with the ability to walk) he has had a different perspective since before he ever "looked into the eye". Whatever secret he told Walt must've had to do with his former "condition". Or do you think it had to do with the island specifically, not himself?

Thank you guys for looking at my thread, the French Transmission one, I'm just having fun with my thoughts on this, I enjoy discussing Lost, it gets my mind thinking.
I added a little something to it this morning, my mind was running rampant last night!...LOL It's way out there, but just maybe I have touched on something and you guys can elaborate, or take it a little further?
furphyRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
A says good on you for starting discussion again and what to remember that things on the island are not always what they seem to be even when they are exactly what they seem to be.

We're discussing because we know it's what she wants. Really we're just worried about her. Tell her we want her to concentrate on recovering from the surgery. We love her and want her back here as soon as she's ready.

I posted some things I noticed last night, replied within the episode thread and now can't find the post. I'll try again.
Pool-*re: One's supposition that the crater may now contain a lake with the antenna under it and someone else's moon making you crazy/affecting the tides theory ;0)
Was the pool that Kate/Sawyer dove into inside the crater? Did their entering the pool combined with the full moon cause the tides to rise up higher than normal?
Jack identified with Kate's pain at the end, over the plane because he also feels guilty about his dad's death and blames himself. Could he also be envious since he doesn't have any memento's to remember his father by?
Sun's plant to cure headaches foreshadows Sawyer getting them. Is this also a foreshadow of Jack's death? Setting Sun up in the healer's role?
Think that was it.
The particular re-runs they are choosing to show seem to directly relate to the next new episode. Think we need to study these very carefully. Watch that left hand waving in the re-runs.

Sorry that this took so long. I had to read it and then wait for the answer. A says to tell you that you are near one of the biggest of the season subplots. She says to tell you thank you for your prayer and best wishes, and that she thinks you all are brilliant. Thanks for the great read. You have made her smile.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Thanks so much for relaying our posts to A for us, and for relaying her thoughts TO us! Makes us all smile to know that we're making her smile.
Is it the crater that she's referring to - that we're getting close to? I've studied the maps carefully (lord, i need to get a life! LOL!), and posted the other day that I believe the crater could be the location of the Black Rock.... and that the antennea is either under the crater, or just off shore, buried under the ocean floor.
The crater looks like it's a volcano crater.
So, that would be a clue via maps. As far as camera shots go... I was looking carefully at the screenshots of the golf course recently http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=77&pos=488 - from the "Solitary" episode... and to me, it sure does look to me that Hurley built that golf course right smack dab in the middle of a crater... that's grown over with grass!!
Whether the crater was created by volcano, or meteor, wouldn't there be radiation of some sort emitting from it?
I also speculated recently in a post that Danielle has figured out how to stave off the "illness" by staying out of the sun - and THAT is why she has chosen to live where she is on the island, in the "Dark Territory", and underground. I feel that Danielle has figured out that sun exposure is an essential factor in contracting the illness.
Would love you to relay this info to our friend and see see how she responds.
Oh, also... as far as how Ethan are getting around so fast - could there have been mining on the island? And they get around via mining tunnels?
I already believe the whisperers are living underground - to stay out of the sun, i think... and perhaps for protection from the others.

Back to these key(s)...a key is not just a physical object that opens a lock or door.
A key in music is a tone or pitch and can also relate to frequencies. They need the correct frequency to open/close the tesseract don't they? They would also need the correct frequency or another one to change the message transmission. (Dad mentioned something about morse code key's when I asked him how you could change the transmission.)
A key can also be a person, the main player, the grandpoohbah, the missing puzzle piece, the one with all the answers.
A key is found on a map. Coordinates + Frequencies = We get our butts off this island.
Hmmm...nothing is as it seems. God! I love this show!

"What I know is that this island might just give you what you're looking for, but you have to give the island something."
WHAT DID LOCKE GIVE TO THE ISLAND? He got the biggest miracle of them all, the ability to walk again. What did he give in return? Or, does he believe, because of what the island gave to him, he owes the island. And how much, in Locke's mind, is the ability to walk again worth? How far will he go, to repay the island?

slpyRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Yes pysk I agree. It's about balance. He owes everything to the island. I think he would do anything for the island. To keep it going. You have to give to take, and he is not about to stop taking.

Maybe Locke has given ALL the castaways to the island - and that's one reason he can't let anyone leave.
In the Moth, Locke says to Sayid: "So it would seem whoever attacked you has a reason for not wanting to get off the island. Maybe someone who is profiting from our current circumstances."
Locke is is certainly profitting from their circumstances, it would seem. Or maybe Locke just fears that he wouldn't be able to stay if a way was found off the island... even though i'm not sure why he couldn't stay if he wanted to, even if everyone else wanted to leave. Maybe his sacrifice is that he has to stay on the island in order to be able to walk, etc.... like Shangri La in the book "Lost Horizon". Or maybe he had to let himself be contaminated by something in order to walk... and he doesn't want anyone else to know about this because generally contamination does imply a very good thing by most people's standards.

ME, the only thing that doesn't jive with the Ethan/tunnel theory is the camera shot remark. We've had no camera shots from underground. A couple from ground level but not from under. We've had lots of camera shots from above though. They were showing a lot of those pesky vines in last nights episodes too and that tree/vine/thingy that Sawyer was standing on when he tossed the case. I think the others are swinging through the trees or they have a series of catwalks built up there in the canopy. You wouldn't necessarily see them cause they'd blend in. Everyone keeps getting snatched up too.

I don't know what the secret was. It was probably in the form of an allegorical story, maybe about himself. It probably had more meaning, though, which could be generalized to the island.
Do you think Locke is good or bad? At first I thought he was bad, then I was convinced he was good and now I'm drifting back to bad. It seemed that everything he has done was to help people, but has he really just been getting them on his Side? As pysk said, what has he given the island? Is he giving it the people by keeping them there?
ME: Or maybe Locke just fears that he wouldn't be able to stay if a way was found off the island... even though i'm not sure why he couldn't stay if he wanted to, even if everyone else wanted to leave.
That's the same fear that Danielle expressed to Sayid. I think this has something to do with A questioning why no one has ever left.
Kate's statement to Shannon last week about Locke being the one person Boone is safe with has me thinking that it's foreshadowing Boone's death. We already know Locke is responsible, but we don't know if it's direct responsibility or just that of circumstances.
One, I thought about Sawyer when Sun showed the headache cure. I think she's going to deliver Claire's baby. They don't really need two doctors, does it? On the island, Sun's medicine is more useful than Jack's.
Another thing I picked up on last night was Sayid's warning about the sun being stronger than what Shannon is used to. If the sunlight contributes to the illness, which we're pretty sure about, then Shannon is either more likely to get sick because she's been sitting in it so much, or she's less likely because she has built up an immunity to it with a lifetime of tanning.
I still think Ethan was associated with the treetops, through the camera angles, and that's how he and the Others move around. It makes sense with them getting more sun exposure too. I don't think they're using the tunnels because I don't think they can get into them. That's the domain of the Whisperers, who may not be able to get out.
Now, how do we connect this to the maps? Is the Dangerous River the source of the illness? The x on the map? The Dark Territory might be literally dark, so safe from the sun.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
They don't really need two doctors, does it? On the island, Sun's medicine is more useful than Jack's.
Where does this leave Jack? He's very conflicted about his role as the leader/healer/protector already. He hates feeling tied to that identity. What will happen to him if it becomes clear he's not really needed in that role?
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
ME, the only thing that doesn't jive with the Ethan/tunnel theory is the camera shot remark. We've had no camera shots from underground.
Hi One. I didn't think that the camera shot remark was necessarily referring to how they're getting around, but by another subplot of the show... but i may have misread.
I do agree that there have been more angle shots directed up... when Jack was on the ground looking up at Ethan... Kate up in a tree picking fruit... Sawyer up in the tree dropping the case... Kate climping up to cut down Charlie....
It hadn't been in the forefront of my mind that Ethan and his crew would be the one's traveling underground. Also wouldn't make sense if the whisperers are underground. I always thought the traveling through tree idea made much more sense. That's been talked about though quite a bit.
Also, I think A. mentioned at one point that we'd see reference to Swiss Family Robinson, which would fit.. and would also answer why we don't see any buildings... Danielle builds her shelters below ground, Ethan's group could be up in the trees. If sun is a factor in contracting the illness, then that might account for Ethan being so agressive... if that is a characteristic of the illness.
Locke: "And having choices, making decisions on more than instinct is the only thing that separates you, from him (the boar)."
Maybe this is how the illness manifests... and why Ethan is the way he is. All that separates him from an animal is stripped away - and he only reacts out of instinct.
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
How about a combination of water/sun? Is the danged antenna hydro/solar powered? Absolutely agree they don't need two Drs. and Sun is better equipped. Jack doesn't seem to know too much about natural medicine. Also think she will deliver baby.
If the golf course is in the crater has Hurley accidentally stuck the hole flag into the antenna? LOL It could happen. :0p
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
When we talked about it before, I just thought of it as a harbinger of death, but I don't think I said anything here about how it might have got there.
In Lord of the Flies, the impaled sow's head was an offering to the beast from the savage group.
Since it's hanging, it's associated with the Others, who are the savage group on the island. If it is given as an offering to the monster, this shows that they are more superstitious than Danielle, who says there's no such thing as monsters. This takes us back to civilization vs. savagery and the creation of a new society.
Where does this leave Jack? He's very conflicted about his role as the leader/healer/protector already. He hates feeling tied to that identity. What will happen to him if it becomes clear he's not really needed in that role?
Knowing too much for his own good? Getting the message from Sawyer? Leaving a pretty corpse?
One, I was trying to think of how the golf course might relate to the antenna, before replying to that part, but I think you have it.
cac, this is exactly what i said in my post that you're referencing! LOL!
One, I thought about Sawyer when Sun showed the headache cure.
I thought about that too last night. Maybe it's not going to be about needing two doctors or not, but having an alternative. We've heard that Jack tries to decide whether to help Sawyer or not with his headaches. Well, maybe Sun ends up helping Sawyer instead.
This might ultimiately end up defusing some of Jack's status - even though he never wanted to be island doctor and leader in the first place. Maybe he'll kind of miss it a bit once he's not the only sole healer... perhaps another case of be careful what you wish for. Though, right now he seems very pleased with Sun's knowledge of herbal medicines... and interested.
The Dark Territory might be literally dark, so safe from the sun.
yes, cac... i agree. that's what i was saying when i posted the sun theory the other day... and I think i posted in that other post today - as far as why Danielle is staying in that one area, rather than where it's sunnier or has more food.
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
If there's a barrier of sorts around the island and it's bubble shaped, the sun shining on it would be deflected. If the sun is shining through the barrier, it would be intensified. If intensified they are basically inside a microwave and being cooked.
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Good Lord! Is Locke looking for the "chair"? The psychic person needed to direct the energy of the antenna? Is that his sacrifice? He's leading them along because he needs to know who's got the power b-a-b-y.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
One, I was trying to think of how the golf course might relate to the antenna, before replying to that part, but I think you have it.
cac, i think one was responding to the theory I posted saying that I think the antennea is under the crater... and then I posted that I think that Hurley has built the golf course in the crater.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2

I know Lord of the Flies has been dismissed as only marginally relative to the show as a whole, but this hanging boar imagery was so blatant. I think you said it well.
Danielle says there's no such thing as monsters, but does that just mean the beast is inside us all? SOMETHING freaky deaky is going on there, so from whom/where does it stem? There's no such thing as monsters, meaning there's an explanation for everything?
SonglineRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I've been reading what you guys have been working on, it's great stuff. Here's what I have been thinking about...
In Walkabout, Locke says
Not that you would understand, but a Walkabout is a journey of spiritual renewal, where one derives strength from the earth. And becomes inseparable from it. I have vacation days, I'm going, Randy. I've already made a reservation."
Is that what he has done? Derived strength from the earth, and become inseparable from it?
I don't understand why Locke tells Claire in Raised by another that she gave the baby away. She didn't do it. He must be talking about something else. (left hand???)
In All the Best cowboys, Locke tells Walt to picture the knot in his mind's eye. Is that a gift Locke has? Is it a developed gift, a natural gift, or a gift from the island?
The Michelangelo thing: M didn't use his hands for THREE YEARS, he stared. Perfecting his mind's eye???
One of you mentioned the hanging boar in Numbers... so do you think the boar WAS an offering? Was the polar bear that Sawyer shot also one? Where did it go?
I also spent some time last night trying to find where the comic book was online. I found a lot of sites with part of it, but none with all. If anyone has that link, please post it.
I wonder how important the book is? I remember there was a wishing ring in it, that green lantern used to "think" things into existence. I also remember the plot was that 50 years ago, the govt had green lantern attack an alien, who he later learned was peaceful. The alien was locked up the last 50 years, has developed a horrible, deadly disease, and now wants out. Is it important? How?
End of page 7MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
mrsbuns, we were told to "look up", but our friend let us know the other day that we had figured out that clue... it was to get us to think of constellations, and was leading us to "Orion"... to get us to the name of the antennea. So, that clue is off the table now.
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
cac, this is exactly what i said in my post that you're referencing! LOL!
I know. I was having trouble keeping up with all the posts and forgot to take that out. We were probably thinking it at the same time. LOL
It also thought you probably mentioned the Dark Territory. Sorry for not crediting you, but there's been so much said, I can't always remember who said what. Including myself.
About the crater and golf course, I meant that I was trying to think of why it would be a golf course. The flag looks like a mini antenna, a hint in itself.
Look up might be in reference to more than one thing. The sun, the trees, the moon, the stars ...
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2

It also thought you probably mentioned the Dark Territory. Sorry for not crediting you, but there's been so much said, I can't always remember who said what. Including myself.
You know what they say about great minds! LOL! Sorry for all the clarifying - I didn't to sound picky. I think it only struck me because I had JUST posted it all again - and you had even referred to that post... so it struck me as funny! I think we all do get on the same thought wave a lot though - at least much of the time! Not that we don't ever disagree - but that's part of the fun!

Could this be a reference to fate as well? That Locke knows he's going on a walkabout one way or another?
I think Locke has developed his mind's eye because he's always been an observer. He's trying to get Walt to understand the connection between his mind's eye and things happening.
I don't think the polar bear was an offering. I think it's left over from an experiment, either from the original purpose of the island or from Danielle's ship. I'm pretty sure it died where Sawyer shot it.
How?
Sounds even more like Lost than I thought. The alien sounds like the whisperers.
SonglineRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
cac.. I meant, where did the polar bear go? No one was shown eating it, burying it, moving it... That's what I meant by offering
I also remembered something else from the comic book... that strange picture of part of the earth covered by a clear dome or field of some sort, with a huge, multi pointed black rock sticking out the top. I wish I could find the website where I saw the whole book.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
About the crater and golf course, I meant that I was trying to think of why it would be a golf course. The flag looks like a mini antenna, a hint in itself.
True. I never thought to question why a golf course - just figured they were thinking of what could take place in a large grassy, bare area. Didn't one of the characters even comment about how odd it seemed that no trees grew there in that area? I agree though that the fold flag looks sort of like a mini-antenna. True.
I think it was another case of right hand/left hand. It wasn't about golfing or entertainment (well, on the surface, simple storyline it is, and significant in a sense for that reason), but about where they were at.
SonglineRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I just thought of something else related to Locke talking about deriving strength from the earth and becoming inseparable from it - when he gave Sayid the compass, didn't he say he didn't need it anymore?
... and he knows almost exactly when it's going to rain.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
mrsbuns, we were told to "look up", but our friend let us know the other day that we had figured out that clue... it was to get us to think of constellations, and was leading us to "Orion"... to get us to the name of the antennea. So, that clue is off the table now.
Gotcha, thanks!
Songline, excellent poitn about the compass...
And as far as the reservation/walkabout being his destiny...
He tells Hurley, when he asks if he found what he was looking for, "No. It found me." Locke definitely believes the island has become his destiny.
SonglineRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
This just occurred to me: Awhile back we were looking for things Sawyer was doing that no one else was, since Poor told us to look at that relating to the headaches. Have we investigated the antibiotic angle? I know he said Jack was giving them to him, but is anyone else taking them? Or Sawyer only?
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
That's true, mrsbuns! I can't remember for sure, but I thought she said it was something only Sawyer was doing. We know Kate was swimming, too, in that pool by the waterfall, and several others have been in the ocean.
I don't know... anybody else have any ideas?

I have so many questions, and so few answers. It would be so nice to know what we've got that's correct, and where it's a wild goose chase. Although, that might take some of the fun out of it.

Sounds even more like Lost than I thought. The alien sounds like the whisperers.
cac, i absolutely agree! this storyline from the comic book is one reason I've always felt the whisperers were perhaps deformed and living underground... because they were afraid of being misunderstood and perceived as being "bad" because of how they look, even though they're good.
However, now I also feel they live underground to keep away from the sun. I don't feel they are imprisoned there or can't get out - I actually think they DO get out and come above ground at night, and very sparingly... and well hidden.
song, after poor posed that question about what Sawyer has been doing that no one else has, i think someone did mention the antibiotics. I was trying to pay attention to the name of it last night when Jack said it - the antibiotics... to look it up. A lot of antibiotics make you more sensitive to the sun.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
A lot of antibiotics make you more sensitive to the sun.
Good point...
Also, the whole "don't want to be percieved as bad when actually they're good thing...In AWIT, the creature known as Aunt Beast is initially repulsive to Meg visually, then she comes to understand her healing nature. Just a thought.
End of page 8
SonglineRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Ok, good, the antibiotics came up already, I must have missed that. It could have something to do with Sawyer's irritability and headaches, related to the island. Back to the comic book, the clear dome picture had lots of electrical energy of some sort flying around, not quite lightning but similar.
I know I'm just throwing strange ideas out, but my mind is so full of questions it's just spinning.
I'm starting to think Bernard, Rose's husband, is really important. We haven't seen him on the plane, or at all, but we know things about him. I think he is the only character mentioned but never seen at all. Why did he tell Rose, planes WANT to fly? I've never heard anyone say that before. As if, the plane changed it's mind and stopped flying. Rose didn't say he was still alive in a crazy-person way, but with conviction and sincerity. She seems balanced and well-grounded, as in her conversation with Charlie.
Bernard is the only passenger we heard about but didn't see ever, at all. Where is he?

Things that make you say hmmmm, huh? The minute Rose first says to Jack, "They're probably thinking the same thing about us..." I got chills. He's obviously going to be important at some point...
Bernard is the only passenger we heard about but didn't see ever, at all. Where is he?
Like Alex. Heard of but not seen. Where are they?
Go_DadioRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Sawyer has been smoking. Aside from early in the diary, I haven't heard of anyone else trying to trade for cig's or seen anyone else smoking.
Also, not something he has been doing, but something he did. He realized he had a connection to someone on the island. I think he is the first person to do that.

Oh, good catch! I forgot about Alex! I wonder if Bernard and Alex (who I think is a girl) will become characters at some point?
Godadio - great point about the smoking and the connection.
That's three things about Sawyer that are different. Plus, he's in the sun a lot. I still the think the theory that Danielle didn't get the disease because she stays out of the sun is a good one.

Two very good points! Sawyer IS the only smoker...and the only one who has realized a previous connection to someone...Ooooh, I'm getting that tingly feeling again!
daviscblsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
No one has mentioned, or I don't think anyone has mentioned, that when Boone is in the police station reporting about his sister, Sawyer is seen in the background. Did anyone else see that?
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Great find, One. I can't read the words, but I'm sure someone will figure them out. Thanks for the comic book shot, too. It almost looks more like a city on the dome than a black rock, doesn't it?
Be back tonight... thanks for the fun and not yelling at me guys!
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Why did he tell Rose, planes WANT to fly? I've never heard anyone say that before. As if, the plane changed it's mind and stopped flying.
That supports my theory that the plane was pulled apart because it faught whatever force was pulling it down. That's why it broke apart in the air instead of upon impact with the beach. Further to that, I said that they made it safely to the ground because something transported them there. Something like a tesseract.
The imprints on the diary page is backwards writing. Most of Leonardo da Vinci's writing was done backwards so that no one else could read it, btw. Get a mirror to look at it. I can make out "I took" after safe. but I can't make out what's under the ink. The next line says "Charlie today and felt so"
The wavy line with the circles -- that's the one I keep telling you about. Our latest theory is that it represents the Others in the trees, the castaways on the ground and the Whisperers underground.
One, it's in a crater.
It also looks like there's a piece of an aqueduct at the bottom. Or else Locke's building another cradle. The cradle of civiliation, perhaps.

Hi, y'all! I've been a lurker around this thread. Mainly because I only get one day a week on the net, and by the time I think of something important to say at the end of the week, you all have already discussed it 20 pages back! This new layout looks great, cac! All this information is all nice and neat. I just have a few observations and questions to post here, if you don't mind me butting in!
In Hearts and Minds, Locke tells Sayid that he was in the boy scouts (or the Wimbles if you want to be exact). Now he must have been cared for even a little bit if he was given the opportunity to join a club. His foster parents must not have been too bad. But he also told Walt (I can't remember which episode) that his (Locke's) father was defiantly not cool. That means his father was alive during Locke's growing years. So Locke wasn't born an orphan. Maybe Locke's mother died after a while and Locke's father was a drunk or something, so the state intervened. And he also told Sayid that he wasn't the most popular kid. I wonder if it was his habit even then to tie up his friends, slap hallucinogenic goop on their head, and leave them for the monsters?! LOL!!
Can you tell me why some people post the word "emp"? I have seen that many times around here, not to mention heard several people complain about disappearing posts. Is there a bug in the system?
Sawyer made many references to books and movies during his sarcastic moments (come to think of it, I've yet to hear him be unsarcastic!), but the one y'all seemed to have forgotten is when he called Jack "Dr. Quinn" (as in the old CBS show, Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman). Not that I see any connection at all to LOST in Dr. Quinn, every other tidbit of comparisons has been annualized to death here, so why not add good ole Jane Seymore to the pot?
So which is it? "The Greater Good" or "Sides"? I've heard so many conflicting titles on episode 21 till I just want to wait the 6 awful weeks and see for myself.
Does anyone have a list a clues/questions that Adawen left us? If we had a list, instead of little snippets we find, and then cut and paste onto this thread, it might make LOST a little easier to watch and study. Sort of like a program guide of clues. And btw, which is she: "Ada", "Stranger", "Purple", or "our friend"? You guys talk so cryptically I can't tell if it's the same person you mean each time. If it's that secretive, email me at my go addy. I'm not a troll. Far from it actually. I would clean Ada's house with a tooth brush, top to bottom, for even a teeny-tiny clue right now.
Another thing. You on an island with all sorts of creature, normal and weird, but has anyone seen a snake, or shooed bats out of those caves? I'd be covering Sawyer with kisses for mosquito repellent. In fact, if I could get my hands on Josh Holloway right now...... lol! Anyone know where in Georgia he's from? I live in that great state, and if it's not too far from home, I might make a pilgrimage. Kinda like a mecca, only less sand and heat.
Why has no one gone back to salvage the front of the plane? I can understand not wanting to face the monster, but there's a lot of valuable stuff in there. That reminds me... what group of idiots had the bright idea to torch the fuselage? There was probably enough junk in there to start a thriving village. So there was dead bodies in there, who cares? They aren't gonna care if you torch their carcasses father down the island. There were seats, wire, you name it. Not to mention clothes. Okay, that may be a little gross, taking close of decomposing bodies, but what are the lostaways gonna wear a year from now when their cloths start running thin? Kate had the bright idea in taking those hiking shoes, as did Tom Hanks' character in his movie "Castaway". Nothing is wrong with salvaging in their situation. As long as the body you salvage from come with a bar of soap to wash the clothes with! On that note, anyone notice Jack's wearing that key around his neck? That key that was the marshall's? That was buried with the marshall under two feet of dirt, and one foot of maggots. Now that's when bleach is required for a good cleaning!
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Alix, I seem to remember them salvaging a LOT of stuff from the fuselage before torching it. The whole episode showed people with scarves over their faces, hauling stuff out before lighting it. Seemed like a pretty good idea to me, what else would they do with the maggots?
And with the amount of luggage on that plane, I'm sure they'll have clothes for some time. (Though the sooner we see those fellas running around in loincloths, the better, LOL)
Sorry, sidetracked...
End of page 9OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Alix, don't worry about bringing up old topics if we've moved on. Sometimes we just get sidetracked and sometimes we just don't come up with an answer. If you have something to say, go ahead. It might be a good idea to remind us what page we were discussing it on, however.
emp or a reference to George (the post eating monster) are what we post when we know someone else has posted but it hasn't appeared yet. Yes, it's a bug in the system and posting another one fixes it.
Sides was the original title, but it has been changed to The Greater Good. We don't know why it was changed, but

we are using both titles as clues to what it's about.
All the names you used refer to the same person. She has trolls looking for her, so we try to make it harder for them to find her. Did you see the list of Locke quotes she gave us this morning? I posted it a few pages back. I've been thinking about trying to collect some of her hints that we haven't solved and put them on one of the early pages in this thread. Haven't got to it yet, I'm afraid.
One of those quotes made me think that Locke was beaten by his dad. It was the Michelangelo one.
The lack of native wildlife could be because it's a man-made island. All species seem to be introduced.
I thought the same thing when the burned the bodies in the plane. Jack did say to get anything salvageable out first, though.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
A man-made island is one posibility. More likely it'a a natural island that was used in a now-abandoned military experiment and still suffering the after effects.
Neesy1967Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
So, if I'm understanding the tesseract theory correctly....Rose's husband (the back of the plane) is also on the island but in a different time. Right?
Could they be with Alex?
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
The tail section people might have tessered to another time, another dimension or just to a different part of the island. It's pretty big, you know.
I don't think they are with Alex. I think Alex has left the island. He may have gone to another dimension, but I think he was transported back to the real world and somehow ended up on the plane. I used to think he was Hurley, but have recently decided he's the pilot. I'll probably suspect someone else next week.
I got the links from ME, One. She has WAY more than me.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Boy, Danielle sure will be mad if Alex is not there somewhere! She seems pretty convinced he is!!
No, Danielle knows Alex went into a tesseract. It's on page 5 of this thread. First there's the hint, then the transcript then my interpretation and One correcting me.
Below that is the list of Locke quotes, posted by ME, but from A&P.
End of page 10
Ferrow27Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Hello, this is my first time posting, so I'm slightly nervous about it! I have been an observer on the boards for a while and am amazed by everyone who has shared their ideas. They're brilliant! Anyway, I was reading over the Diary entries that you listed and I think they give us some information. For instance the female writing them has said that she tans a lot and at one point Jack told her to stay out of the sun. I thought this may be a little foreshadowing. Also she has mentioned a few time where she has felt nauseous and ill. Maybe this is because of her exposure to the sun? I also like the idea about the location of the golf course being important. The diary writer says she has been running up to it almost every day and one time had an odd feeling someone was watching her, plus the whispers she thought she heard. Just some food for thought. I don't know if there are supposed to be clues in the diary or just a fun little read. But of what we know about he writers and creators of the show, everything is important. That's all I have for now. Like I said you guys/gals are brilliant and anything else I could possibly think of at this point has already been addressed.
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I have to admit I never read the diary bc I didn't think it was relevant, just for fun. But you're right, those references to sunbathing and nausea could be foreshadowing!
Glad to have new minds around here. Personally, mine's feeling a bit fried. Luckily my workday is almost done, so I'll recharge by tomorrow. Hope to see you around here again...
mrsbunsRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Thank you for the warm invite. I'm almost done with work as well and my brain is tired. Can't wait to go home and relax!! I started watching LOST late in the season so I thought the diary was part of the show when I was trying to catch up on information I missed. Who knows if it is. Only time will tell. Have a great night and I look forward to many more great discussions!!
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
We've been told that there are clues in the diary, so keep looking. I was wondering about the diary writer getting the illness because she said she's also a smoker.
The stuff about Louisiana is supposed to be important, too. And the water. I see a lot of foreshadowing of danger in it.
sdogTSOLRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
WOW! Cac-Thanks! For organizing all this info--very helpful. Great job! Has anyone mentioned "White Rabbit" is also the name of a song by Jefferson Airplane?
cac120Re: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Locke is awed by the island. He's saying it's like Wonderland, where nothing follows the rules as we know them and that they are there to learn something. He's telling Jack to go along for the ride and take from it what he can.
Is Locke the actual leader? Does he know where he's going and is manipulating all of them to go along?
sdogTSOLRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Steph, would you be able to post some of them here? Maybe a page every day for the next three weeks? They might help us see some of the things we've forgotten about.
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
I always thought White Rabbit was about taking drugs which is why I always associated it with the book Go Ask Alice which is also one of the lyrics. Oh well, see the reference to AIWL. heh, maybe it was because I was taking drugs at the time. ;0)
Can't figure out the maps. ME is much better at the maps I think.
sdogTSOLRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Yes, it's about drugs, but it's about more than that.
They say to go ask Alice, because in Wonderland she ate and drank things that made her bigger and smaller. The rabbit, catepillar, Chessmen, White Knight, Red Queen and doormouse are characters she meets there. She initially followed the rabbit down it's hole to get to Wonderland.
I'm not familiar with the book, "Go Ask Alice," but I would assume it was written after the song.
"White Rabbit" is a 1960's psychedelic pop classic originally done by Jefferson Airplane. Commonly known as, "Go Ask Alice", the song's lyrics drew heavily from Lewis Carroll's stories of "Alice in Wonderland."
Grace Slick wrote and sang these lyrics to illustrate her view that much of children's literature, encourages us to seek out altered states of consciousness. Yet as adults we are discouraged from such a pursuit, especially if it includes the aid of mind altering hallucinogenic substances.
One pill makes you larger And one pill makes you small, And the ones that mother gives you Don't do anything at all. Go ask Alice When she's ten feet tall. And if you go chasing rabbits And you know you're going to fall, Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar Has given you the call. Call Alice When she was just small. When the men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to go And you've just had some kind of mushroom And your mind is moving low. Go ask Alice I think she'll know. When logic and proportion Have fallen sloppy dead, And the White Knight is talking backwards And the Red Queen's "off with her head!" Remember what the dormouse said: "Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"
The book Go Ask Alice was about a young woman addicted to drugs--heroin If I remember acurately Other drug connections: Jack threatens to cut off Sawyers drugs Locke drugged Boone Searching for drugs in the begining for the marshall I think your spot on with the titles but I also think many of them refer to someone other than who is having flashbacks in that episode. Not everyone else just one other player.
stephbearRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Hello again everyone! Thanks tons for posting the Locke dialouge Cac!
You are all amazing! So glad I found this thread... Just some thoughts from reading the new posts in PartII- by the way, it feels good to be able to express these thoughts without being torn to shreads!
I could swear that I read from one of the Tessla links that the fellow who wanted to destroy the project, 'sat in the chair and unleashed his 'Id', a beast from within the destroyed everthing, then disappeared to who knows where?' Perhaps the island is where the 'beast' went?
In 'OUTLAWS', Locke admits that when he was a kid, out of nowhere this Golden Retriever comes up the drive, walks into the house, sits in front of his step mom and looks her in the eyes... Connects with the woman, sleeps on the dead sisters bed, then after awhile, leaves as it had came? Very curious! This makes me think of reassessing Vincent? Although Locke refers to the dog in his childhood as a 'she'...
In 'Hearts and Minds', Locke delivers his Michelangelo analogy.
It sure does sound like Locke's father was the wealty man who had the 'no son of mine' attitude, who most likely didn't see the divinity in his own son (the secreat between Locke and Walt... 'I'm like you Walt, we have the same power'?) and beats or tortures Locke to the point it puts him in a chair?
So Locke, like Michelangelo, learned to use his 'mind' since he couldn't use his legs (M not using hands), honing his psycological side, his philosophical side, his thought processes (hence the drive to 'Walkabout').
That by sitting and studying the hatch in the jungle, he, like Michelangelo studying the marble, will release the being that is locked inside? Michelangelo's David was the image of a perfect male being, a work of art... both psychologically and physically. Could this be what Locke is on about himself? Regarding the other survivors?
In 'All the Best Cowboys'-
Locke admits he is a 'regional collection supervisor' at the box company. What exactly does that mean? We assume it to mean collecting payment from client X in region Z, because of non payment. Once I saw it in B&W it said something different to me...
More like- the guy who was supervising the collection of who knows in the region? Of people to put in this domed (as in convex) Island 'box' for an experiment... or experience?
He strikes me very strongly as a psycologist.
Sometimes I feel as if the 'survivors' have all agreed to have this experience in a closed environment of say, a virtual reality, to come to terms with their greatest fears, to 'start over, with new lives, so that they may live up to their potential?
God, I am gonna need a psycologist by the end of this season!!! LOL
Thanks for the outlet!
Osolost
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Wow - I go out to a meeting for a couple hours, and look at all the catching up I have to do! LOL! Four pages!
Also, not something he has been doing, but something he did. He realized he had a connection to someone on the island. I think he is the first person to do that.
Yes, Go_Dadio, SO true! I picked up on that right after Outlaws aired... when Poor posed to us the clue/question, "What happened in Outlaws that hadn't happened in any other episode?"
The one and only thing I could think of that hadn't happened in any other episode except for Outlaws is that one castaway (Sawyer) made a realization of his connection to another castaway (connection to Jack via his encounter with Jack's father).
I'm glad you reminded us all about it though! There are so many details, even with cac's great episode summaries, it's hard to remember it all!
Oh, and One... the comic book image turned... yes! The map! The crater! Is that what you're thinking?
Cac, did I give you those links to the maps Ada's students created? Lordie, I don't remember that. I might have though... as you said, it's easy to forget who said what and when, even myself! LOL
I just added them to our reference list of external links.

cac, would it be better to archive all of poor's clues in one of the blank holding posts you created on the first few pages of the thread? Then you could add it to the index? That would probably be better than having to keep reposting the same questions throughout the thread.

Yeah! ME is finally here to look at the maps! Do you have PSP or Photoshop ME? If so, we need transparent layers. I can't get the darned things to line up. Will keep trying.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Steph, just post them at the end and then we'll discuss.
sdog, there's also: the drug plane in the spoiler pictures a lot of medication on the plane Sun's homeopathic remedies cigarettes
Interestingly, Locke, who might have had the most need for medication, was using an electric machine to control his pain. We think that means he was an addict too.
Oso, I didn't post the dialog; ME did, but it really comes from A.
I think the problem with Locke's father was that he wanted Locke to follow him into the army, but that wasn't Locke's thing.
Regional collections supervisor might be a reference to all the observations Locke has collected.
I don't think they've agreed to take part in this. It doesn't explain the body count.
theworld, welcome to to board. Thanks for the links and the interesting observation about the maps, backgammon and magnets. I don't know how to play backgammon, but if you see any parallels between the game and the island, I'd love to hear them.
ME, I was thinking about puting the questions in those empty posts. Since there are 21 pages, I thought I'd edit to what we haven't solved.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Yes, world - I think the magnets idea is a good one too. I've been pondering the shape of the two plateaus like crazy... the just don't seem very natural to me. I think they look like conductors or transformers of some sort... and the fact that there are two... negative and postive... or each having a negative and positive end.
I also noticed that there's a runnig in or out of each end of the island... each forking so it flows into, or out of, each plateau. Are they using waterpower to generate an electromagnetic current?
Hey there, One! Yes, I'm back!! Yay!

cac, just as long as you know we've definitely solved them. I know sometimes some of us have had differing solutions to the same clue - which I guess means our answer at this point is theory, and doesn't mean we definitely solved the clue.
However, with things like "look up", poor confirmed that we got that one since we (One, to be specific), figured out the name of the Orion watchacallit antennea (sorry to be so scientific )... we can definitley not include.
Interestingly, Locke, who might have had the most need for medication, was using an electric machine to control his pain. We think that means he was an addict too.
That reminds me that I need to include the link to the electromedicine site - the company of the machine Locke was using.
When I first found that, which I think first came up way back in the Black Rock thread... I wondered if Locke was using an electromedicine pain control device, rather than drugs, because he's a recovering drug addict. I wondered if this is why Locke was able to empthaize with Charlie so much when he was talking to him about how painful detox would be, and how he knows a lot more about pain than you think... and how he didn't envy what Charlie was facing.
Unfortunately I think the producers really dropped the ball on Charlie's detox. They didn't really show ANYTHING that indicated a painful detox. Oh well! Maybe it all got edited out and let us take for granted that he went through a painful detox.

I was trying to get the edges and points on both the shield pic and one of the maps to line up to see if anything else jumped out at us. Just fooling around. Didn't notice the shield pic mirrored the maps until I rotated it to see it clearly.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
ME I was trying to use the maps A's class drew but it wasn't working. There was a really good screen shot of map Sayid had and I can't find it anywhere. :0(
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
One of the maps A's students drew (map 2, i believe) must be of the upside down/back view of the map, as all the landmarks are on the reverse side of where they should be.
This is the case with the case with the view of the map you see of the "Map 5" image on the Lost and Found map images (see external links post on Page 1 of this thread)... the BACK of the map is shown - the ink coming through the paper... so what you see is the map in revers.
In order to view the map correctly, you have to flip it horizontally.
I could swear I saw a shot of almost the full map that is the one on the top in that pic. It had a bit of detail. It's not on that map site and I checked several episodes of screen shots on lost media and couldn't find it. Maybe I imagined it.

I'd say that the Seat thread is consistent with my tesseract theory about the plane breaking up in the air and the individual pieces being transported to the island. It sounds like what determined life or death was whether or not the seatbelt held.
That makes me think that the underwater couple did drown and that Bernard is just on another part of the island.
OneisLostRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Okay, using the pic from the comic and one of A's maps, I've roughly lined up what looks like the crater (lower left side) on both. See anything interesting?
comments on the Go Ask Alice ref. AS a teen it was one of my fav books, I still own my copy. I was always into drugs as a youth and this book fasinated me. In fact my dd was named Alison from Alice( I don't tell her that though). I sunk heavily into drugs as a youth and young adult finally od'ing and ended up in the hos and got the help I needed to overcome it all. Even though that book is scary it is a part of my life. Why don't they climb the bloody mountain then? If it's in the middle they could see the whole island. I think all these maps are wrong. Something is missing because nothing matches up except that triangle.
MEandtheseaRe: Are Episode Titles Clues to Past Connections? -- Part 2
Anyway, I don't think you have anything to hand your head over - it's just as good a theory as many others out there, and you were simply trying somethin out.
Frankly, I think the comic book image looks like something in a crater, so to me, that perhaps is a connection. Beyond that, I couldn't see much until you lined them up. Could mean something, could be a coincidence... but I appreciate you giving it a whirl!! Very cool!
Oh, and I don't think the maps are necessarily "all wrong". Sayid said they are clearly not to scale. It looks like Danielle created several different maps from different perspectives - side view, and top view... and since neither is to scale, it make sense that some of the elements would be a bit off or different distance or size. Also, to get a top view - she's not looking down in a plane or using a photo, so she is having to speculate based on what she's found while exploring the island.
I doubt she would have had surveying instruments to determine exact measurments, and it probably took her a long time. This seems to indicate she's been ALL OVER the island, yes? Wow - that's a lot of island.
Anyway, I don't find it at all that the maps aren't to scale, or that two different maps might differ a bit as far as size goes. I'm actually very impressed with what she was able to accomplish!
