In the jungle:
Michael's left eye opens
?You listened to your old man when you were 10, right?'- Mike to Jack
?Yea, yea I listened. Maybe a little too well'- Jack's response
How old was Jack when he got into the fight defending Silverman? Jacks dad gives him a lecture about standing up for others. Was this line a reference to that moment?
Mike calls for Walt 3 times
*'He seems to hate it, doesn't he?'- Hurley
'What?'- Jack
'Being a dad'- Hurley's response
Flashback:
Mike is wearing a horizontally striped hat
If you look at the description of the products, the center one is ?carriers'. The one to the right is ?travel'. The rest of the ones to the left say, in order, car seats, high chairs, boosters.
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=172&pos=33The baby thing hanging has 4 zebras on it. There is a big brown bear and a spotted leopard in the crib. There is also a shot of a picture of a zebra's hind quarters in the back
Susan tells Mike the crib would cost 3 months rent to buy
Mikes dad was named Walt Dawson
Other full names: Michael Dawson, Susan Lloyd, Brian Porter, Walt Lloyd, Vincent
Back to the jungle:
The scene with Locke and Walt made me feel like it was a training session.
Locke, Boone, Walt and Vincent are present. Locke keeps taking Walt under his wing.
Walt is wearing a horizontally striped shirt
Boone's shirt has 4 aces on it, 4 or 44. Another shirt Boone wore had a symbol on it that is said to be the number 44.
?See this knot, Walt? I want you to aim for it, right here. Focus on it, alright? Picture it in your mind's eye. You know what that is, right? The mind's eye?'- Locke
?Like a picture in your head or som. . .'- Walt
?That's right. Now do it again. But see it. See it before you do it. Visualize the path. See it. See it.'- Locke
Locke touches Walt as he says this
Right before Walt ?focus's', Vincent looks to the right (his left), sniffs and whimpers. Mike comes in from the left (Vincent's right). Did Vincent sense something once Walt started to concentrate?
?It was weird. I actually saw it, n my mind or something. Like it was real.'- Walt
?Who's to say it wasn't?'- Locke
Confrontation between Mike and Locke:
?Walt knows his own mind'- Locke to Mike
After being attacked by Boone, ?What are you his attack dog?'- Mike
Boone got punched by Mike on the left side. Same side Australian guy hit him when he went to get Shannon.
?He's been through more than most people in their entire lifetime. Maybe you haven't spent enough time with him to see it, but he's different'- Locke
Locke definitely knows Walt has some special type of ability. How is he able to detect this?
Flashback:
Mike tells Sue how she at one time wanted to live on a boat. Raft foreshadowing?
There is a picture of a male lion on baby Walt's overalls.
Susan says she got a job offer in Amsterdam. She wants to do international law
Back to the jungle:
Sun approaches Mike and asks how he is. He tells her in so many words he doesn't really know how to bond with Walt
Sayid, Jack, and Shannon are looking at the maps
First shot is the camera focusing on the first map. There are 3 islands of rock, one inside the triangle and one above and another to the left. As page 2 is overlapped, the island on the left seems to disappear and the one in front appears much further away. After the third one is overlapped I noticed the rock island formally missing on the left now seems to be back and the perspective is different. Now we are looking at it not from directly above but rather from an angle. In the distance is a much larger island with vegetation. Triangle around the middle island points towards larger, vegetated island.
Degrees of triangle: 36 degrees left side, 38 degrees on top, and 41 on the right side. The degrees stay the same during map overlays.
Mike first mentions making a raft to get him and Walt off the island
As Walt reads the comic book, the only words he says are ?Conardo sepe que machio une oso polar?. Can anyone help with the translation?
Mike tries to use the art angle to bond with Walt but gets nowhere. He gets frustrated and takes the comic away from Walt
?You know, when I was your age, I don't know, maybe a little older I used to trace comic books. I taught myself about perspective, you know what that is? Perspective?'- Mike
Flashback:
Mike is talking on a payphone. Does this indicate he has very little money?
Walt is 24 months old at the time of the call
Mike finds out about Susan and Brian's relationship for the first time
Susan is still in Amsterdam
As Mike hangs up the phone, he walks out in the street and a car hits Mike on his right side
Back to the beach:
Charlie is looking for Claire's diary
Kate is responsible for bringing Claire's things to the beach
In the jungle, Walt and Mike are separating parts for the raft
Walt asks if he is being punished
?What? You think working with your old man is punishment? No, man, this us taking control of our destiny'- Mike
Back to the beach:
Charlie and Kate approach Sawyer about the whereabouts of Claire's diary
?Maybe missy Claire don't want you reading it'- Sawyer. Is ?missy Claire' a pun on ?Miss éclair'?
http://fooddownunder.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=eclairCharlie gets irritated by Sawyer and punches him in his bad arm forcing Sawyer to drop the diary
Sawyer retaliates by punching Charlie with a left
?You hit like a ponce'- Charlie
Definition of ponce: ?someone who procures customers for wh*res (in England they call a pimp a ponce)'
Kate breaks up another potential fight
Cut to jungle:
Now here is something I found really interesting, Walt is standing looking out at the jungle while Mike works behind him. He looks bored. Looking around, kind of zoning out. It's then he sees Locke and Boone walk out of the jungle, Locke walking a few feet in front of Boone:
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=172&pos=276Walt then looks back at Mike. Mike doesn't notice anything. When Walt turns around a couple of second later, Boone is now in front of Locke by a few feet:
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=172&pos=277The whole sequence only takes a few seconds. It doesn't seem like there is enough time for Boone to overtake Locke in that time.
As Boone and Locke walk into camp Boone is still ahead of Locke. Did Walt imagine the first part with Locke in front? Was this the island at work?
Walt follows them telling his dad he is going to get water
?Shannon, you've been a functioning bulimic since junior high. I thought you'd be excited about dropping a size or two'- Boone
Shannon asks Boone for help building the raft. The answer is no.
As Walt approaches Locke, Locke tells him they can't spend time together.
Mike sees the interaction and yells towards Locke
?Damn it! What is wrong with you?'- Mike to Locke
When approached by Mike, Locke plays the pacifist. He offers him a pencil as a peace offering a pencil to help him build his raft. Mike does not take the pencil
?If I catch you with my son again, I'll kill you'- Mike to Locke
This interaction ticks off Walt and he airs out some personal laundry in front of some of the people at the caves
Mike takes the comic book a second time and throws it into the fire it.
The polar bear is the last thing Walt, and later Mike, looks at when the comic is taken away from him and thrown into the fire by Mike
Flashback to the hospital:
Mike is drawing a picture of a man celebrating a birthday
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=172&pos=347Mike's right leg and right arm are hurt. He was hit on his right side. Did his left arm hit the street pretty hard?
Walt is almost 2 when Mike is in hospital drawing.
?How about what's black, white, and red all over?' Joke the nurse tells Mike. A penguin with a sunburn is the answer
The nurse is a mother of 4
It had been 2 months since Sue last heard from Mike. She is still living in Amsterdam
Sue had to contact Andy to find out about Mike's accident
It will take Mike one year in physical therapy to fully recover
As Sue carts Mike out, she butters him up by telling him she is paying for all the bills. She then informs him she is getting married to Brian.
Sue and Brian are moving to Italy at the end of the month so Brian can take over the Rome offices
When she tells Mike about Brian adopting Walt, she moves off camera for a second, the camera pans out and you see white female nurse and a black male nurse/orderly walk out of a side room. The male nurse/orderly has a horizontal stripe running across his shirt. Is this a reference to the black/white theme?
?Consider what's best for Walt. You can keep holding on if you want, but ask yourself why you're doing that. Is it really for him? Or is it for you?'- Sue. Is this another ?letting go' reference?
Back to the caves:
Hurley tells Mike Walt is gone. Mike thinks he knows where he is.
Mike locates Locke and Boone. Locke is sharpening a knife
?I'm not in the mood for your games, man. Where's Walt?'- Mike to Locke
?I told him this morning that he couldn't be around me anymore, trying to respect your wishes'- Locke
With this, Mike seems genuinely concerned he doesn't know where Walt could be. Locke offers his help.
?Let's go find your boy'- Locke
Kate helps Charlie carry Claire's bags back to the caves. There are 2 bags.
?I've had my share of manly encounters'- Charlie. Referring to the fight with Sawyer.
Claire has been missing for over a week
*'Yeah. It's weird. I barely knew her, barely know her, Claire. She's been missing over a week and everyday she's gone it feels like bits of me are crumbling or something'- Charlie
As Kate leaves, Charlie goes back and forth between reading the diary or not.
Back to the jungle:
Walt is walking Vincent on a very short leash
They both hear something. Vincent barks and Walt looks around
Vincent breaks the leash and runs away from Walt. Walt runs after him calling his name
Back to Australia:
?Same argument 3rd time in a row. Barkley said it was an immigration issue'- Sue. Does this have anything to do with one of our Lostaways?
Walt is doing his homework he has that same zoned out look staring at Vincent.
Walt mentions how he might be better off studying birds of Egypt
The bird he has to study is a bronze cuckoo. If I heard it right this is an interesting bird. Article on them:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/03/0311_030312_cuckoo.html"If we put a different species of cuckoo chick in the wren's nest, one that makes completely the wrong begging call, then it was always abandoned," Kilner said. "Only Horsfield bronze-cuckoo chicks make the right sound to escape detection."
"Cuckoos con other birds into rearing their chicks because it's so much easier than doing it themselves. "As parasites, cuckoos exploit the hard work of other birds," Kilner said.
http://www.amonline.net.au/wild_kids/birds/cuckoo.htm?Shining Bronze-cuckoos do not build nests. They lay their eggs in the nests of other birds such as thornbills, wrens, flycatchers and honeyeaters. The female lays up to 16 long, pale green to brown eggs. The eggs are laid one at a time in the nests of 16 other birds. The other birds do not notice that they are sitting on a stranger's egg. When the egg hatches the chick is helpless and without feathers. The foster parents feed the chick until it has feathers and is ready to fly in two to three weeks. The foster parents continue to feed the young cuckoo for several weeks after it leaves the nest.' Nice birds
Is this in some way a reference to the Walt/Mike/Sue/Brian situation?
Sue starts to feel ill. This takes all of Brian's attention
Walt calls to Brian to pay attention to him.
?Hey, Brian, look, look. You're not looking. You're not looking'- Walt.
As he says this, his face changes and then a bird slams into the window, killing itself. The bird is brown, black, and red
Brian looks at Walt and gives him an odd look. Walt goes back to reading his bird book paying no mind to the dead bird.
Flashback:
Brian is standing outside Mike's door.
Sue died one day before Brian showed up to See Mike.
Sue had a blood disorder and was sick for about a week
Places Walt and family have gone moved to include Amsterdam, Italy, Australia
Mike has 5 locks on his door
Brian lies to Mike about Sue's wishes for Mike to take Walt
?I haven't been his father in 9 years'- Mike to Brian
Brian finally confesses he never really wanted to adopt Walt. He only did it for Sue
?Sometimes when he's around, things happen. He's different somehow'- Brian
This is the second time Walt is referred to as different. Sounds similar to Hurley and his ?curse'
Brian had shown up without Walt. Maybe Brian was afraid to fly with Walt and would rather have Walt's biological dad pick him up and take the chance.
Back to the jungle:
Mike and Locke hear Walt and start to head towards him
Flashback:
The nanny gives Mike a small wooden box containing all of the letters Mike ever sent Walt.
As he looks at this box, there is a shot of the octagon shaped design above him. There are 4 dots towards the center of 4 of the 8 parts.
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=172&pos=517.
Back to the jungle:
Locke and Mike start to rescue Walt. Walt is standing inside a ?safety' tree
Walt is continually calling for his dad
Flashback:
Mike walks in the room where Walt is with the manila envelope Brian had given him
There are globe like lamps/statues in the room where Walt is waiting. This is about as close as we get to real globes in this episode.
Walt asks where Brian is
?I'm not going anywhere with you'- Walt to Mike
Based on Walt's reaction to being picked up by Mike, Brian didn't even tell him. Was this out of fear? Fear of how Walt might react to such news?
Mike lies to Walt twice. Once about the legal reasons why Mike has ownership and secondly about Brian giving Walt Vincent.
Back to the jungle:
The polar bear is roughly the same size as the one in the comic book.
Mike and Locke cross a fallen branch trying to reach Walt. Mike slips and Locke grabs him with his right hand
Locke tosses the knife to Mike, who then drops it to Walt
Walt stabs the bear. No blood is visible
As Mike lowers himself with Locke's help, he gets Walt to safety
It looks like Mike stabs the bear in the throat. When the bear reels back, there is no blood. The bear then runs away.
Mike and Locke look at each other after the rescue. Locke gives on of his trademark smiles
At the caves, Mike gives Walt all the old cards he had sent to Walt.
Mike and Walt share a laugh about the ?dumb' penguin joke
Charlie finally gave in and is reading Claire's diary
Claire's diary has an interesting list of items she needs to get.
1. Brush, 2.Water, 3.Books, 4.C amera, 5. Gum, 6.Hat, 7. Jerky, 8. Cd's & player, 9. Banana is crossed out and replaced with the word ?candy'
At the bottom of the page are the words in big letters I HATE HIM. Is this referring to the ex that dumped her?
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=172&pos=614Charlie reads her entry about him and how he makes her feel safe. This obviously pleases Charlie
He then reads something that takes the smile off his face. He quickly heads over to Jack and Sayid
He tells them about a particular entry: ?had that weird dream again, the one with the black rock I can't get away from. I try to leave it but it won't let me.'
Clues about the black rock start to emerge
In the jungle, Locke and Boone are looking for Vincent. Locke is using his dog whistle
?You can't hear everything, Boone. The sooner you learn that, the better'- Locke to Boone
A noise is heard coming towards them. Locke draws his knife with his right hand.
Claire re-emerges from the jungle
?Claire?'- Locke
*'s indicate added parts to help answer A's questions.
