Hi Mr.Rail Guy, I like the addition you've made to the 540 day post.  I do believe that the cycles are predictable, and that is how the others knew to expect new arrivals on the island.  I wonder if the others know precisely from which direction the new arrivals might be coming?  If not,  would they scatter themselves in different locations around the island perhaps?   Could this be why they didn't attack either of flight 815's groups in full force right away?  Just speculating.

This would imply that the others have no way of communicating with one another when they are separated...except by signal fire?  Is this why Goodwin was so surprised by finding the radio?

It could also mean that the others "home base" is closer to the tail section of the plane so they were able to infiltrate and kidnap with greater numbers.

Good points, Mr Rail Guy.  I'm thinking that the others either didn't know the radios existed, or perhaps had some compelling reason not to use them.  Perhaps some or all of the others communicate telepathically?  But if this is so, why the need for the big signal black smoke fire in Exodus?  If some of the others set that fire, why would they do so and for whose benefit if they could communicate telepathically?

Good points, Mr Rail Guy. I'm thinking that the others either didn't know the radios existed, or

Unless they can only communicate telepathically when in close proximity to one another.  I would also guess that not everyone on the island has this ability.  If the Goodwin-others could communicate telepathically, why would they need a piece of paper with the descriptions of the tailies?  Couldn't Goodwin just tell them telepathically?

Maybe we need to think about why people use signal fires/smoke.  The obvious is communication - but to communicate what?  Here are some of my ideas:

1.  to let someone know of your location.

2.  to signal the beginning or ending of something (kind of like synchronizing your watches).

3.  to let someone know that you are ready

That's all I got.  I am thinking that it is likely number 2.  Now, what does the fire signal the beginning or ending of?

Hi Mr. Rail Guy, I'm not  really convinced of the other's telepathic ability either, although you never know.  We have several groups, and from what we've seen, they didn't have much in the way of telepathy.  And as for the ones we haven't seen, the whispers, they must not be very telepathic either otherwise why would they do all that whispering?  Unless the whispering is their thoughts somehow amplified and broadcast?

In addition to your questions about what the communication might be, I would like to add in why would the signal fire have to be black smoke?  For greater visibility during daylight?  To distinguish it from a random lighting strike fire that would be grey or white?  And what was burning in the fire that caused it to billow black smoke for a whole day?  And why was it burning for a whole day?

I tend to think that the whispers are the residuals from telepathic communication between some group of others.  I think that the residuals exist because something on the island is enhancing their abilities to the point that they cannot fully control them, or that something is amplifying them, as you said.

What would cause something to burn black smoke all day?  Could it be a homing beacon, of sorts?
