I know that I have been rather harsh on theories and such that are based on information gained in other websites...so I wanted to give the reasoning for my thinking. I have an idea of what I want this place to be, and how I want it to run..and if it means keeping a smaller comm, then so be it.
So this is where I am coming from:
Out of all of the viewers that watch Lost, and are avid fans...actually only a small percent of them even know that these other sites exist. Some do not even have computers at home. There are fans out there that simply watch the show, and talk about what they saw with other friends who simply watched the show. They have no spoilers, they do not go to the websites, and they do not obsess over every tiny detail.
What this means is that the show will have to be able to make sense and be figured out by those folks. I always try to keep this in mind when I form theories. I only try to use what was shown, will be shown, and what can be explained easily based on the real world that we live in...because in the end, that is the way that the show is going to have to play out, otherwise at some point, those that do not keep lists and charts and do massive research and visit multiple sites will leave.
Another thing that should be kept in mind is the fact that most of the sites out there were not started by anyone that is directly connected to the writing, directing or production of the show. They are sites that were started by the network or fans in order to give out things to keep some of the viewers busy, distracted, and watching.
You want to know the big secrets of Hanso Corp? The website is not going to give out any clues to the show, you will just have to watch it. Have you really seen anything on Oceanic that has told you what was going on? No, I have seen about 50 billion "SECRET MESSAGES!!!!!!" posts but what did they say? "I'm trapped on an island, tell my family I love them" And what about that script with the "monster" on it? And the diary over on ABC? Why would they only give out super secret clues to the show to the handful of people that know that it is even there? And how many absurd theories have you now read based on things that people spent days researching based on what they saw in one of those sites that seems to have nothing to do with the show?
As far as I know, there is one site and only one site that was set up by the actual crew of the show, and that is the Fuselage. But they give out very little hints other than the episode titles and who's FB will be in it. The point is that JJ and David have been very clear so far in the fact that the answers will make sense, and will be based on our realities in our everyday lives. Improbable, but not impossible. And will play out over a 5-8 year time frame.
As far as all of these other things go, I just see them as easter eggs for the obsessed. Fun to know, but probably not crucial to understanding the story.
So there it is, my 2 cents.
This is not meant to put anyone down...just to explain where I'm coming from.http://www.livejournal.com/community/pondering_lost/86618.html#cutid1
