The first thing that I noticed right off, of course, was the fact that the little compound they live in is very well equipped with all the modern items we would expect off the island. This was a vast contrast to the bunkers we have become accustomed to.
In addition to the modern houses and appliances, we also saw a lot of fresh and perishable foods. Some of it can be explained by farming, some of it can't. The bread in Juliet's sandwich for Jack was factory bread, not homemade (paused many times on that one). Frozen, maybe, but still rather fresh in comparison tothe institutional bulk shelf goodsdropped last season outside of the Swan station, however we still saw Dharma water bottles. Now, in the first segment, we watch as the camera pans out over the island to reveal the crash sites for the plane parts, as well as the location of the compound.
Ben (Nothenry) Tells Goodwin that if he runs, he can make it to the tail section in about an hour. Judging from what I saw, the compound was even further from the tail section than the mid section was....and it was a full day's hike from the tail section to the mid section...how did he make it so quickly?
On a side note, I still say that the plane was not "pulled" down by a huge magnet so much as had it's vital controls interrupted by it.....because we still did not see anything else drawn to it from the island. Now on to Juliet. I would like to know what she was so upset about in the start of the episode. It was not so bad that music wouldn't distract her, but she was still quite shaken up about something.
Juliet obviously hates the one guy that was at the book club....and does not seem to care a flying flip what Ben thinks of her actions....at least not at that point.....but did seem awkward and uncomfortable with him in the compound (right after the crash) which was different than how she talked to everyone else in the bookclub meeting.
The book she picked was Carrie (according to screencaps), but I think it was more awink to King than having anything to do with the plot, since it is well known that King is an avid fan of the show. When Juliet and Jack were talking, Jack realizes that they are underwater and he's in an aquarium (I think that's right) he asks if it's another one of Dharma's stations, and Juliet responds that "they called it the Hydra", she also neither confirms, nor denies Jack's statement that this group is what was left over from the Dharma group. These really stood out for me. She not only refers to the dharma folks in the past tense, but as a third party that she was not in. I got the feeling that these others may not have anything to do with Dharma at all. This would explain why all of the animals were set free......it was not their project. Given the dates we have for the films, and the apparent ages of the others..it would seem that these are more likely the children of the Dharma folks, not the Dharma folks themselves....but there were a few older ones there....maybe they just stayed because they knew no other way of life? We have now seen Swan , Staff, Pearl, and Hydra stations, and know of the shallow one by the huts, and the map shows one called Flame. Going by the map on the Swan bunker door, we can assume that Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are now being held close by the camp.......and the huts were close by the camp.......yet we now know that their actual homes are very far away, on another part of the island. Ok, so they go out of their way to give Kate nice things to remember before her trials of the next two unpleasant weeks.......so, since they afforded the boys no such comforts, are we to assume that they do not care if the boys have it rough, or that the boys will not have such an unpleasant two weeks?
Given the fact that her wrists are raw and she's hungry enough to eat fish biscuits...we have to assume that much time had passed between seeing her at the table on the beach, and seeing her taken to the cage near Sawyer, but will we ever know what went on in that time? This brings me to the other thing that has really stood out for me:
Why keep Sawyer in a cage outside with no contact, Kate all prettied up before receiving the brunt of some intense yet unpleasant contact, before putting her in another outdoor cage, but keep Jack underwater in an aquarium?
Is this meant to be part of the breaking them down? Do they know enough of each one to know which torture to use? It should be noted that we also have no idea how much time passed from seeing them being hooded on the pier, and seeing them wake (I could go into spoilers here, but I won't since they may not be what they seem when you think of the parallel times that started the first 3 episodes last year) I am still not sure that the file that Juliet had in front of her was what she said it was. Of course she must have been bluffing about Jack's ex being happy, she can't know that....but I'm wondering if the rest of the info wasn't at least partially gathered while he was drugged.I got this feeling when after she came out of the room, Ben tells her that she did a good job. Good job lying? Good job gaining his trust? Good job getting him to submit? On another side note:
Both times, Kate asks for Sawyer then Jack
Jack yells for Kate then Sawyer, then just asks about his "friends"
I never heard Sawyer ask about/yell for either Kate or Jack.http://community.livejournal.com/pondering_lost/104664.html?mode=reply&style=mine
