On occasion, characters end up "sharing" a flashback, where we see more than one POV for the same scene, usually in different episodes. Are these flashbacks consistent? I think not. In fact, I think (but have yet to verify) that every FB with more than one POV will have inconsistencies.
Airplane Interior
- Pilot 1, Jack's FB: the stewardess says "The Pilot has put on the fasten seat belt sign."
- Pilot 2, Charlie's: "The Captain has turned on the fasten seat belt sign."
- Pilot 2, Kate's FB: "The Captain has switched on the fasten seat belt sign."
-> Either the producers are sloppy, or the memories of the flashbacks are fallible. Considering their attention to detail, I suggest the latter.
Airport Terminal
- White Rabbit & HOTRS: The position of the ticket counter where Jack makes his case changes its position relative to the escalators. To do: examine dialogue.
Boy Sawyer's Bedroom
- Sawyer dreams and has a FB, remembering his father's suicide. The FB repeats, but the father turns into a boar. Suggests that dreams and memories are intertwined, perhaps interchangeable. In same episode, Claire says her dreams are her memories. Dream FBs may be less reliable than memory FBs.
Jin and Sun's Bathroom Mirror
- HOTRS, Sun's FB: Sun gets off couch, asks if Jin is alright before the bathroom door closes, she asks six questions in the bathroom before he responds. FB ends when she leaves.
- In Tranlsation, Jin: Bathroom door closes without Sun's question, she only asks four questions before he responds, after she leaves he cries in the mirror.
-> these demonstrate a strictly limited POV. Jin wouldn't know Sun was on couch, Sun wouldn't know Jin cried. Either Jin didn't hear all her questions, or he doesn't remember them, or Sun remembers being more responsive than she actually was. Regardless, the limited POV of the flashbacks suggests that they have some degree of unreliability.
Hurley's Lotto Ticket
- in two of his flashbacks, we see the lotto ticket, but it's different in each one, again suggesting the fallibility of flashbacks. Hurley's memories may be changing.
To examine:
- Ana Lucia shoots Shannon
- Eko's village days
- Exodus 2 airport scenes
- Juliet and Ben see 815 go down
- hospital scenes where Jack saves Sarah and Shannon's dad dies
