So I'm sitting here browsing some Lost sites and have the first season soundtrack playing as some lovely background noise. And I realize that I really miss the music of Lost. Sure we've had some lovely tunes this season (Downtown, Shambala, etc) but I hadn't realized how much I miss the other music...the orchestra stuff. I miss the emotion of Season One, and now I miss the music. And I suppose the two almost go hand in hand.It was cool how certain tunes were sort of 'themes' for some characters. Like, one song the I love was Locke's 'theme' and if I'm not mistaken it was played more than once in relation to him. Know what I mean? I don't think it was played in his latest episode (Man From Tallahassee). That would have been kinda cool, to have 'his' song back again. And Jack's music, the tune from when Boone died....omg.... *grabs tissues*But I think nothing can compare to the scene when the raft launched in the Season One finale. *sniffle* Even when I just listen to that piece on the soundtrack I can easily find myself getting misty eyed....seeing in my mind how Vincent swims after them, how Sun waves goodbye to Jin....*blurg*When I think of the second and third seasons, nothing even comes to mind?!

actually, i thought the song from when the raft took off was the same song they played when Claire came out  to the beach with Aaron for the first time and the same song that played when Charlie died....I know there were other times, because Hubby (who doesn't really watch the show) will always turn from the computer when he hears it and say "what sad thing is happening now? I hear The Sad Song."

The music when Claire returned with newborn Aaron was still Boone's death music.  And they brought that one back in a slightly different version when Charlie died.  That was sorta my biggest clue that "this is it..." when I heard *that* song.

They played the raft departure song again in this season's finale, and they played it in that 'Answers' show.  They are both sad songs but they are very different songs too.

They've probably used the 'old' songs scattered throughout the seasons but they just don't stand out......at least to me......like they did in the first season.

I ordered the second season soundtrack last night.  I didn't even know there WAS a second season soundtrack!  I've had the first since it came out, but never bothered to look for a second...or third.  Someone on Amazon described in their review, just when each piece was used in the show and noted which songs are variations of ones from the first season.  I can't wait to get this!  Wheee!

(And hello, Kwich.  Long time, no see.  Did you get all moved like you mentioned waaaay back?)

no, we did not get moved, that fell through so we decided to wait it out here till something better came along. As it stands we have decided that come Hell or high water, we are moving next spring! We hate it here.

Did anyone notice that the music they used on the trek to the transmission tower was the same music we heard in Pilot 2, when Sayid and his group trek up the mountain to ultimately hear for the first time Danielle's transmission? I really liked that note.

Yep, Jane.  That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about, and liking, and missing.  lol  Seems I noticed alot of the 'old music' in this finale when I hadn't really noticed anything that stood out for a long time before.

And then they follow up the trek with hearing Danielle's message again at the transmission tower....

Has anyone heard of the translations to the most recently heard transmission? Is it exactly the same as before, or has it changed? And does the math of the "iterations" add up?

We need Sayid to do the math in his head - it's way too complicated for me...  Time Loopers huh - that's a good name for them - just call them loopers or loopy for short - as in "are you a loopy?"

I thought about the iterations too....lol  But like Brax, that math is way too complicated for me.

Nice to see some action at this board.  Well besides Brax and I replying to each other.  And ya know, I wanted to post something in the 'Other Questions' section but it's a read-only area.  I was going to post "Ooooh Other questions....ya mean like, how tall is Ben?  What brand eyeliner does Richard wear?"   Good thing it's read-only, I guess!

Yeah, this place has been pretty quiet for quite some time now. I wonder what kind of trouble we can get into here left to our own devices?

Omigod, debs. Music! Leitmotifs!

From the Wiki:

Carl Maria von Weber was the first composer to make extensive use of leitmotifs. Indeed, the first use of the word "leitmotif" in print was by the critic F. W. J?hns whilst describing Weber's work, although this was not until 1871...

It is Richard Wagner, however, who is the composer most often associated with leitmotifs, and his operas make liberal use of them. His cycle of four operas, Der Ring des Nibelungen, uses dozens of leitmotifs, representing characters, things, or situations; while some of these leitmotifs occur in only one of the operas, many occur throughout the entire cycle. Wagner used the word "Grundthema" (basic idea) when speaking about his leitmotifs, although the first use of the term with reference to Wagner's music was in 1887 by H. von Wolzogen, the editor of the Bayreuther Bl?tter, in discussing G?tterd?mmerung...

One of the pieces in the Ring Cycle, I believe it's in the 2nd act, is called "Forest Murmurs." It indicates that the character Siegfried can now hear the sounds of the forest with some understanding.

Now, hold on to your tinfoil hats...

In "Solitary", Sayid hangs from a tree by his right leg, while his left leg is pierced by a sharp branch. This evokes the myth of Odin hanging from Yggdrasil from one leg, with his other pierced by his own spear (which has all kinds of writing on it, not unlike Eko's stick!) Yggdrasil is a "world tree" of mythological importance. Danielle's bunker is dugout in a banyan grove, it even has a banyan tree running through it, and the banyan tree is also a "world tree" of mythological importance. Danielle has a Music Box, suggesting we pay attention to the music. After Sayid escapes from Danielle, he limps through the woods... and hears whispers. Murmurs in the Forest. Of course, the "god" of the Ring Cycle is "Wotan" - another name for Odin.

In a very indirect and roundabout way, we've been "told" to pay attention to the leitmotifs.

So, what scenes in which episodes highlight the tunes for each character?

Are you willing to do some research, debs? I would love to have a list pointing me to particular scenes to listen to.

I can try, but if it's something you're urgently looking forward to......well......I can try.  My problem will be that I'll get so sucked into the episodes that I'll forget to note the music.  LOL

What would you want to know?  What is happening in the scenes?  Or just the ep/scene so you can study yourself?

I'm just hoping to get some short references to particular scenes in certain episodes that clearly exemplify identifiable leitmotifs.

For example, the scene in Solitary where Sayid opens Danielle's music box (and which marks Danielle opening up to Sayid) has a particular tune which I think is Danielle's leitmotif.

Or, the scene in Pilot 2 where Sayid's small group hikes up the mountain has the "hiking to the transmission" leitmotif which is repeated in Looking Glass, where Jack's large group hikes to the transmission tower.

So, if there's a particular scene that highlights Kate's leitmotif, or Locke's, etc., I'd love to know where to find them! And preferably from seasons 1 & 2, since I have the DVDs. (I guess I should order the soundtracks from Amazon while I'm at it.)

Anyways, whatever help or direction you can provide would be so ever much welcome!

I just got the second season soundtrack last week.  Whee!  It's not as good (to me) as the first season, but still lovely to listen to as I putter around here on the computer.

Anyone know when the third season soundtrack comes out?  I didn't see it when I ordered #2 from Amazon.

I have the season 1 & 2 DVDs too.  I hate having to wait till December for season 3!

Hey Debs,

I've been listening to the soundtracks all week. Well, the Season 1 soundtrack. Like you said, the second season just isn't as good. It's so... I don't know, full of tension and anxiety, which fits with the season as a whole but doesn't make for good driving music. The first season music was so much more melodious, so much more nuanced and heartfelt.

*sigh*

Seven more months to go.

Hehe...yep, even since I've gotten the second season cd I find I don't listen to it much.  I can let the whole first season cd play but I tend to skip thru tracks on the second one.

I haven't done diddly about the music-scenes project.  I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and right now all my attention is on that.  WOOT!!!

Yay Harry Potter! Woo!!

I got the Deathly Hallows Saturday afternoon. It came in its own Harry Potter box, with a strict warning to us Muggles - don't open until July 21st! It being the 21st, I opened the box immediately, and 40 hours later I'd read all 759 glorious pages. Whew! It's funny, Sunday night I was getting ready for bed, and I was hoping I'd wake up early so I could get some more reading in for work. Like casting a spell imperfectly, work called at 2am - much too early, but still... reading Harry Potter at 4 in the morning was something else.

On another note, I saw Ratatouille a couple weeks ago, and I can't remember the scene, but I remember clearly thinking, "Wow, that sure sounds an awful lot like some of the good music we've heard on Lost." Sure enough, Michael Giacchino scored the movie!
