Now, I warn you, they are esoteric!
Lost Questions Pilot, pt. 1
- The show begins with Jack's opening eye. What does the symbolism of the inner eye bring to this action? Does the mythology of Horus or the Chakras carry a responsibility for the characters?
- The context of the Hero is apparent from the moment that Jack enters the beach and moves past the fleeing survivors toward the crash. Discuss the hero and the crossing of the threshold.
- Using Jung's archetypes, discuss Boone's Failed Hero, Jack's super-ego, and Hurley's id. What ALWAYS happens to the Failed Hero? And how will this influence the unfolding story?
- Discuss how Locke's ideals of the intemperate mind and Jung's ideas of the "collective unconscious" are similar.
- Using J.R.R. Tolkien's 1938 essay "On Fairy-Stories", discuss how Claire's pregnancy is a portent for the island's future.
- Jack admits that he took courses to get his pilot's license, but found "it wasn't for me". What does that tell you about Jack's interests and limitations?
-The pilot impulsively sticks his head out of the window, and dies. What does this say about the flaws in his character? And how does this reinforce the survival skills of the surviving three? Why would Jack, who has seen what the monster is capable of, turn back for Charlie? Why does Charlie not only accept the help, but then flee rather than helping or waiting for his savior?
- Find Fiji. Turn south or north by 1, 000 miles and draw an arc to the right of the island. What considerations would have to made to this area for the current information to fit?
- Kate turns back for Jack, where Charlie hesitates. What does this say about her true nature?
- Discuss the cathexis of Jack and Kate's relationship. Use examples from the scene of their first meeting, their scene on the shore that night, the interplay between them in the cockpit (Jack is demonstratively concerned with Kate's well-being, but not Charlie's or the Pilot's), and the silent appraisals in the final scene. What is the subtext of the relationship?
