Is a metaphor.  There isn't really a magic box that provides your heart's desire.  Ben did not mean magic as in Harry Houdini magic - it was more as in if you want something "we" (the others) can make it happen.  Ben knows how to feed the mystical aspects of Locke's "connection" with the island.  And, Alex made sure to bring up the point that Ben lies and manipulates people - it's what he does.  Ben obviously knew what Cooper had done to Locke, and that Cooper being controlled (bound and gagged) would please Locke (be his heart's desire) - Ben never did ask Locke to articulate what he would want, and I'm not sure that if Locke had even thought about it, he would have chosen what he got, but having received it, it makes perfect sense to Locke.  The real question then becomes - how could Cooper be on the island - I don't subscribe to smokey manifestation theories, so he must physically be there.  So, how and when did he get there.  If he was there before the Purple Sky, then why - was it part of a plan for John Locke in the future.  If they can't communicate or get off the island, then they couldn't have sent for Cooper at the time that Locke showed up in Ben's abode.  They must have had "the man from Tallahase" stashed or available already.  But why?

Yes!  This was one of the things I touched on in my own ponders.  If Ben was correct and whoever leaves can't get back, then Cooper had to have been there before The Swan imploded.  Why?

If that is just another Ben lie and people *can* come and go, at what point did they know it would be handy to have Cooper there?  We know they've been watching our Losties, so what happened that they decided it was time to nab Evil Daddy?  If that's what they did....

I've seen theories here and there for a long time that Cooper is the real Frank Sawyer.  Until now I'd always thought "yeah right, whatever."  I felt that way about Christian being Claire's father too, but, well, there ya go.  So knowing that, and after seeing this episode, I can easily see Cooper being Frank Sawyer.  Not saying I like it or not, but saying I can see it now.

I think the reason that people can't get back is because of the beacon not working since the implosion.  I think that they would be able to leave by boat it's just not good to leave home knowing you can never come back if you really want "or need" to.  As far as Cooper being Sawyer - that really seemed like one of the only predicatable connections that we have seen.  To me, that seemed more likely than Jack and Claire being half-siblings.  Good thing he didn't hook up with her.  Imagine the outcry would far outweigh the outcry when two unrelated siblings hooked up.  So, if Ben was really coming to get Locke when Danielle caught him - that would explain Cooper being there (if they really did want to coerce Locke into joining up, that would help).  Ben really did seem interested in how Locke was able to walk, and his connection with the island.  Remember the list that Michael was working on didn't include Locke, but it wasn't Ben's list - it was Ms. Klugh's list.

Hmm.   My hubby felt the same, that they probably went shopping for Daddy Evil around the time Ben came looking for Locke at the Swan Station.  That whole chapter is becoming more interesting to me now.
