Early on (Pilot episode), Jack dove into bushes to get away from Smokey. Danielle led them to a Banyan tree to escape Smokey when they were on the way to the Black Rock. Eko had his "Jesus Stick" with him on his first encounter with Smokey. During Eko's walk to try to find his brother, Eko pulled another branch to use as a crutchand thenhe encountered Smokey again - and Smokey ran away. At the end when he went chasing after the image of his brother he didn't have his stick to protect himself, and Smokey beat the crap out of him. Hence my statement that Smokey doesn't like wood. To protect yourself build a wooden house (especially out of Banyan trees) and Smokey will leave you alone.-Brax
