What if moving the island really means just changing the position of the "hole" in the shield - i.e., you have to use a different bearing to approach the island or leave it than the current one. We already know that if you don't use the right bearing, you can't see or get to the island and if you don't use the right one leaving (like Desmond when he was sailing), you can't leave (you sail around in circles)... So, you don't physically move a hunk of land, just the ability to find it...
