According to Hurley inEverybody Hates Hugo, there was enough food for 1 person eating 3 meals a day for 3 months. According to the blast door diagram, there is a food drop every 6-8 months. The fact that there was such a small amount of food in the pantryimplies that Desmond didn't know about the food drops. The food drops supply 2 people for 6-8 months and since Desmond has been alone for 3 years, there should have been5 or 6 times as much food left over (i.e. - at least5 drops with him eating half as much food). Considering that Kelvin was alone when he found Desmond, it is unclear how much food was stockpiled from leftover rations resulting from him being by himself. (i.e. he could have more than 3 or 4 times enough for 2 people and then he died) It's easily possible that the food drop was just the normal 6-8 month drop for 2 people. Also consider that if Desmond didn't know about the drops, he would have been rationing his supply - he wouldn't be eating 3 meals a day. He seemed way to frightened to go outside for that to be suspended to go out and get food.

A couple comments...and a question.

I see on the blast-door-map where it refers to the 6-8 months ("P.RD.: every 6-8 months") but how did it come to be known that this is the food drop?  (Sorry, all things hatch/Dharma related I tend to leave to the...ahem...experts.

You mention Desmond was alone for three years.  We don't actually know how long he was alone, do we?  He said he crashed three years ago and Kelvin found him, and they "saved the world together for a while," but we don't know when Kelvin died.

Although Desmond did tell Jack he didn't "get out much," he knew the door well enough to tell Kate it sticks and to keep trying, so we know he did venture out now and then.

Something not mentioned in your post, but something I'm curious about....I don't know if we have an accurate guess on how long the blast doors stayed down, but to draw all that map and scribbles wouldn't the doors have to be down quite a while?  Or one would have to know just what they were going to write when the doors did come down?  And why the black light?

Deb, you are absolutely correct.

I actually meant to amend my statement above (because I had rewatched the epi that showed Desmond telling Kate that the door stuck).... but my internet connection was down for 3 days.... - so, you beat me to it...

You are also correct in that we don't know that P.RD. stands for Periodic Resupply Drop - it could stand for Popsicle Ration Disappears every 6-8 months.

You are also correct that we don't know how long Desmond has been alone.

But, I still think that there was too much food left in the pantry for there not to be a periodic resupply and that the amount of food does not mean that the resupply had anything to do with them being observed as needing more food.  If that was the case, there would have been much more food in the "drop" - for 42 people vice 2.

Popsicle Ration Disappears every 6-8 months.

Things are worse than we ever imagined if the popsicles run out.  Especially the orange ones!!  I bet The Others supply is running low and that's why they're so protective.  They probably have creamsicles.....bastards.

Yeah, I agree the drop was scheduled or routine and not from observation.
