ABC Message Boards

What are ABC's Message Board Rules and Guidelines?

Whether this is your first time online or you're a seasoned online user, we've spelled out our house rules for you here. Generally speaking, these rules simply require respect and good manners. Use common sense and you'll feel right at home.

OUR SPECIFIC HOUSE RULES ARE:

  1. We live by words online, so we don't allow obscene, racist or sexually explicit language. We also reserve the right to remove postings that defame or insult anyone, and notes that are abusive or hateful. Any harassing notes or postings that might be construed as stalking will be deleted and made available to the proper law enforcement officials. We also reserve the right to remove notes that are off the subject or not in English.
  2. No solicitations or advertisements are allowed. This includes advertisements for your business or latest get-rich-quick scheme. Such notes add clutter and devalue conversation.
  3. You may not suggest or encourage illegal activity. ABC.com will assist law enforcement officials.
  4. You must have copyright ownership of all material that you post on our bulletin boards and in our chats. No articles, recipes, song lyrics, art or graphics may be posted without the express written consent of the copyright holder.
  5. You must respect the privacy of individuals. This means no posting of phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers or any other private information.
  6. Good manners online means that you don't post the same note more than once. The online word for posting many times on one topic is "spamming." We don't allow that.
  7. You participate at your own risk on the bulletin boards, in chat and in e-mail. You take responsibility for postings under your identification and use the information provided here at your own risk. ABC.com takes no responsibility for the content or opinions posted here.
  8. ABC.com reserves the right to remove any postings (although it has no duty to do so).
  9. By posting to any portion of ABC.com, you agree to abide by ABC.com's Terms of Use.
  10. Use your common sense and have a wonderful time at ABC.com.

Why do the boards look different?

ABC.com is upgrading its message boards this summer. The new message boards are the first step in the upgrade process.

Where are my old posts?

Your archived posts and all the archived boards can be viewed here.

How long will my old posts be available?

Your posts on the archived boards will be available until June 30, 2007.

I can't view the boards/post new messages/login to my account.

Send technical problems here and include as much detail as you can about the issue.

There's a feature I'd love the new boards to provide.

Let ABC.com know! Send your suggestions here.

  ANSWERS

1. What happened to the message boards?

We've upgraded the software that runs our message boards. You'll notice some changes in the way the boards work-they'll run faster and more smoothly as a result of the upgrade. As part of this process, we moved your old messages into the database used by our new board software.

1. Why do I need to sign in?

You do not need to sign in to read messages, but in order to post messages, you will need to be a registered member of the GO Network. Registration is free, and is transferable to all GO Network sites.

If you have already registered with the GO Network directly or through one of the network sites, enter your username and login information on the sign in page. If you have not registered before, follow the instructions to create a new account. Refer to our privacy policy for a description on how information you provide for these accounts will be used.

2. What are threads?

Message threads are basically "conversations" that take place based on linkages between messages. Once a message is replied to, both the original message, the reply and all subsequent replies become part of the same thread. To view forum messages as threads, select the "Thread" message view by clicking "Threaded View". (Note that this option is not available if you are already in Threaded View. In this case, Threaded View will be replaced by Flat View.)

3. How do I create bold and italic text within my messages?

Message Boards allow a limited number of html tags to help you format and customize your messages. You can use the following tags: Bold, Italic, and Underline.

4. Why are asterisks replacing the text I type?

The Message Boards use a language filter to discourage profanity in Message Board discussions. Usually it will only filter out words that are commonly understood to be offensive. Occasionally the filter misinterprets inoffensive words as offensive. If you see a post that is offensive, please report it to us.

5. Where can I ask questions or make comments about Message Boards?

If you would like to ask questions, make comments, or report problems with the Message Boards, please mail us. We welcome your input and encourage you to provide suggestions on how the Message Boards can better serve your needs and interests.
